oh well, all that money and they couldn’t get their act together, or able to book anything that interesting. Personally I would have booked more music, comedy acts and less theatre, the stage that they built just wasn’t suitable – it was set way too back. Jeesh, throw a screen back up and I’d be happy.
sorry for the blah experience you had at the Egyptian. Yes the ticket taker seemed like a total zombie – the guy gave me 3D glasses to ‘The Karate Kid’ – oh boy! cough “clueless”. I saw the midnight screening of ‘Toy Story 3’ on the XD screen and sat further back than I usually do – fifth row, center. And I thought the sound was great, with sounds emulating from the various speakers – the key ‘best’ scene in 7.1 was the near the end, where the garbage is spinning around – to great dizzying effect (which highly benefits from the four discrete speakers in the rear)
personally the'Disney’s Tangled (Rapunzel)‘ trailer just made me cringe, and elicited a “oh brother”

according to Dolby’s link of upgraded 7.1 sound theatres – Regal in and around Washington DC has started the conversion, but the RPX screen hasn’t – that’s very odd, I would have thought E-Walk would have been one of the first tier of theatres to have been converted.
while visiting the theatre today to see ‘The Karate Kid’ (in XD) I enquired about the XD presentation of the upcoming ‘Toy Story 3’ and was told the sound system has been upgraded to 7.1 Discrete sound.
which one is auditorium #2 – I’m drawing a blank? I keep on waiting til the really large screens the ones behind the front concession stand get the digital conversion, since digital projection is key/ideal for the largest screens.
wonder if any of the two 3D screesn will be upgraded to 7.1 sound for the ‘Toy Story 3’ engagement??
personally if I were a theatre owner, I’d just install a Christie Solaria 4K DLP on my largest screen and Dolby 7.1 sound processing and call it a day – screw IMAX. Personally I don’t have a problem with Cinemark’s XD (Barco projector) system – the sound is vastly better than the IMAX-lite screen.
well… um…. even converted to showcase ‘live’ plays/musicals – this theatre is not surviving. I’m not sure where the fault lies, but it’s not able to operate under current management (or lack there of). Personally I’d book concerts and comedy acts/comedians – or even, (shock!] put a screen back up and show movies! Even in it’s current configurement, which I must admit isn’t well suited to live performances – the stage is set way too back.
Oh I don’t doubt ‘Sex and the City 2’ won’t be a megahit, I just think it’s rather assholish on AMC’s part to book this at the Uptown and at Mazza (DC/Maryland’s ‘Rodeo Drive’) when the Avalon wants the piece of the pie as well â€" and they should, since they deserve the money more so, in my opinion. Sure AMC has the clout and power to book anything it wants but they continually screw the Avalon over when it comes to the summer Hollywood fare. I’m really surprised that the closeness and proximity between the Avalon and Mazza is not being compromised, I’m sure though AMC would supercede the Avalon’s booking ability
in a selfish move on AMC’s part (and to undermine the Avalon) they booked ‘Sex and the City 2’ at both the Uptown and Mazza – my money is going to the non-profit Avalon – not the corporate leech.
in a completely asinine move on AMC’s part: AMC has booked ‘Sex and the City 2’ at the Uptown (and Mazza for that matter) I was hoping for ‘Prince of Persia’ – but no luck.

they don’t
I agree that’s a major deterent, AMC’s IMAX-Digital prices first show of the day before noon are $9

apparently the New York Times ad on Sunday (6/20) has denoted the RPX system as having been upgraded to 7.1 digital surround
oh wow, ‘The A-Team’ looked AND sounded great!! – a nice change from the occasional ratty looking 35mm pirnts the Uptown sometimes gets.

and yes, according to Dolby’s website and a call down to the theatre, both auditoriums 12 and 14 have been upgraded to 7.1

any news if the RPX system/auditorium has been upgraded for 7.1 sound for ‘Toy Story 3’?
okay… another question: has the EXT screen been upgraded to 7.1 sound for Friday’s opening of ‘Toy Story 3’??
yeah I was very surprised to see that the restored ‘Metropolis’ bagan last Friday.

word is that ALL 14 screens will be converted to digital projection by as early as October of this year (Barco 4K upgradeable)
special martini drinks are on sale at the concession/bar in with the theme of ‘Sex and the City 2’
For $18.50 I expect them to have cell block technology so that NO one can call/receive/text – at all.
on a different topic, the restored ‘Metropolis’ will be shown a week starting July 9th – woohoo!!
oh I know they don’t give a crap about the Avalon – and given that my money always goes to the non-profit independent theatre – AMC can suck it.
I also noted that Fotokem did a relatively new hidef transfer of the movie which has recentely been shown on MGM-HD
I assume the soundsystem will be upgraded to 7.1 discrete digital sound for ‘Toy Story 3’s 3D engagement?
