Suit Names Theater In Attack Case
FREMONTâ€"A $31,000 damage suit has been filed against the Center Theater in Fremont after employees of the establishment allegedly beat up a 15-year-old Newark boy. The complaint, filed last week by Roger Maddox, of 35637 Burdick St., Newark, names the movie theater, the Centerville Amusement Co., Inc., three John Does and two unknown companions.
The incident happened May 21, and, according to attorney Edward Newman who filed the complaint, the boy was dragged into the cashier’s booth and beat up for no apparent reason, suffering two broken teeth. The theater is at 37411 Fremont Blvd., Fremont.
The complaint asks $10,000 for the assault, the same amount for the battery and for exemplary damages. A thousand dollars is asked for wrongful detention and an unspecified amount in medical costs.
On 3/8/36, the feature at the Fulton was “Star of Midnight”, with William Powell and Ginger Rogers. Admission was 20 cents. Other theaters advertised were the State, Kinema, Warner Brothers, Fox Wilson and Hardy’s. The Wilson was showing a film starring the recently born Dionne Quintuplets called “The Country Doctor”. A theater on F Street called the Rex, apparently a live performance venue, was featuring “Zorima, Queen of the Nudists”, along with fifty more “Real Lovely Nudists in Person”. I’m not sure if they meant they were real lovely or real as in not artificial.
Was the proposed theater in the 400 block of Salina Street ever built? I keep reading articles about the plans in 1967, but nothing about the actual opening of the theater.
I have an article from 1963 concerning the demolition of the Rio Theater in Appleton, built 1929. Any chance this is listed on the Wisconsin page under another name? If not, I will add it.
The author of this page refers to the abandoned Warner theater on Federal Street, but CT shows that as now renovated. I think he meant the State. There is a picture at the top of the page that looks ike a theater: http://tinyurl.com/y5utj4
Here is an article from the Oakland Tribune dated 2/9/76:
REBIRTH OF THE RIO THEATER
Two young men with unbridled optimism and a fondness for fantasy
plan to reopen the Rio theater here, probably on Friday night. But the Rio, closed for more than three years, will not be just a movie
house, according to Peter Van Kleef and Steve Levine. It also will present live entertainment, lectures and educational programs.
Van Kleef also wants to hold music programs at the 430 seat Rio “because it’s the ideal situation for small concerts”. The Rio has been closed since December 1972, when its last operator died.
The theater was built and opened in 1940 and flourished through World War II and into the 1950s before the advent of Interstate 80. There is no movie theater in west Contra Costa north of El Sobrante, Levine noted. He believes the Rio’s variety of offerings will attract people from as far away as Vallejo. Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill.

I have an ad for the El Rio Theater in Santa Fe, circa 1952. Any recollection of this by NM locals? More info would be helpful.

Yeah, the old Test theater is not what it used to be. Must be that ABC Theatre corporation – they always screw things up.

I recommend viewing Don’s slide show – many interesting shots of old venues.
Cerberus was a mythological three-headed dog. Appropriate for a triplex, I suppose.
Maybe we should start a website called parkinglottreasures.com.
