Joe, I’m not making light of your typo, as I make enough of them myself, but “ruinewal” does sound like a combination of ruin and renewal, which is quite often the case.
I haven’t been inside this one. I don’t think it’s ever been part of the last remainingf seats program. I’ve been to the Orpheum and the Los Angeles, and I think one of the shows was at the Million Dollar a few years ago.
This photo had me stumped for a while. If you compare it to the one directly above, it appears that the smaller buildings were the site of the Subway Terminal building, which was completed by 1928 if the date on the preceding picture is correct. The College unfortunately would be a little further south and is out of the picture: http://tinyurl.com/2enk47
I saw “Kindergarten Cop” here in the early 90s. Interesting to explore the theater, which at that time was shabby but still showed the details from the glory days.
I drove by the Ambassador the other day. There’s still part of the old building standing. I thought they had razed it all by now. Tbey did remove Sammy Davis Jr’s Now Grove signage off the post out front, so now it says Ambassador as it used to.
This is supposed to be an 1899 photo from the CA state library. The view is Seventh & Grand, looking north. The sign appears to say Grand Avenue Theatre, as far as I can tell, so it could be a predecessor: View link
How many drive-ins did Pacific sell in the mid 1990s? I remember the one in Culver City on Sepulveda disappearing around the same time.
Was the Mayan ever used for a church? There’s a sign on the theater in this 1950 photo that says “Immanuel”:

Protest, 1950. It looks like the zoom function has returned:

Read Joe’s comment of 7/12/07.
Here is a 1920 photo from the USC archive. I assume the signs are advertising the impending construction of the RKO:

You can see both the College and what may be a Peoples theater in this USC photo:

The space looks pretty large today, as I was peeking the other day. I still can’t get into the building, however.
Here is a photo from the CA state library. The date is in question:

Type “CA state library reagh” in Google, you will get the site.
I see that Joe posted that photo on 12/13/05. Apologies. I thought I had seen it somewhere before.

This photo is dated 1975, which is about the time the theater was being used by the church. Hard to tell from the marquee, though:
