actually the 90’s are now considered the old days, just think of how nostalgic people will be for the late 2000’s, all of the bland homogenized mini-malls, megaplex’s and shallow cold corporate chains.
Mike L:
Mark Evanier has a feature on his blog (newsfromme.com) dedicated to old Los Angeles area restaurants and he mentions Scots and Lone Rangers:
“SCOT’S — Scot’s was a small chain of McDonald’s knock-offs and we used to go to the one located on the Southwest corner of Pico Boulevard and Westwood â€" land that now contains a Barnes & Noble. Their mascot was a sexy lady wearing kilts and doing a dance and they had a huge drawing of her towering over the main building. One suspects the lady and the chain’s name was because someone thought, “Hmm…maybe people go to McDonald’s because they think it’s Scottish.” Or perhaps the thought process was that people weren’t that familiar yet with McDonald’s â€" this was before that company’s big advertising blitz â€" and that they’d go to Scot’s, thinking it was the place they had in mind. Either way, there was nothing else at Scot’s that had anything to do with Scotland.
The menu was pretty much what McDonald’s then had plus a few extra items such as pizza. When they finally closed down, the structure at Pico and Westwood went through a year or three of name changes. For a while, it was Pride’s, then something else, then something else. They finally cleared the land and built a new fast food place which I’ll tell you about in the next entry."

The feature is several pages long and worth a couple of looks if you’re interested in old Los Angeles (which I guess now means the 1980s…)
There was a burger joint on the corner of Pico and Westwood, where the bank used to be, called the Lone Ranger burgers. They had tiny dollar-sized burgers and all-you-can-drink sodas, which probably accounted for my first cavities as a teen….
According to Wikipedia, he dropped out of high school(it doesn’t say what high school though), and he would’ve graduated around ‘71, so my friend was a little off on the year, if he did go to Uni. My mom worked Danny Elfman’s grandmother at Kaiser Hospital in West LA in the 80’s. The man is very, very talented.
A friend of mine, who graduated from Uni in ‘75, told me he graduated from Uni the year before him, but I’m curious. I’ll try to check it on Wikipedia. They have a lot of that kind of info there.
Really? I did not know he went to Uni. I do know he came from the neighborhood where I lived until 16, Baldwin Hills. I read he discovered movies at the Baldwin theater like I did although I think he is a few years older than I am. Although I have never met Danny we have several mutual contacts.
Wildcats. PC-BS.
Hey Tony R, I think you may have graduated in the same class as Danny Elfman from Oingo Boing. If I’m not mistaken, he also graduated from Uni in ‘74. Uni was a great school back then. Now they’re the Wildcats, instead of the Warriors.
There was also a Japanese restaurant on the SW corner – OSO. There were not many Japanese restaurants on the west side in those days. I knew the daughter of the owner.
BTW – I graduated Uni in 74.
I have a question for all of you. JoelB, William, LisaN, or D. Packard, maybe you remember, because I can’t, but besides the bank on the corner, and(in the early to mid 80’s), the Captain Video Arcade, was there, or wasn’t there also a fast food place, or a burger joint on the southwest corner of Pico and Westwood in the 70’s and 80’s? For example, the spot where the Barnes and Noble Books is now. Even though it was before my time, I know from other people mentioning it, there was a Scot’s in the 60’s, and then a few other places, including a Lone Ranger Restaurant for a very short period of time around 1970, but I’m wondering if there were any other fast food places there in that spot afterwards, in the 70’s and 80’s. I just can’t remember. Does anyone else here remember if there were?
Yes Joel, I remember that Pioneer Chicken pretty well. I ate there at least times. Pioneer Chicken’s another chain’s that’s now pretty much defunct. I think there may be 1, or 2 left. I also remember the 76 gas station.
The 76 gas station was on the corner, it was the next lot going north on Westwood Blvd..
There was also a pioneer chicken on the north east corner of pico and westwood. I used to like the extra crispy. We used to eat at the Pioneer Chicken when the line to get into Juniors Deli was too long.
I graduated in ‘85, but not at Uni, went to Uni sometime in ('83 or 84 i think?) Graduated at Phoenix High in Venice, also went to Santa Monica High for my first year ('82) Was bouncing around a lot in those days, they were rambunctious times. I shot a Super8 film in front of Uni sometime around '84, a long Spielberg-like tracking shot, should upload that one to youtube. Other stuff you can see at http://www.youtube.com/user/pookie67
Hey D. Packard, if you don’t mind me asking, what year did you graduate from Uni?
That’s right.
I see. So Lamemmle’s operated the Twin, and then Landmark took over, when they re-opened inside the Westside Pavilion. On the top floor, near the food court I believe.
Laemmle operated the theatre.
/theaters/1127/
That’s right! The Landmark Twin! The same Landmark chain that own those really nice theatres on Pico and Westwood now.
It was Lamemmle’s Westland Twin.
It was called the Landmark Twin. They only showed independent movies. I remember seeing alot of stuff about the search for bigfoot and ufo conspiracy films there. There was never a line there, you could go anytime, stay through the next showing (or several showings), and walk into the next theater. Good times.
Sorry for the typo. I meant to say out of Simi as much as possible, of course.
Great, great memories! Does anyone remember that other theatre, down by Overland, next to the May Company. I think they may have been a Laemmle’s, or affiliated with Laemmle’s, and I think it was a 2-screen, or a twinplex, and they showed mostly indies, and foreign films. I saw a few movies at that theatre over the years, and I think it was incorporated into the Westside Pavilion, on the top floor, near the food court. Yes, I really miss the Westside. I try to get over there as much as possible. As a matter of fact, I’ll probably catch a movie at the Landmark Theatres over on Pico and Westwood tomorrow night. Simi Valley’s pretty boring, compared to the Westside. Actually, it’s really boring, compared to the entire LA Basin, and I try to get of Simi as much as possible.
Damon, If you spent any time at the Picwood. You had all these places around the theatre.
wow “Uni” i went there (in the 80’s) too, Cpt Videos arcade was a 2nd home through the early 80’s, I dominated all the Defender machines there. What was the name of the soundtrack record store guy on Pico? This is starting to look more like a ‘pico blvd’ memory thread than Picwood theatre
This is starting to get depressing
