True Class, WILL YOU PLEASE GIVE IT UP AND LEAVE THE SITE! Your postings seem even more ridiculus than some of Dupage Dudes and Conserned Taxpapers. I do not see you doing anything constructive to save the theater, you just say “Tear it down!” Perhaps True Class is trying to get the moderators to shut down the board with her repetitive postings.
I have an idea for the theater. Since there seem to be two groups that want to save the theater, the ones that want to save it as a theater and those that want to turn it into a library, why don’t the two groups work together and share the theater? The library can be put into the part of the theater that held the shops and apartments. The theater can then be restored and used as a theater. There can then be one referendum, to save the building and restore it to use as a library and theater. Tax money can be used to create the library and stabalize the building. Funds can then be raised to restore the theater.
Dupage Dude, I do think that True Class needs to be removed from this site. I remember when she posted your address on this site, which is very dangerous to do. She also threatened you. If I where you, I would talk to the moderators of this site about it, although I doubt they will listen. Why would you need to be against the theater to protect your propery values? If the theater is restored, that should help your property values. If it is demolished, it seems that they are going to build a parking garage. That will definely not help your property values!
hdtv267, Deb is one of the few people who in recent weeks has kept off the Board, and when she does post, she has something constructive to say. What she is trying to do is not childish or inane. She is trying to get both sides to work together to save the theater. If you want to shut off inane comments, why don’t you try to get Dupage Dude or Concerned Taxpayer 2 to quit posting? I doubt the moderators will ever shut off this board, they themselves would see that as censorship. The people against the theater have boards on which they can post there inane and childish comment. This site had been the board for people that supported the theater to post comments.
Dupage Dude, why do you care what Deb Dynako is doing? At least she is doing something, other than insulting and irritating everyone on this board. What is wrong with her talking to people against the theater? Maybe she can accomplish something that way, because it is obvious to everyone but you that your way is not working.
Challenger, sorry I have attacked you in the past, please don’t attack me any more. I don’t like to respond to DuPageDude, I find his comments on here rather annoying, but I also feel the same about Concerned Taxpaper. I do support some of what he says, mainly when it comes to the mall and convention center. What his says is legitimate. Why do none of these anti-tax people complain about all the money going into those projects? I can see why you don’t want TIF money going into the project, but Concerned Taxpaper even complains about the use of Save America’s Treasures money. That program gets about 10 million dollars in funding from the federal government, which has a yearly budget in the TRILLIONS. That money will go somewhere, why shouldn’t it go to Lombard? I don’t consider historic tax credits a waste of tax money, they have been used successfully on restoration projects for about 30 years
As to Concerned Taxpayers constant “that sound is the sound of bulldozers coming”, haven’t you been saying that for the past year? Where are those bulldozers? Let’s just hope those bulldozers wait long enough for the people of Union to take what they want of the theater.
Save America’s Treasures grants are not given out to just any preservation project. What are the “tax credits” that are talked about? Could those be historical tax credits? Because if they are, this is the kind of project they where created for.
Oh boy Challenger, they spent 10% of the money given to them by the city. Had they been given all that money, the eyesore you guys complain about might be in decent structural shape. Will someone please answer the following question, if restoration had happened, who would have owned the theater? Would it have been the Freinds or the city, or someone else?
I don’t know anything about theater restoration. They only thing that is certain is that you must have the city government’s support. What I find sad about this situation is that you have a group that wants to save the theater, but the council is set against saving it. Instead of rejecting the RSC plan and asking for the whole community to get involved in thinking of uses for the theater, they decided to demolish the theater. This is a time for everyone in the community to join together, put aside their differences, and work for a solution.
Deb, there are many preservation efforts that are this difficult. Just ask preservationists in St. Louis. They fought to save an 1896 downtown office building, and didn’t succeed. They even had the Nation Trust for Historic Preservation against them.
Deb, I can’t think of any theaters that have been pulled from the brink of destruction, though I am sure there are cases. I do know that there have been theaters in worse condition that have been restored. I do know of several other buildings though that have been saved. There are many cases of theaters that have reinvented a downtown. Look at the Normal Theater in Normal. It is about the same size as the Dupage, though not as old. It doesn’t even have a stage, but it still manages to survive.
An open dialog must be had between both sides. Give up on the RSC plan, it won’t happen. If you bring the people for and against the theater together, you will accomplish a lot more than just arguing with them. In order for any project to succeed, BOTH sides must give up somethings and chance there stance.
Will the people with the following names please LEAVE this site so others can actually discuss plans for this theater: DuPageDude, Dupe Supporter, Dupe Neighbor, and Lombardian District 4.
Challenger, I have said repetedly on this site that I feel the “Freinds” are partially to blame. If you don’t want people not familiar with this situation to post “dribble”, get off of a website that is for people from all over the WORLD. If you expect for people that are just from Lombard to post comments, don’t use this message board. I only call you guys “anti-preservationists” because I don’t know of a better term to use. I don’t think you guys know each other, although you all do post on a website of your own. I wish that when this theater does come down that you guys wait and have this “party” after the theater has come down. Let the theater have its last hour in peace, and that goes for the supportors too.
Oh, and if you don’t want to be know as “anti-preservationists” don’t talk about celebrating the destruction of this theater
So a rested theater will not bring in restaurants, retail, and other businesses? As to the “terrible looking theatre which is such an embarassment”, wouldn’t a restored facade, even if there isn’t a theater in it, be a good way to show off the city to the commuter’s going through town?
I belive that the Dupage was on that list of grants that were released. It had been removed at the request of the city, so the money didn’t show up. So you can’t show me any other pictures of the Dupage? Just as I thought, all you can do is offer me a pile of rubble. I just hope the museum acts fast, because the city will want to destroy the whole theater, so no visual record will exist of there mistake. Too bad that this group is so against the theater, or else they could have worked with the city and the “Friends” to save it.
Wow what awful pictures. The high school I went to was in worse shape than the theater. If that is the worst damage to the theater, then I am not impressed. The bricks that have fallen off are the exterior bricks, which most likely dont' offer that much structural support. If you guys want to shock us out of towners as to how bad the theater is, get some better pictures.
I don’t think a white knight would stand a chance. He could come in with a check for the full restoration and there would still be people against it. I find it funny how just a few weeks ago, people on this site where saying that the grant money would never come. When it was reveled that that money would have come, had the council not rejected it, those people started saying “It wasn’t enough.” Funny how these people can change their excuses against the theater, but the “Friends” can’t even defend there plans.
I hope the people of Union enjoy the remains of the Dupage Theater just as much as some of the people on this site hated it.
Yes Fiscal, have the city accept the grants. Then demolish the theater. Do you want to see this get really ugly? Get the state and federal government involved because the city used that grant money for a project it was not intended for. Fiscal, I must say that you are an idiot.

I agree, think the message board should be wiped clean and shut off from any more comments.

Challenger, how much have you donated to the restoration?
As to Concerned Taxpayers constant “that sound is the sound of bulldozers coming”, haven’t you been saying that for the past year? Where are those bulldozers? Let’s just hope those bulldozers wait long enough for the people of Union to take what they want of the theater.

I ment to say restored in my comment above, not rested!

Sorry about the double posting, I tried to correct my spelling and accidentally sent it twice.
