ANOTHER THOUGHT FROM THE PAST:When I got my first payroll check from Loews after making Asst. Manager the check at the top said Loews/Lorrilard. I asked my boss about the Lorrilard part and he said Loews owned Lorrilard Tobocco Company, plus CNA Insurance, and Bolivard watch Company. Its funny now that we selled cigarettes at the concession stand in those days. If I remember correctly they were $2.00 a pack in those days,at that price we still sold about 20 packs a week, even though you could not smoke in the auditorium. But in those days smoking was permited in the lobby and we had ashtrays placed there.Things have sure changed in the last 30 years.
Of course Chuck, sorry for the typo, too bad he did not live to see this one or many other of his theatres open.As a child he was known as “Max” Loew as I am sure you know. His brother Henry was the manager of the Loews National until his death at the age of 66.
Thanks Al for the story.
Relinking!
Amazing stuff 5 years later. Thanks everyone.

Nice 1958 photo of the Loews Alpine posted by Warren.
Too bad there are not more photos.
Times have sure changed in the last 50 years, I remember the Loews and Paramount in Nashville having “Colored Balconys” back in the day.

This theatre was going to be built as the Hippodrome, when it was still being built Marque Loew bought and finished it,Renaming it the Loews Akron.
Sad photos of the demolition,Marion.
Thanks Al great vintage photo.
Interesting that vertical in the photo posted by ken mc on May 15,2006 reads Loews and United Artists.
Thanks Gordon and Phillip.
Thanks for the excellent introduction and photos Phillip.
What a history of this theatre.
I understand that Chuck, but there is no mention of movies being played there in the intro or comments, maybe you would know?
A second thought, did this theatre ever show movies?Function just lists live performances in the header.
Great signbords in the 1954 photo.
