Thanks, Bway. What’s the direction of your photo ? I think we’re looking north at the north corner of Grandview and Gates, obliquely northwest on Grandview.
Thanks, Bway. What is the direction of the photo ? I would think, looking north on Halsey, past Knickerbocker, with the eastern corner of Irving Square Park past the left edge of the photo. Odd that Knickerbocker is a one-way street there.
Ridgewood and Bushwick are merged in terms of some social services, such as ones for senior citizens. There is an office on the west side of Gates Avenue between Myrtle and Wyckoff Avenues. The zip was incorrectly given as “11327”. I always cringed when I saw it, and thought of the bureaucratic screw-up and personal misery it may have caused.
I get the feeling that Ridgewood would rather be associated with Glendale than Bushwick for social services.
Thanks, Chris. That looks like the Harman Street side. That shows so much more than what one sees from the el. The newest thing about the building seems to be the metal railing around it at sidewalk level.
Thanks, Bway. I wasn’t sure if the building was still a clinic (contained medical offices). Yes, it is rather unattractive, now that the original facade has been covered.
“Beyond The Door” was released in 1975. I saw it the summer of that year in a theater in Manhattan. I think it was also playing at the Ridgewood Theater then.
I sometimes eat lunch at a restaurant called “Spaghetti Western” on Reade St. near Bway near where I work in lower Manhattan. It used to
be Joe Maxwell’s Bar, the bar for the old Fordham U. which once stood at 290 Bway. My best friend lived there as a kid until he was seven. His dad was the superintendent of the old Fordham U.
Probably because until January 1980 the Madison and Ridgewood were in a postal zone (27, 11227) served by the Brooklyn post office. Also because they are near the Bklyn-Queens border, which some do not know, or care to know, the exact location of.
Thank you, Don Novack, for posting on all these theaters in Ridgewood, and for filling in some blank spaces. To you may go the title of “The Ridgewood Phantom Of The Movies” !
Thank you, Don Novack ! I’ve wanted to know that ever since I started posting on thie board ! The twin bill horror flick you mention may have been the double feature that Robert R keeps mentioning : “Squirm” and “Tentacles”.
Perhaps now we will go from famine to feast on this topic, and extensive debate will now break out as to the date of the RKO Madison’s “last picture show” !
It just occurred to me that there is an irony in many old movie palaces like the Valencia in Queens, and the Loew’s Gates, the Empire, and the Colonial, in Brooklyn, having become churches, in that many conservative congregations and denominations have preached, and warned against many, if not all, movies, for some time now.
The brownish, sepia tint of the vintage photos I have seen would also make it difficult. Ditto Loew’s Pitkin.
I have a friend at work, who’s 7 years 8 months older than me, who went to Loew’s Valencia as a kid. The ceiling was so realistic looking, he thought it was the sky !
Or, better yet, from “Glendale-Ridgewood 11385”, which is how St. John’s and Mary Immaculate Hospitals addressed their mail to my former Ridgewood home.
A gal who used to work in my office, used to live at Knickerbocker Avenue and Covert Street. She would take taxis home from our lower Manhattan workplsce when she left late after working overtime. When she told the cab drivers her destination was “Bushwick”, they wouldn’t go there, but when she said “Ridgewood”, she had no problem getting a cab home.
The address of the Imperial should appear as Brooklyn, N.Y. 11237. The Brooklyn neighborhood it is located in is known as Wyckoff Heights. It was a movie theater in 1932 but had become a Robert Hall clothing store by the mid-1940’s. My older uncle saw the Lugosi “Dracula” film there in 1931 or 1932.
Interesting that it apparently closed in 1956, the year the adjacent IND subway took over from the BMT Fulton St. elevated. The nearest station on both lines would have been Van Siclen (at Pitkin Avenue) on both the Fulton el and the IND subway
Thanks, Bway. What’s the direction of your photo ? I think we’re looking north at the north corner of Grandview and Gates, obliquely northwest on Grandview.
Thanks again, Bway. What’s the direction of the photo ? I think we’re looking west at the corner of Irving and Stockholm.

Thanks, Bway. Sorry to read that. At least, now I know. I’ll look for that, next time I ride the Broadway el past there.
That makes 1666 Broadway and the “Dr. Tucker’s 59 for all pain” building that much more special !
Either RidgeWick or BushWood !

Nice pix, Chris. Thanks. I’ll be there next week !

Interesting sub-genre : “Spaghetti horror” as opposed to “Spaghetti Western”. I can think of a few examples.

Exactly the images I was referring to ! Thanks for re-posting the link !
Just a Dragnet joke. Of course I can spell “arrogant” ! I could even sing it to the tune of “Harrigan” !
To protect the innocent !
My modus operandi is to consider myself correct, until proven wrong.
Good. Believing oneself perfect, or correct all the time, is a symptom of a delusional mind.

My dad has similar recollections of the Valencia.
Yes, that is gaudy, but I’m glad it’s so well preserved !
Thanks for the link !

OK, lost memory, thanks. It’s no big deal. I appreciate you wanting to avoid confusion between the two Imperial Theaters.
