Plays a lot of move overs from the MANOR!
The 4th Annual Charlotte Film Festival used the Park Terrace Cinema in 2009 as a venue for its festival. This was because it was the first time the CFF used actual “Film” and not just DVD or HD Cam etc. The film BRONSON was screened there during the festival in its only Charlotte screening of the film (it was never released at any of the 13 Art-House Screens). Things went so well it is rumored that Park Terrace will host two screens for the 5th Annual Charlotte Film Festival in Sept of 2010.
The function of the Park Terrace is showing mostly foreign and independent films of interest as well as some documentaries and also first-run features. It will played second-run films on a limited basis and re-issue of some classic films.
I recently found this theatre of the 60’s era…nice to see it still standing in the Charlotte area.

the world premiere of Steven Spielburg’s masterpiece “The Color Purple” took place at the Park Terrace in November of 1985. It was the second of two North Carolina premieres that this movie had. The other world premiere took place in Raleigh that same year.
Was also part of ABC Southeastern Theatres chain during the 1970’s.
The Empire Strikes Back played at the Park Terrace to capacity crowds in 1980. I think the original auditorium seated over 800 top 900. At the time it was a three-screened cinema with the largest auditorium still around with its huge widescreen.
Was at one time part of the Plitt Theatres chain and later on Cineplex-Odeon.
The Park Terrace was first twinned in 1975.
The Park Terrace has been converted to an art house as part of Regal’s Cinema Art programming arm. This is probably in anticipation of the rumored closing of the Manor Theater which is the areas long time art house. the Manor is also programmed by Regal and is only a mile or two away from the Park Terrace. It’s unlikely both will stay open long with this programming format.
Also, the world premier of the Elvis Presley movie ‘Speedway’ took place at the Park Terrace on June 12, 1968
The time capsule in front of the theatre is to be opened on the 50th anniversary of the opening, May 11, 2014. I used to think I would be “old” by that time!

Oh my gosh! I worked at PT when ESB sold out in the 80’s. This is Pam
I used to be an asst mgr at the Park Terrace in the early 80’s. Watched the debut of The Empire Strikes Back among many others there. It was only a 2 plex back then, one very large, 600? seats and the other 200 seats. We sold out the large theatre for The Empire Strikes Back for weeks. Actor Tim Parati was an usher there while studying Theatre at UNCC.
I have been attending movies at this theater for years and I’ve always enjoyed it. It started out in ‘64 as one big single screen auditorium. Years later another large auditorium was constructed along side the original making it a very nice twin. Later still the original auditorium was twinned into two narrow black boxes making it a triple. I always preferred to see movies in the remaining large auditorium with its 40’ screen rather than either of the two narrow halls. The construction of new stadium style multiplexes in the 90’s around town forced yet another remodeling. This time the footprint wasn’t enlarged but the original auditorium was carved up into 4 screens and the first addition was made into 2 screens. The resulting 6 screens are all nice. Two screens are very small but one screen still retains it’s 40' width although the seating area is only half as deep. All in all this remains a great place to see a movie in Charlotte. The lobby and exterior have remained basicly unchanged throughout all the renovations.
I remember the time capsule very well. I was a kid in the late ‘60s and remembering seeing 'Camelot’ there as well as ‘Born Free’. I always loved to imagine what it would be like when they opened the time capsule. Here is a link to a great pic of the theatre.

Robby from Charlotte: If you read this and are interested, the City Council will be having their weekly meeting on Monday at 600 E. 4th Street at 7 to discuss the future of the Carolina Theatre. We plan to attend and hope others who want to see this historical theatre become the jewel in Queen Charlotte’s crown attend this important meeting, too. The issue is #12 on the docket and can be read on the City Council website.
I don’t know if it has been recovered (or covered over), but the Park Terrace has a time capsule buried in front of it. It was supposed to be opened in 2014.

We are in NC so will check out this ‘charmingly dated’ art moderne theater!
