Mark in NC: I’ve been to Gastonia to see friends and will be returning this winter to check out the former Webb lobby photos and one of the old projectors on display. Hope it is all still there!
After looking at a post with photo of the marquee it the shows the name “Don Gibson”. I think I recall reading that he was or is a country western singer who lives or used to live in Shelby so he may be a hometown boy who decided to purchase this theatre and put his name on it. Would rather see the name Rogers returned though. I wonder what he has done to the interior. If anything, hope he has kept it original as I’m sure the interior is art deco, too!
Lost: Your Feb. 24, 2007 post asks if the Rogers is haunted? I tried the link with no luck and it is Halloween season so we need to be able to read this haunted story! Boo!
I’m sure the interior is unique with the auditorium being the former sanctuary and the stage being where the screen is now. I wonder if the owner put in theatre seats or if patrons sit in pews?
LOL! I knew you’d come through for me! Not sure if I like the look of this marquee awkwardly placed on this former church. One can certainly tell that it had been a church. Don’t recall “church to cinema”. If at all, it’s the other way around…..“cinema to church”. I wonder how many Galeton residents are happy with this conversion?
Lost: Since I didn’t get to Galeton PA when I was in Coudersport I didn’t get to see the Lakeview Cinema. I tried to see it through your above post, but no luck….help!
I recently attended a fun comedy play entitled “The Queen of Bingo” at this theatre. The audience even got the opportunity to play a game of Bingo and the winner won a 10# frozen turkey! BTW, the winner was not “Yours Truly”!
Mark: This is difficult to read and I hope that somehow the Carolina Theatre has a future in Charlotte, but with the troubled economy one can only wonder what will happen to the Carolina.
During my tour I saw and sat in one of the theatre seats, but also saw and sat in one of the original seats that were much more ornate on the sides. It was in the basement and, I believe, is the only one. I suggested to our tour guide, David that perhaps they put it on display, but the lobby area isn’t big enough.
Opus: Interesting to read about the Wurlitzer organ that was once in the Hollywood. Though very disturbing to read that the organ was offered back to the theatre by the owner’s widow and they declined! Also interesting to note in my research that the seats have all been saved and are being restored by inmates.
My recent trip to Coudersport was a pleasant experience having met friends for lunch and meeting new friends at the Potter County Historical Society, Kay and Leon Reed. Leon graduated from high school with CT member, Edith Wingate. Leon took us on a 45 minute tour of the town which included seeing the Scottish Rite Consistory, Lewis Mansion, Old Hickory, Dr. Othmers former summer home and other interesting sites. At 2:00 we were greeted by the manager of the theatre and taken on a full tour of that lovely theatre. Thank you David and thank M/M Reed.
The one photo shows a vertical marquee with the words…PALACE and another one doesn’t seem to show the vertical marquee though hard to see as they are not “up close and personal” photos! Hopefully my email will bring about some better photos of the Palace!
Lost……Thanks so much! I think I found 2 photos on that site of the theatre, but have sent an email to find out if the site could post some close-up theatre photos along with interior photos!

Lost: What more can you tell us about Shelby’s other theatres…the State, the Webb and the Carolina? Are they listed on CT now?

I plan to be in Shelby NC this winter and will report back here as to the renovation stage of this art deco theatre.

I had heard it had been a church prior to finding this link. I hope that Darren Jones who added this theatre posts here again and tells us more.

It seems this Opera House was the only one that Enoch A. Curtis built.

This theatre doesn’t have the Marr & Colton organ today nor does it have any organ after its renovation.
Thanks. I have visited this theatre, but had forgotten the EBERSON connection!

I just checked out an exterior photo and like the “It’s Time” on the marquee between the word MILLER. Clever!
I hope to see one of Roy Benjamin’s theatres this winter, the Marion in Ocala FL.

This Wurlitzer site shows Opus 566 in the Heavens Theatre so believe it should read Havens.

ken mc: The 1929 ad posted on October 23, 2006 doesn’t work and I would like to see it. Thanks.
