You’re welcome, anniegirl. I think the phone # for the Forest Hills location of Four Ones was, and still is, (718) 441-1111. For Ridgewood, it was (718) 456-1111.

Bway is also very knowledgable about the LIRR in NYC.

Yes, BklynJim, St. Peter was taken almost 2000 years ago.

My name may be Peter, but I’m not that fisherman apostle a.k.a. Simon Bar Jonah …

Thanks for the info on the Peerless. I must have forgotten about it somehow.

My dad remembers his kid sister Gerry getting nits or lice in her hair at another “itch” : the infamous Decatur Theater on Bway in Bushwick, which also has a page on this site.

I’ll keep in touch with you about your trip back to Ridgewood ….

I was last in the Ridgewood Saturday Sept. 12 1992 to see “Hellraiser III : Hell On Earth”, when it was a five-plex.

Eight feet of snow ! What about the towns that got twelve to thirteen feet ?

And that’s just the snowfall ! How much higher were the drifts and the piles created by plowing ?

I think either Bway or our fine British comrade Ken Roe may have been the last of us posting here to have actually been inside the Ridgewood Theater.

Sir Peter ! I’m honored, BklynJim ! Who knighted me ? You ? Thanks !

Thanks for the brief on 1955’s “Creature With an Atom Brain”, and its original Bushwick – Ridgewood run.

Bonomo’s Turkish Taffy ? That’s what you lost a molar to at the Bushwick, right ?

“We’re gonna taste Turkish Taffy ! Hey ! … it’s de-lish !”

If, like Milk Duds, it’s so hard to get out of your teeth, (blowtorch required, as suggested by George Carlin) maybe it should be used as temporary filling material.

Where was the Peerless Theater ?

I last walked by the Ridgewood this past Feb. 9th 2007. I wanted to go in and see “Hannibal Rising” but the theater wasn’t open yet, and I had other business to tend to.

Thanks for the update, AL, however dismal, and thanks for continuing to try.

After the spring thaw ? We’ve got about a month of winter left, but the snow and sleet of last week’s Valentine’s Day storm has been melting and evaporating rather rapidly since it fell.

George Zucco … not to be confused with George Cukor !

Up next …. “The Job That Ate My Brain”, with guest appearance by Benny And The Bureaucrats ….

Anyone remember Leslie Banks ? Edna West ? Nova Pilbeam ?

Thanks, Warren. I used to have an e-mail acquaintance, who posted on this site as “Karl B” about several Cypress Hills, Bklyn theaters, such as the Adelphi, near Fulton and Crescent Sts., who delivered the Long Island Press as a boy in his home neighborhood of Cypress Hills in the latter 1940’s and early 1950’s. He remarked that, when the stores in Jamaica had sales, and ran ads in the Sunday press, it was as thick and heavy as the Sunday New York Times, and expressed wonder that he didn’t get a hernia delivering them !

Almost as “immortal” as the Ridgewood Theater itself !

Now, how about “Caltiki, The Immortal Monster” ?

Not hard for a large canvas bag to be immortal !

Good for you, frankie ! How’s “The Flying Serpent” ? Does George Zucco look as immortal as ole Quetzlcoatl himself ?

I remember reading about this movie, along with many others like it, a long time ago, in “Famous Monsters Of Filmland” magazine.

Published by the “immortal” Forrest J. Ackerman !

Yes. The last day of operation on the Rockaway Line, from Ozone Park, to Penn Station, Manhattan, was June 11, 1962.

Anniegirl :

The station was on the same level as the tracks, just north of Metropolitan Avenue (going towards Yellowstone Blvd.) one wooden platform on each side.

My parents and I used Four Ones Car Service when we lived in Ridgewood, until October 1999. Also Lindy’s.

Didn’t the 8th Street Playhouse become the Art Cinema, or were they two separate theaters ?

KarenN, please go see “Hannibal Rising” for me. Thanks.

The “Parkside” station of the LIRR Rockaway Line, now abandoned, used to be right near where Woodhaven Lanes is now. Go to the page for the Cinemart Theater, # 4615, click on the last link provided by Lost Memory. Scroll down to the picture of the RR overpass with the sign for the “brushless” car wash. The “Parkside” station was once just to the left (north) of that sign. The overpass is the abandoned Rockaway Line.

Bway will back me up on this.

Was The Cinemart relegated to The Forbidden Zone by Drs. Zaius and Maximus, orang-utans emeritus ?

Thanks so much, Lost Memory, for those images of Metropolitan Avenue. I LOVE that part of Forest Hills, and was last there this past July 8, 2006 !

PKoch commented about Alhambra Theatre on Feb 20, 2007 at 12:00 pm

Yes, Geo 1, Alhambra was the name of the theatre in Jackson’s King Kong. I noticed it right away, and so did my dad, when he saw it, for he remembers going to the Alhambra at Knickerbocker and Halsey as a boy and young man. He also attended the school across Halsey St. from it when it was “Halsey Junior High” circa 1931-33.

Thanks, Lost Memory, I think I remember now. It’s near the southeast corner of Woodhaven Blvd, and Metropolitan Ave. between Metropolitan and the LIRR tracks, isn’t it, near where there was talk of building a multiplex cinema for awhile ?

You’re most welcome, KarenN, to my reply. My pleasure.

Is anything cheap to do anymore ? Perhaps watch dvd’s at home while eating popcorn popped in one’s microwave.

Where exactly is Woodhaven Lanes ?

PKoch commented about UA Astoria Sixplex on Feb 13, 2007 at 9:23 am

Thanks, Warren. Was the LI Daily Star a predecessor of the Long Island Press ? How was the Astoria related (if at all) to the Queensboro / Elmwood once it had switched to films only in 1926 ?

You are most welcome, KarenN., to my comments, and thank you for yours. Yes, Greenpoint could use some movie theaters. Sorry, I do not remember the bowling alley on Meserole Avenue.

Thank you Bway, NativeForestHiller, and Christina Wilkinson, for these photos and details !

Is Liberty Department Stores leaving, or planning to leave, the former RKO Madison Theater, perhaps permitting an investigation or maybe even a restoration of what’s left of the former theater interior ?
