Well, The big 1976 christmas picture didn’t last long. The GREAT ADVENTURE is gone and what do the guys in booking office put in? avery lousy ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH which is trashy and this Rated R flick has made the Drive in rounds having come out in 1975!
Mr.Tinney is trying to sell it on DAVID JANSSEN star of TV’s HARRY O! Hey, Isn’t KIRK DOUGLAS in this a MOVIE STAR. Well, I don’t think KIRK could save this re-re-re-LEASE!
You know,I know it has happened before,In fact, think in ATLANTA,A manager witheld all the receipts for an entire WEEKEND at a mulitplex and Hit the road! I am pretty sure he was caught, But Often we would put thousands ,AND MEAN THOUSANDS of dollars in the bank over the weekend, and it acrossed my mind that someone could hold all the monies on a busy weekend and get lost.
With three screens and admission well over $4.00 a seat in the early 80’s,not to mention the midnight shows GCC demanded we play you are talking quite a bit of change. I ADMIT FREELY i would damage a drink cup when i did not have one handy ,or a popcorn cup for a friend. AND YES all of you in the business did it too!
It is U.S. 29 Diane Drive-in. I’ve always left the U.S. off. Also there is a street that runs by the old drive-in called Diane Drive-in road.Several years ago while exploring we noticed the sign on a back road behind the Drive-in. Road was a county road so i guess the name hasn’t changed. It was a short little by-pass.
I wish you could have seen the concession stand,it had a real wood burning fireplace made out of stone ibet from the North Carolina Mtns.
Do you even remember GUS i am sure you being a downtown theatre you did not get much Disney product in those years,.I really don’t think GUS was ever on video. ED Ashner {LouGrant} starred.
I might add The lady that runs it was real nice. I had a projectionist with me one night and he had ran that same equipment years ago and he made an adjustment on the projector,
She was a very trusting lady to let Charlie work on a minor adjustment. I told her she should print T SHIRTS and i think she said she did at one time. She Also said they had a web site.
When I get to Charlotte it is doing GREAT business in the Summer.Part of the screen was blown over by HURRICANE HUGO and was replaced using the siding on the fence.
If you get there late it is packed. There is another Drive in inKINGS MOUNTAIN,N.C. I guess it opens in the summer. The Belmont is operated by a local family. The only bad thing is last i was there and i am from Augusta is the Concession and rest rooms need some serious work.
They should be making enough to put back in the Drive in. Maybe they have fixed it,its been 3 years since i was last there.
They Took the MAGNUM FORCE one sheet double exposed it where Clint was BACK TO BACK on the poster,Why I did not save it I don’t know,I did have the originals on both,so guessed I didn’t need the re-released,but should have got it.
I also got the life size Ad poster standee of CLINT from THE ENFORCER and for the life of me can’t figured what happened to it.
While i am on stinkers at NATIONAL HILLS and I know every fancy theatre got a few bombs, here is one that played one week with many nights no one on the last show. Summer of 75. we had DOC SAVAGE with Ron Ely{Tarzan on TV].RatedPG we couldn’t even get the kid business.
I see it advertised onTURNER CLASSIC movies. They never sat in an empty theatre in Augusta.
Nov. 22 1977 Now Playing THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT with second feature ALEX AND THE GYPSY both rated R,Bet Chuck Dray, The projectionist, loved those two.
If you stay in business long enough you might get a movie made in the 1950’s. That is what happened to Daniel Village once it was Twinned it got DARBY O'GILL and THE LITTLE PEOPLE with Sean Connery way before 007.
NO protests in AUGUSTA,GEORGIA were i worked the film.THE Marquee said THE LEGEND OF BLACK CHARLIE even though i said i t should be what was one the one sheets out side,We did not change them like they did on 100 RIFLES with Jim Brown and Raquel Welch, when it played at the MILLER across the street.
In 1975 times were bad at the GRAND as well other downtown theatres playing at the GRAND… THE HOUSE OF SKULL MOUNTAIN rated PG shows at 1 2;40, 4:25, 6:15,8:00 and 9:45. My how the mighty have fallen.
Tisloews,if you go to the PALACE theatre in Athens i have reprinted some old City manager letters to other managers.Found the letters in the MILLER theatre filing cabnets years ago.
Yeah, At GCC in the mall we were constanly making drops.Seems like a smart crook could have figured that out walking to the bank in the mall, often with thousands of dollars underour B.O. stained jackets.
WE did not have a policy at PLITT ABC .Make one deposit at night. Sometimes I could get the cops to follw me to the bank when i was at COLUMBIA 1 and 2.
One night JIM and TOM were making a deposit at the Bank near the IMPERIAL and they were robbed at gunpoint. Tom had two deposit bags and with smart thinking gave the crook one bag .Lesser money,Tom told the cops.JIm said he wasn’t scared, but just mad that someone robbed them. The next week Mr.Tinney gets robbed by the same Crook from what they think.
I tried to get Jim or Tom to put the whole story of the robbery on CT,but no such luck. They have all disappointed me to have loved the business as much as you and I and i cannot get any of them to get on CT.
Yeah,I had an adding machine with paper shooting out of it.Karen was probably right, all my theatre buddies at Plitt had single Screens while i had a twin. By, 10:00 at the latest for Plitt I was ready to plan my night out while Tom and Charles were finished were done with paperwork at IMPERIAL AND National Hills.
I was always in a hurry, but I could do a BOR. Heck, I did PAYROLL for our theatre everyweek. No, WE never reused paper,LOEWS must have been as cheap as GEORGIA THEATRES.
Probably, one of DISNEY’S worst movies ever to be shown “GUS” about a mule that kicks field goals, and not it was not for the OAKLAND RAIDERS ,a team called the ATOMS, the production on this film was a joke and it quickly died. Disney’s policy with Drive ins kept it from closing any Augusta Drive in sooner. This had to be a bad time for Disney.

BElieve it or not, I have an ad from this theatre, but i can’t find the lousy Anchorage newspaper!

PATSY,Nearby is the Diane 29 Drive in in the same county. It is on CT and there is a strange sad story about that Drive in you might want to read.
I might add The lady that runs it was real nice. I had a projectionist with me one night and he had ran that same equipment years ago and he made an adjustment on the projector,

The RIALTO was facing the same booking downtown theatres everywhere were facing. NOW SHOWING A BIG DOUBLE FEATURE
FOXY BROWN and TRUCK TURNER. Both rated R. need to write more?

In 1950 it parked 500 cars and as stated above by 1975 it was still 500 cars. In 1956 it was owned by the DIXIE DRIVE-IN THEATRES.

Dan, Standard fare for GCC midnight shows,I had to pull teeth to get them to book 2001 at REGENCY 1.2.3. Cinemas.
ONE reason 2001 lost out on MAKE UP with the Oscars is the ACADEMY members thought it was real apes. True Story.
