Godfather 2 opens first run at WEIS. never could understand PARAMOUNT booking fine movies in such small theatres/SCREENS.It had along run mainly because of the small amount of seats in each of the two theatres.
Thank You for not making me feel like some oddball,my ex-wife could never figure out what i saw walking in Old Drive-ins, sliding though an old busted exit door in some old busted downtown to look inside.
Honestly, I thought I was the only person in the world that cared about old theatres. CINEMA TREASURES has proved me wrong.Boy, Have you. Happy 2010.
THE Skyway Drive-in parked 566 cars in Erie making it the largest Drive in in the late 50’s. It was owned by Co-Op.They owned several Drive ins in that state.
I found a 100 Rifles one sheet with a scene of JIM BROWN and Raquel Welch in a romantic hug! The manager at the time covered it up with a white sheet of paper. I have the poster AND kept the paper covering the questionable scene for that time.
No I never had a Bud at the Miller, but we did have a MILLER Lite one night after getting a ballet out of that theatre after the local ARTS group was using it. It was the only time i ever did a downtown theatre marquee was during the ballet. I should have insisted on doing one at theIMPERIAL,but never thought about it. Everyone hated doing the Marquee. I LOVED IT!
Even when I was an ASSISTANT MGR, No one did the marquee but ME. I know it made a bunch of ushers happy.
I would never do it cause, well it would be wrong, but I think it has crossed anyone in a check out office if they are honest with themselves.Today, I don’t think the cops would follow us to the bank. In those days the county had a population of 30.000 people today its well over100.00 folks and i don’t see them doing it.
I was really surprized how well Richard Pryor did here in Martinez,Georgia.TO be honest We might have played Silver Streak second run with Pryor, but he doesn’t show up until well into the movie. I guess some of the folks from downtown drove up. It would have kicked butt Downtown.
Tisloews. Are Loews Melrose, and Madison downtown theatres? I find it hard to believe they were booking G rated movies in a downtown theatre. I can’t remember one G rated movie ever playing at either the MILLER or Imperial theatres in downtown Augusta, while I worked there in the mid 70’s.Just was no market for kid movies. Your two theatres must have been out like National Hills.
CHUCK 1231, I know how big ATlanta was even in the mid 70’s probably both cities were close in population, But, I have never seen so many Drive ins in one medium size city. Thanks, for the info. My step sister is from Hamilton, Ohio and said growing up THE JOLLY ROGER was the most popular.
She said only one Drive-in remains in Cincinnati area.
Thank goodness I did get a shot of the Blue box office minus the Marquee.I found the picture the other day. I remember asking someone that lived across from the TAZEWELL DRIVE IN and the fellow said the drive in always seemed to do good business,Why it closed was anyone’s guess.
August 9 1974 NOW SHOWING THE RULING CLASS a 1972 feature with Peter O'Toole and second feature is THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN with Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr. They ran an additional Late show for 1.25 a seat with CHAPTER NINE CAPTAIN MARVEL.
Looking at this old newspaper I can’t believe ALL THE DRIVE IN THEATRES here.SO far haven’t found a single one on CT.
THE JOLLY ROGER DRIVE IN had a huge Ad.
Something called MONKEY HUSTLE is gracing that beautiful Screen. Rated PG. Clint is across the street at the IMPERIAL with THE ENFORCER kicking butt.MONKEY HUSTLE ratedPG.
So much for Black Films playing here,RICHARD PRYOR LIVE a comedy concert film does quite well with a mix audience,Something you would not see at the IMPERIAL.Playes in COLUMBIA 2.
One of the lowest Grossing pictures is playing most likely Third run in a new theatre,Yes, CAR WASH plays for one week in COLUMBIA 2.Why, this is booked in a county 90% white makes no sense. Play it in South Augusta, but not here.
Here is a booking in 1976 that could only be at a DRIVE In! First feature is BUGS BUNNY SUPERSTAR rated G and the second feature is MONTY PYTHON and the HOLY GRAIL. GO figure.
Holiday 1976 movies at MASTERS 4 include One of my favorites SILVER STREAK,THE SEVEN PER CENT SOLUTION, THE SHAGGY D.A. and THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN.
Icouldn’t find the Jolly Roger on CT.

Ijust always thought of the LOEWS in Atlanta:that all LOEWS theatres were big downtown theatres.
