A very enjoyable Tony show tonight, and the Hall looked great. The theater really came alive during the scene from “Hair”.
Okay—thanks for the info, Warren.
I’ll be watching that between breaks of basketball on tv.
That would be kind of cool!
If this is succesful, then they’ll do the next movie next year and the final one the year after that.
Here’s the question…will all three movies be shown back-to-back as one long concert, or will it be shown each day for three days? I hope there’s an intermission betweeen each movie so I can go take a break!!!
I just found this list and read as much as I could. I’m trying to get as much info on Ray Bohr and his performances at RCMH. It appears Denpiano and Organized among others knew him well. My Dad met Ray backstage in 1964 and they became good friends all the way until Ray’s passing in 1987. I was 11 at the time so I never got to see or hear Ray live at RCMH. But my father made several recordings of Ray in concert during 77-78. I’ve been playing them alot lately as well as going through old photos and hearing stories about Ray from other family members. I can remember during visits, he and my father would talk until very late all about organs and pipes, etc. On short, if anyone has info, pix, etc…please reply or email me privately at Thanks!
Thanks for posting the link, Warren. Sounds like an exciting event, but you’re right about another thing: Good live orchestral performances and singers don’t come cheap.
Aha!!
If this:
“Warren – yes, it’s a special digital print (IIRC) that has no music track, just dialog and effects.”
be the case, it sounds like it’ll be one fantastic evening. If it’s a real big hit, what would the chances be of something like that being done with OTHER films—notably classic films? Just curious.

Orchestra, Section 5, Row VV! Yay! The seats are way up front!!
Golly!! A live orchestral score performed to and along with the film?!? How exciting!! Keep us all posted, Gabe!!
To Warren re: “Socks Off.” I’m going. Cannot miss this. Thanks for the news! I haven’t seen a movie at the Music Hall in nearly 30 years; and with an orchestra yet!!
You’re quite welcome, ERD. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Apparently the economy has not affected the Christmas show that much. Opening day has only been pushed back about one week.
GabeDF thanks for letting us know about the filmed segment of Lanny Ross. It was very enjoyable
Because it looks so modern (and so well kept) many people tend to lose perspective on the age of the Music Hall. It is not a spring chicken and that makes it all the more wonderful and valuable.
A short Radio Program from WEAF (NBC) New York—early 1930s:

The Music Hall was either under construction or was brand new when this was broadcast and filmed; and the RCA connection is neat.
OK, I wasn’t sure about that. Thanks.
No, actually that was the Center in that ad.
Ah. okay. Thanks for the info, ken mc.
They are referring to the well-known Roxy in the ad, I assume.
Thanks for the ad, ken mc. It’s cool.
Here is a March 1933 ad from the New York Times:

RCMH is still a neat place to see movies, concerts, etc.
The last days of the Music Hall as movie theatre — before any renovations. The room was almost bleak then. At that time, it looked its age; but WHAT a place to see a movie!!! The chosen musical pieces are very appropriate the Music Hall in the late 1970s. Most people were certain the Music Hall was utterly doomed then. We saved it.
Nice performance here, in the auditorium:

Today, its 1932 “gee whiz”, “oo, ah, oh” aspect is back again. Thank goodness.
