Out here on the West Coast, we still have many of the most beautiful theaters in Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles! Its a movie palace lovers dream just to see them up close and go through them.
So nice to see a wonderful movie palace reach its 80th anniversary on this date and
still going strong since its opening day. Three cheers for the El Capitan!!
The auditorium was so run down by the 1980s. It really needed a major overhaul. I always wondered how it looked beneath that dreadful looking so-called modernized plaster job. Look what was uncovered and restored! What a big difference…
Actually, the photos I’ve seen of the lobby and auditorium, it was a very simple version of deco design using stencils and simple ornament and light fixtures. Most likely due to Depression-era budget…
The El Capitan, Hollywood Pantages, Grauman’s Chinese, Music Box, all have been restored to their glory days of yesteryear. Still waiting for the last of the grand movie palaces of Hollywood Boulevard to reclaim its past as well.
I’m still waiting for photos on the Look Inside column!!

The storefront section of the Los Angeles would look much more appealing if the ornament was restored to its former appearance!
Sure. Go to www.lapl.org and click on browse the photo collection. Type in Golden Gate Theatre, and you will find four photos of the theater…
Actually, the Long Beach Press-Telegram ran an interesting story last year about that tunnel with pictures of it then and now.
A most happy anniversary today for this most wonderful movie palace on the 75th year of its opening day!!
I totally agree with that!!
Apparently, some readers are confusing this art deco Warner Beverly Hills theater with the onion-shaped domed Beverly theater.
Cool! Perhaps I can get a copy of it.
I was wondering the same thing…
Its the same photo as 5 comments up!!
It turns out to be the CALIFORNIA Theatre. See www.shomler.com for photos.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you just the book, like so many of us did.
It’s amazing how so much can be said about one theater!!

There seems to be statuary missing from upstairs private box/projection room area in main auditorium.
Why haven’t they rehung the lantern on the main auditorium chandelier?
Why do you guys always make a such a big deal over the seating in so many theaters?
