Those photo’s of my old moviehouse brought tears to my eye’s. I remeber that moviehouse as it was BEAUTIFUL. IT IS A CRYING SHAME THAT SOMEONE LET THAT MOVIEHOUSE FALL INTO SUCH DIS-REPAIR. Anyone from Williamsburgh who see’s these pictures will surly be upset. We remember the old days when first run movies were seen there. All I can say is goodbye to a great place to see a first run show. Anniegirl
Dear Lost,
According to my oldest and dearest friend who lives on Hewes Street, she claims the Jewish People who own the Moviehouse is probably making a School or a Synagogue. She says they are buying all of the properties in the neighborhood. The Hispanic Community wanted to buy the old place but, could not afford the price of 3 Million. The Hispanic community wanted to preserve it into a Museum for the Arts and Humanities but to no avail. Too Bad. But thanks for the memories “Commodore” we sure had fun in the days of old. (1953-1970)Anniegirl
Dear Bob and Lost Memory, I can’t beleive they are tearing down this beautiful showplace. I wonder if the Hassidic Jews sold the place and the new owner is turning it into something or the owners are building a synagogue or school. I guess we will find out soon enough.Anniegirl
My e-mail is Thanks Robert. Go on the Republic Theater and copy Warren’s Photobucket pic. It’s great. Do you remember the R & F on Grand Street Ext. and Keap Street? Anniegirl
Dear Brooklyn Jim Hi Anniegirl here my e-mail address is Give me a holla and I will write you back. I jst taped North to Alaska with John Wayne and Stewart Granger and of coarse Fabian and others such as Ernie Kovaks and Cappucine. Anniegirl
Dear Warren. Anniegirl here your i8 photobucket is not available now. and neither is the R&f (republic theater) sad to say. I will look for more of your listings. Thanks Anniegirl
Dear BrooklynJim. Sorry your on the other ocean. How is it out there? I posted some things on the Met Site so go to it. I went to the site red dot maps of Coney Island. The coaster ride in the movie the Beast looks like the Thunderbolt, bit it was probably some Coaster ride out West Ha Ha. Don’t you just miss old Brooklyn. Thank God for CT so we can reminisce. Or maybe the Park Theater in Rockaway was to scare us kids to think that the Beast was goimg to go to Rockaway’s Playland Coaster ride that night and we would think it would appear in the Rockaway’s and destroy the Coaster. Could Be???????? Anyway take care and hope to hear from you soon.Anniegirl
Dear Bway, Thanks for the pic of the old Met. Can you name the store that is next to Nedick’s to your left. and the store next to that. Crawford was a men’s clothes store then Nedick’s. But I can’t make out the next two stores and I am interested in recalling. My Aunt can’t remember so I need some help. Thanks Anniegirl
Yes Sir Brooklyn Jim, Growing up in Brroklyn was great. To me as a kid Cino’s was a upscale pizza place for me. As a kid it was eating in a high class resturant instead of a pizza place. the Clinton Hill apt’s were upscale and yes they did look like projects. My Aunt lived on one of the High Floors and going in the elevator was scary. How do you like Bway pic of the old Met. Was a scene, Crawford mens clothing store and Nedicks. I never liked their Hot Dogs but I loved their Orange Drinks… My dad used to take me to Fort Green Park and I would always sit by the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. It seemed you can see the Navy Yard from that point. My children were born in Brooklyn Hospital in 1978 and 1989 (my change of life baby) HA. She is 16 going on 25 now. She loves all of my Brooklyn Memories. She is going to write a essay on Brooklyn, with my help. When my oldest Daughter got Married, I created a book of Brookly Memories for my elder relatives and they looked at them at the Wedding. It truly was a walk down memory lane for them. Talk to you soon.Anniegirl
Warren great research I love it. I was almost 2 years old. Iam sure my Parents, Aunts and Uncles went to the Met to see the Movie. Thanks for the billing. Anniegirl
Dear BrooklynJim. Do you remember the State Theater on DeKalb and Franklin Avenues? I went several times with my Dad to that moviehouse. I remember the red oriental rug that was placed on the staircase from the restrooms to the bottom of the stairs. That moviehouse showed first run movies. There was a record store on the same side of the street that faced Franklin Ave and three steps up to the store. I bought Elvis Presley 45’s 78 here I vaguely remember the Peerless moviehouse. My Aunt lived on South Portland Ave in Ft Green and my other Aunt lived on Clinton Ave and Myrtle Ave in the Clinton Houses. We used to go to Cino’s Resturant to eat Pizza. it was on DeKalb Ave. Had great fun as a kid growing up in Brooklyn. Anniegirl
I found it thanks Brooklyn Jim. My dad’s name was Jim great guy. What part of brooklyn were or are you from. Iam from Williamsburgh Originally, now I live on Long Island with my Husband Lou and our 2 children. Anniegirl
Dear Brooklyn Jim, sorry about the arithmetic. 20,000 fathoms is correct. I even have the DVD now and I watch it from time to time. It’s not scary anymore. I loved living my summers down in Rockaway Beach. Us kids even became junior lifeguards. Jack and Pete were the lifeguards on Beach 101 street in 1952 and 1953.. We tied towels around our necks and made like superman flying. We even sat in the lifeguard boat and sat in the lifeguard chair after 6 P.M. when they went home. The Park theater was the place to go on Saturday Afternoon. It was a small house but big to us kids. As far as the movie the beast was seen at Manhattan Beach I guess he it the Roller Coaster at coney Island. The roller coaster looked likt the Thunderbolt right?. Talk to you soon about more Rockaway Memories. Anniegirl.
Dear Warren,
I think your poster of 1936 is great. Although I was not born until 1945, I enjoy your research on the Movie Circut. My older Sister went to the Met to see Gone with the Wind with my Mom. I was not interested to see that particular Movie since I was just a kid. So my Mom took me, my sister and my Dad to Schraffts for Dinner which was next door to the moviehouse. Keep up the good work Warren. Anniegirl.
As a kid, we had a bungalow on Beach 101 Street and we went to see “The Beast from 100,000 fathoms. I was 7 years old and was scared out of my wits. My older sister took me and my cousins to that movie theater. I do not remember any other moviehouse near that one. We had the summer place on Beach 101 street and we did not venture past the police precient on Beach 96th Street anniegirl
Dear Astyanax, I went only twice to that Movie theater with my Aunt. It was a rather small moviehouse in the 50’s. I lived on Penn Street in Williamsburgh. We usually went to the Commodore or the Republic. But next to the entrance to the movie was a Rexall Drug Store on the right of the moviehouse and the YMCA was right across the street. Then later on the moviehouse did run Spanish Movies. Sad to say they are all gone, but not in our memory banks anniegirl
