Although I have no desire to see a film like Pirates 4, I am disappointed that the Ziegfeld is deferring to 3D presentations. I am really looking forward to the last Harry Potter film, I have seen every one on opening night at the Ziegfeld. Unfortunately, I fear I will have to break that tradition if the Ziegfeld is not going to be showing it in 3D. I know 3D gives them a little extra revenue, but since this is a theater for real film lovers, wouldn’t management acknowledge that their audience does not prefer 3D? I hope I’m wrong, but I fear I won’t be…
Just goes to show the drawing power of the classics on the big screen at the Ziegfeld, whether it’s classic movies or a classic Verdi opera. Give people real quality stuff and they will come out for it.
900 people at the Ziegfeld today !! 900 people at the Ziegfeld today! 900 people at the Ziegfeld today !! A near capacity crowd streaming up the stairs and escalator, through the lobby, nearly filling the theatre, an electric atmosphere of enthusiasm and delight, and for what, you ask—-something from 1853, “Il Trovatore” by Verdi.
Any thoughts?
I am also very glad to see Ed return. New Yorkers with an honest view of our city’s glorious past AFTER 1959 are very rare on this site.
By the way hdtv267, the Ziegfeld exclusive premieres of “RYAN’S DAUGHTER”, “CABARET”, “FELLINI’S ROMA”, “TOMMY”, “CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND”,“APOCALYPSE NOW” and “THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST” were pretty important to movie history.
Thanks, saps. Took a bit of a hiatus. Posted tons when I was at my busiest on this site 2005-2008. Guess I had just run out of salient things to posts. But, now I feel like I might have new things to contribute here and also wanted to renew my notifications for comment updates on these threads. I miss being connected to the various informational posts and goings on at various theaters. Not to mention the nice sense of community on this site. In short… it’s good to be back!
Ed, where’ve you been? It’s nice to see your name all over the threads again.
Are those premieres or engagements? Not sure how “Thor” or “Super 8” will fare, but those other three should ensure a healthy Box Office surge for this theatre!
The theater is not totally dark for the next couple of weeks. There are the MET operas and Memphis for 4 showings as well as a couple of premiers.
Booked into the Ziegfeld:
5/6 – Thor
5/20 – Pirates of the Caribbean 4
6/10 – Super 8
7/1 – The Transformers 3
7/15 – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2
This is per an ad in the Time Out magazine.
No movie is playing this weekend at this theater for two weeks until “Thor” in fake 3D opens.
When is the last time this theater hosted a classic film series? Seems like its been a couple of years, but I’ve been out of the loop with this page since all the old email links were broken a few years back. I assume no classics would mean that the Ziegfeld has been doing rather nicely with its first run bookings?
Correction, around.
Of course 35mm was wround when it opened. I don’t think they showed 16mm films.
The first 70MM engagement opened on Dec. 18th 1969 with “Marooned”.
When did 70mm debut at this theater? I know 35mm was around since it opened in 1969.
When Clearview took over, did they change anything?
All I remember was the velour wall covering replacement and carpet in both the lobby and inside. If you recall, the whole auditorium was once fully carpeted.
In terms of projection, platters were added after much negotiation with the union who didn’t want them here. All this happened about four years into the Cineplex period.
Sound was constantly being upgraded, but usually at the expense of the movie being premiered, as they always found fault with what was there when they did a test run. The showing of restored prints of classic films were always a touchy subject for the sound techs.
In traditional Cineplex Odeon style, prices went up every year.
When Cineplex took over, they replaced all the Walter Reade policy trailers with their own trailers. Clearview took over, and replaced it with the Clearview trailers as well as promos for Cablevision. What did Cineplex change to the Ziegfeld, in terms of projection, sound, and seating and prices?
Cineplex Odeon took over Walter Reade Theatres in 1987. The landlord refused CO’s attempt to multiplex the Ziegfeld.
When did Cineplex Odeon take over the Ziegfeld? I knew they sold it off to Clearview due to the Loews Cineplex merger. Thank god Cineplex didn’t divide the famous screen into a megaplex and kept it the way it was.
Kids who stutter should have a responsible parent take them and explain the language.
PATHETIC is the right word for ratings changes that compensate for parents who have no business raising children and expect movie theatres to do their work for them.
I’m sure there’s some greed involved but my understanding is that the reason for the edit is so that younger people (those under 17) who have a stuttering problem can get in by themselves to see the film. Of course that ignores the fact that the film should never been rated R in the first place! I think it would have been better to let the theatre owners decide of they wanted the new version or wanted to keep running the original. I don’t think it’s PATHETIC to do the edit, just dumb.
I think its PATHETIC to edit this Oscar winning film. Doing an alternative DVD version is one thing but for theatres its just greed.
i agree. BTW, kings speech will be edited to PG-13.
With the sad passing of screen icon Elizabeth Taylor, its time for the Ziegfeld to show the 70mm print of “Cleopatra” that has been shown a few times on the west coast.
Best Picture Winner King’s Speech is playing at this theater, and will continue to do so throughout this weekend.
