I went through the Centers in NC, no luck matching up this theater as no location is given. Date would be 1944, I think. Any help is appreciated: http://tinyurl.com/3bya6c
The building to the right looks the same in both photos. However, it almost looks like the building was cut in half in the later photo, including the marquee.
The information tell us that the theater we see in the picture is a re-creation of the original Orpheum. Subsequently the status should be closed/demolished. I wouldn’t list the function as museum since the original theater was never used for that purpose. Thanks for clearing that up.
I was around there today. A very nice Japanese gentleman, maybe eighty years old, was heading into the theater. We talked about the old Linda Lea, but he wasn’t familiar with it. Incidentally, the Higgins building across the street was being demolished. It will be gone by the end of the week. The entire east side of Main between 2nd and 3rd, except for the two buildings on either corner, is fenced off. Something large may be going up there.

I took this photo in January 2007. Interesting “then and now” comparison with the new theater:

I’ll bet the tenants of the Higgins loft building at 2nd and Main are thrilled with that prospect.

Agreed. Meeting adjourned.
Shouldn’t there be an aka of Publix, based on the photos posted on 8/8 and 12/18?
Here is a 1927 photo. You can see the Capitol a few doors down on Washington Street:
