We are working diligently to get our 501 (3) c status complete so that we can officially raise money in order to be heard by the Town Board. I think once we get that and get a good chunk of money raised, maybe then the Town will climb on board and help us out. We’ll be announcing our PlazaMAC “Not-for-profit” status very soon, followed by a diligent volunteer based fund drive. Stay tuned. We are a very committed volunteer group that loves cinema, teaching cinema, and all that it can bring to a community.
Deliberately made a point of driving by. Same derelict building surrounded by a chain link fence. Even the banner proclaiming “Blight to light” is looking blighted.
It’s a real shame, as I don’t see how a vacant lot will be much better than the shambles of a building there now. Across the street they “removed blight” too when they tore down the old True Value hardware store, and now that the “blight” is gone we have a chain link fence with a pile of sand in the middle and supports holding up the last remaining wall of the torn down building next to the Salvation army building. Yeah, “much” better….
Yes, it seems odd, that while much effort has been made to define what qualifies as “Blight” in that promises of turning “BLIGHT INTO LIGHT,” very little defines what “Light” should be except $$$. And that is a very short sighted plan of operation. The justifying purpose behind any legal seizure of property through “Eminent Domain” should be “for Public and Civic Purpose.” So far that has been limited to the removal of “Blight.”
Again, anything you can do to spread the word on our classes and screenings will help to support our efforts.
When I drove by the Plaza the other day there’s a poster with the rendition of the “Plaza” in your proposal. I was hoping they would consider it, but if they are tearing it down, doesn’t sound like it.
Too bad. With all the work they have been doing to East Main Street….new sidewalks, trees, lamp posts, and sewer system, this would seem to be taylor made for the new Main St.
The Town of Brookhaven now owns the old Plaza Theatre and they plan to tear it down and have a big July 4th type affair with a parade and everything – all about getting rid of the blight. So far they have nothing for the “light” part of the promise, but we’re all working on that – together. Letters to the Town will help. We guessed this would be their plan, so our plan B has been to show that we have an audience and students. We have our not-for-profit papers, and are looking for investors, grants, funders to build a PlazaMAC in this same location. Please spread the word for us. I’m on your “mailing” list so I’ll hear about forthcoming events. But what’s the story on the Plaza building? If they tear it down is there a plan B for PlazaMac?

So what’s happening on this?
PlazaMAC screenings and classes are happening in temporary spaces while the Town decides how it will replace “The Blight with Light.”
The PlazaMAC had an event on February 23rd at the BHB announcing the founding of the George Stoney School of Documentary Filmmaking. The Mayor Paul Pontieri came to welcome George Stoney (95 yrs old) and to present to him a brass plate with his engraved photo and the school of doc. They had another fundraising event that made the news as well on March 20th. You can view all of this on the www.plazamac.org website. So it is all happening. Of course, politics plays into everything. The tearing down of the PlazaMAC has long been in the agenda of politicians running for office. Now they need to take the lead and offer matching funds and efforts to bring on “The Light.”
I also get email updates from the plaza group, about their screenings upstairs at the Brickhouse Brewery, and thought that the Brickhouse was just sort of their temporaty place until the Plaza could be used. But this is sort of strange it’s not mentioned at all in the article.
Yes, I don’t entirely understand the whole thing either. I did attend one of the Plaza events at the Brickhouse Brewery, and really did think that they were supposed to go into the Plaza when it was taken over by the town. But there’s not even a mention of it in the article. Any update would be appreciated.
I signed up to get program alerts from you guys at one of those Alive After Five evenings in Patchogue. I have yet to attend a screening but, if the stars are in perfect allignment and you’re showing something I’d like to see……In the meantime keep up the battle. I don’t see what’s announced as being related to the efforts you have been making. Now, a couple of years ago, demolition would have been the preferred option.
Yes it is strange that after all the proposals and meetings with the Town, presentations,screenings, renderings and a ton of volunteer work, that not only the Town ignores the vision of replacing Blight with Light, but the members of East Patchogue Focus don’t mention it either, as they once claimed it was their dream and vision to revitalize the area with a Media Arts Center. What’s going on? What’s wrong with this picture?? The only people continuing to carry the dream is a small stubborn group behind the Media Arts Center screening their films at the BrickHouse Brewery Loft space www.plazamac.org You should check out their programming and get behind this dream.
I thought that the original building was going to be used rather than tearing it down and rebuilding. When you look at the artist’s rendering of the PlazaMAC exterior it just looks like a renovation of the old building.
At LONG last, The Plaza Theater is after a LONG battle, and a very long time, in the hands of the Town. The Plaza Arts Center can now move forward….
This blight from East Main Street can finally be turned into a viable property again.

They are really pushing the Plaza Media Arts concept with a lot of publicity and the showing of indy films at a local site under the PLAZAMAC auspices. They are on the web at www.plazamac.org They are also on facebook as plazamac.
Now that this is cleared up maybe we should shift to the Granada site for any additional info on that theatre. I put one comment there today and am researching something else.

Actually, I am the one that added the Granada Theater here to this site, and Two Guys came up in my research. I am the “Chris” who added the Granada Theater.

I didn’t question them about the sloping floor and they didn’t volunteer anything. I did get a few more bits on the Granada which I put on that site. If you notice in the heading of the Granada it specifically mentions Two Guys.
Oh you are right rvb!! Yes it was Two Guys…that is it…don’t know where I got the other name from. That’s the name – you got it. Did they mention the “sloping floor” as well? Again I believe it was an auto parts store but I could be wrong about that. Thx. for asking Hans and his wife!!
