The theatre you are thinking of was the Cinema 733, which indeed shared a building with Paul’s Mall and the Jazz Workshop.

You probably saw all of those at the first Beacon Hill Theatre, the one that was torn down in 1969.

And now the Carving Station restaurant has closed.

What happened to the ‘People’s Republic’ that I loved living in from 1979-84? Have all of the left-wingers left government?

Ron Newman commented about Circle Cinemas on Dec 29, 2008 at 1:23 pm

The Brookline TAB posted an article online last Friday:

One last curtain call at Circle Cinema?

I assume it will be published in this week’s printed newspaper. The article confirms that the American Repertory Theatre “scouted out the empty building as the possible setting for an elaborate theatrical piece”, which may or may not be Faust. The ART hasn’t made any decision on whether to go ahead with such a site-specific production.

The TAB article also discusses prospects for condominium, hotel, or other development on the site.

When you were touring the Orpheum, did you happen to notice whether the theatre still has a working projection booth?

Ron Newman commented about National Amusements tied up in family disagreement on Dec 23, 2008 at 4:26 pm

I find it odd that they would think of dismantling the chain when they are right now building a huge new Cinema de Lux complex next to their headquarters in Dedham, MA.

Ron Newman commented about Wollaston Theatre on Dec 23, 2008 at 8:09 am

Second act for Wollaston?

“According to a broker handling the property, a group of individuals and organizations involved in the arts has signed a purchase and sale agreement with the estate of Arthur Chandler. Chandler, who died in April, had owned the theater since 1979 and operated it until its closing in 2003.”

NYK: I don’t understand why you put that link in your comments. It doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the movie.

After this was torn down, what was built in its place?

Just saw this at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, MA yesterday.

Boston Lyric Opera stages its shows at the Shubert. There were several shows this year, and more next spring.

Ron Newman commented about Beekman Theatre on Dec 17, 2008 at 3:37 pm

What name does this theatre use when advertising in the New York Times, Village Voice, and other newspapers?

Ron Newman
Ron Newman commented about Beekman Theatre on Dec 17, 2008 at 2:27 pm

Generally an open theatre should be listed here with its current name. Could CinemaTreasures edit the Description to point out this issue and include a link to the older demolished Beekman theatre?

I don’t understand — why will there be no live performances in other theatres?

Best thing to do is upload them to a photo-sharing site such as Flickr, ImageShack, or PhotoBucket, then post a link to them here.

Can you scan them in and upload them?

Ron Newman commented about Regal in the news on Dec 10, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Regal buying National Amusements would also reduce the Boston area’s number of major chains to two: Regal and AMC. (We’ve also got two Landmark theatres and a few very small regional chains and independents.)

The Pilgrim didn’t become a Chinese restaurant. The nearby Center did, and remains one today.

So, is it the same as the Kincade theatre mentioned in the first comment?

Over at Universal Hub, I speculate some more about Faust and the ART and the Circle Cinemas.

He’s a member of this Flickr group, whose description suggests that the American Repertory Theatre is scouting locations to stage a production of Faust.

What are all those people doing in the closed theatre? Are they looking at it with the idea of reopening it, or demolishing it?

That’s really sad. Is there any way they could apply for an exemption from the sprinkler law?
