This movie was the big screen adaption of the hit Gothic TV soap opera
“Dark Shadows”,with all the original cast,and almost the same budget.
The TV show was shot at two different ABC studios in Manhattan,
and ran from 1966 to 1971.There was another movie called “House of
Long Shadows in 1971 starring David Sebly.
I went with my older brother to see these James Bond movies
for the first time.My brother had the DC comic adaption of Dr.No,
I read it over and over again.
This was a Mexican import by K.Gordon Murray,dubbed into English.
K.Gordon Murray imported other Mexican movies like “PUSS N” BOOTS,
plus a lot of Mexican horror movies,“BRAINIAC”,“CURSE OF THE CRYING WOMAN”,and"SAMSON IN THE WAX MUSEUM" etc.
This was the first movie I saw at the Lindenhurst theater
when I was eight years old. At this time Nabisco cereal had Mary Poppins toys
in specially marked boxes,one of Mary Poppins and the other one of Bert.These were spring loaded and the figures would pop out of a
little plastic chimney.
Disney’s"Black Beard’s Ghost" was released the same time as Disney’s
“The One and Only Genuine Original Family Band”;which was playing at
Radio City Music Hall.The famous studio didn’t give the attention and
publicity “Black Beard’s Ghost” deserved,considering it starred
Peter Ustinov,Dean Jones,and Suzanne Pleshette.
Operation Crossbow premiered at the Empire Theater Leicester Square,
London where it was presented in 70mm. In the U.S. it was only shown
in 35mm. Operation Crossbow was a huge hit in Great Britian,where the people who lived through the WW2 Blitz knew what it was all about.
In the U.S it did not do as well,and in 1966 it was re-released as
“Great Spy Mission.
