Wow its not that bad now with the new JBL sound system 56KW THX! I guess the laser show is a slight kick in the teeth because it doesn’t make a first impression like it did between 1989 and 1995 which was the last time I can remember the laser show, unless it was a few years before?

Just heard from a source a former Empire projectionist, that Empire is to transformer, there’s that word again transform! Yes, the foyer into Empire 4, has anyone seen any construction going on up there recently?

Last film I think I saw at this Odeon was the “Alice’s adventures in wonderland” 1972 yeah it’s nothing more than a bingo hall now and I’m not interested in playing bingo. Why can’t they just build new places for bingo and leave the cinemas alone.

So those are not Altec A-4 behind the screen. I’ve been going there since the early 1970’s and the upstairs screen does like very nice it’s a pity the sound doesn’t measure up with today’s digital demands because the last film I saw there was Batman Begins in dts, and it sounded dreadful it was too bright sounding close to 100dbA that’s too LOUD! Bass just distorted on one screen channel, “right” all the time since they installed Dolby CP-500 and QSC and a few dozen surrounds JBL 8330. but they paid no attention to removing those old loudspeakers that where installed in there back in the 1960’s.

No sub bass channel array behind the screen, and the last time I saw behind the screen the HF horns left and right where placed on the floor! The centre channel HF horn was where it was supposed to be. What was the chief projectionist thinking at that site by placing the HF horns on the floor! All the directional sounds where lost on raiders of the lost ark and the rest of the Indiana Jones films that where shown there around 2003 I think each week rather than back to back in one night, poor show that was.

Transformers what a load of bollocks!

After getting of the shock of missing DIE HARD in THX and after sitting though another gruelling Michael Bay load of loud nonsense that made no sense to duologue intelligibility not when its spoken a fast paces where you’d need at least a few moments for it to settle down instead you end up listening to cacophony of dialogue that overlaps and overlaps into sheer load of loud Michael Armageddon bollocks Bay up there on the screen!

Yes this is the worse film I have even sat though since Pearl Harbor 2001, I’m never going to see anymore of his trash load of bollocks until he can really prove he can make a film that makes sense without fast dialogue, I mean really what is the rush if the film is 153minuts at least pace the dialogue slowly.

The sound system at the Empire was great 10/10 but would never do justice to Michael Bay, I feel sorry for Kevin O’Connell, as I don’t see him winning an award for this but sometime fate as a strange way of twisting things around for the better who knows he might, maybe?

I only have a few Michael Bay films on DVD The Rock Armageddon but that’s as far as it goes I might, might buy Transformers on DVD the very least rent it for sound test on my JBL THX sound system later in the year or when even it comes out, hell I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. Armageddon!

This was dominating two THX screens at the VUE cinema on Thursday well one actually it was (interlocked) and a few other substandard screens now that is taking the Mickey and I wanted to see Fantastic 4 in THX. So did I bother seeing The Simpson’s in THX no way in bugger that.

The rest of the mighty Crown amplifiers are housed behind the THX baffle with cable runs travelling down from the booth so all the control is handled from there, booth surround amplifiers are housed in the booth.

I was sat in the front row along with a new friend who overheard my name while calling on the intercom and was rather surprised to see me there has he’s only read a few posts on different forums sites where I have shown great interest in the Empire and the THX sound system program.

I measured nearly 120dbc on the SPL db metre towards the final battle with transformers transforming the streets into a battle zone, it was right at a point where the sound all the mid and highs where faded down and the mighty JBL 4645C cluster array of x16 dropped down mighty DEEP!!!

I don’t like the typeface that the designer used as anyone got a bullet please! Bring back the late 1980’s look that rocked.

By the way is there any pictures of this conversion? I know that Fred, who once projected at the EMPIRE does some really neat looking videos on Youtube, I wonder if he’s covering this issue?

I don’t know about changing the auditorium I think it should be left as it is it looks fantastic I mean out of this WORLD!
I liked the look of the outside during the late 1980’s with the word EMPIRE all lit up it looked the part and the advertisement of 70mm Dolby films in THX made it all so very tempting to step inside.
I seem to remember when the Warner West End was all knocked down except the front that remained that was a nice touch, so I hope they don’t go too far over the top with the front of the EMPIRE.

What’s the cubic volume size of the Empire?

What is the lowest frequency the sub bass array can possibly generate and highest sound pressure level?

Saw “Maverick” there in Dolby Stereo SR type THX sound system. One thing that I remember was the projectionist “Andy Symes” chief projectionists was on the ball when! Pop Berrr Blerrrrr sounds where coming out of all the loudspeakers, sounded like when you remove an RCA or phone lead where the negative end of the lead isn’t making contact with the audio component.

Still it was quite an impressive Dolby Stereo SR THX presentation, not as impacting as the Empire or High Wycombe. I did manage to get to talk to Andy, that day. He was kind enough to show me around the THX booth, very impressive.

Saw “Lawrence of Arabia” there back in 1988 WOW stunning performance on that huge screen! The interior decoration was very nice, I like deep curved screen and the lighting above it, also the sides of the walls was also very appalling to me.

The mighty sound system when it first started up was top even for a sub standard approach without “THX” it was great sounding with six-track Dolby Stereo SR type.

Bass thundered around me with a deep rumbling, “No Prisoners, No Prisoners.”

I would be gutted to see it as it is now, a shoebox you say I don’t believe that, thou I have seen Odeon do this to one of its largest screens at the Odeon Westover Road. Someone should kick them in the a££ for doing that. Clearly the word multiplex has gone to there heads!

andysummers commented about Omniplex High Wycombe on Jan 9, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Wow didn’t see this screen here! Well I remember seeing “Arachnophobia” at the THX screen back in 1990 WOW what a sound presentation it had “it literally pressed” on your body without any colourisation of the sub bass and bass frequencies.

Midrange sounds where easy to pin point across the screen along with excellent surround coverage made me look around to my sides and rear during the “THX Broadway” trailer fantastic.

The opening credits of “Arachnophobia” was very deep but before I get there I do however remember just popping into see what it sound like as a friend and I drove up to High Wycombe during the weekend. After buying our tickets we had to wait nearly two hours before the next showing. But that didn’t stop me for just standing at the back of the auditorium.

The scene that was playing was a low level scene with quite music dialogue and sound effects level. Having already seen the film once at the poorly, Odeon Westover Road! The sound at the back of the cinema was all over my body, it was pressing with such tightness, where it just wowed me.

Stepping out quietly we waited until the next showing.

The opening credits of “Arachnophobia.”

I have heard a few films at the Empire Leicester square that delighted me such pleasurable surprise, but this one was in my face from the moment “Trevor Jones” score started it just grew louder and louder not too loud but right on the money of THX specifications standards. Each octave just hit me in the stomach and chest!

The opening score must have lasted 8 or 10 minutes until it faded down in the mix. Anyway one of the best THX sound system presentations I’ve seen there. Sadly the site no longer has THX sound thou I’m sure it still sounds fairly good but without the delights of THX I guess it would be lacking power and performance.
