No Shell station when I was there in the late eighties. We did have a fountain. The homeless guys used to try and steal my poor little goldfish in the fountain, to eat I guess. Not much of a meal.
I used to manage the Penguin restaurant on the corner of Olympic and Lincoln in Santa Monica. The owners told the staff that the restaurant was being closed for two days due to plumbing problems. Guess what, employees, time to find a new waiter job.
There is apparently some interest in reopening the tunnel once the current construction is completed. As I understand, the tunnel is structurally sound, just a little musty after being sealed off for several years. I don’t think there would be any stores, it would just be a pedestrian walkway underneath Ocean to the east side of the street. My source was someone who works in the Breakers building on the intersection of Pine and Ocean.
This 1930 LA Times ad shows the Red Mill at 4549 Whittier. A different ad I saw a while ago put the Red Mill at 5215, at the time I added it as a new theater. I don’t know which is correct: http://tinyurl.com/yu686m

Nothing but hotels and office buildings on that stretch of Ocean today.

I solved the Alamitos Avenue question. The building was an auditorium and a skating rink, but never a theater. It just looks like one.
I’m driving from Long Beach to WLA at rush hour, so if the venue changes I hope someone lets me know.
Ave atque vale.
The shots of the interior looked okay. Is there a problem anticipated with the re-opening?

When it was a bowling alley in the seventies, there wasn’t much left of the interior. I never saw it when it was a theater.
