but the million dollar question is which auditorium it is – if it’s not one of the largest screens – AMC is truly truly stupid.

Apparently, the IMAX (Digital MPX) auditorium will be opened to the public on March 5 with the release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
Preview screenings of “Under The Sea 3D” are reported to occur this week.

well yes it was on the first floor with an entrance direct to the outside. Now to explain where it was – if you were to be standing in the open air parking lot that was inbetween the mall and the Circuit City (which is no longer there) the theatres were right there, it’s now a Thai restaurant (or has been) the long hall way that was close to Lords and Taylors.

I’m sorry, I don’t mean to post three posts in a row. I guess my other question is, if it was in the tysons corner mall, then what part of the mall was I thinking of? What do they have there now?

I don’t think fairfax mall had a movie theatre then, I don’t remember. We prob wouldn’t have driven that way since we were coming from Sterling, va. I was looking on this site and did see some other tysons mall (Forget the name now) so I’m wondering if that’s it.

I’m trying to remember something. I remember in the early 90’s when I was a kid, I went with my dad to see Aladden. We were at the mall, and I remember walking down a very long hall that connected the mall to the theatre. (Well, probably long for a kid) and there were posters on the wall I think cause I remember seeing a Toy story poster a few years later at a b-day party after seeing the Big Green) Anyways, it seemed like it was one floor. I went back to this theatre and mall about two years ago and it looked completely different and new. I’m wondering if I’m remembering the same place. cause I dont

Actually I’m really glad they aren’t going to be installing Imax at Tyson’s Corner. It’s not real Imax, isn’t much if any better than what they already have, and would cost more. I’ve been wondering if the upcoming 4k Sony projectors will even end up looking better than the Imax 2K system; haven’t been able to compare yet so I don’t know, but the thought of paying more for a 2K system when 4K is next door on the same size screen with equally good sound just doesn’t make sense.

Actually, I’m in no hurry to have digital projection installed at Tyson’s as there’s really not much benefit over the current 35mm film systems they have.

yes, 6 and 12 have 3D Digital Projection – I was never a fan of 6 because one, with 3D films the light output is on the dark side – Gallery Place’s DLP system has the best brightest output of light and the surround sound is alot punchier and dynamic. However Hot Ticket’s presentation of ‘Rent: On Broadway’ and ‘Cirque Du Soleil’ on auditorium 6’s system was very impressive – I’ll more than likely try to see the HiDef presentation of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ there instead of Mazza Gallerie (which is closer, well … walking distance from my house) – since their digital projection system is neither DLP or Sony LCoS (if tix are still available). From what the lady at AMC told me on the phone this morning her impression of the new system is that it’s superior to the older system – I’ll personally give my two cents after I see ‘Final Destination 3D tomorrow morning. As I mentioned before, a 3D system would have been most ideal and amazing on the massive Screen 3 – Sony’s systems are meant to be installed on the largest screens possible – oh well, AMC should have realized that after reniging and deciding not to install a IMAX-lite screen at Tysons, Screen 3 should have been the obvious second screen to get a digital 3D projection unit – alas that would have been asking too much from them…

Then I take it there are two DP auditoriums; 6 and 12? 6 wasn’t that big of an auditorium and the sound was ho hum. Its not worth the drive for me unless they are consistent or I have business in that part of town.

A new Sony 4K 3D system debuted on screen 12

Giles
Giles on July 20, 2009 at 6:34 am

oh well their loss, I expect them to install a Sony 4K 3D system on Screen 3 then to compensate for the promised IMAX screen – something that’d Regal would do at a heartbeat, but AMC corporate is being slow on the uptake on digital conversion.

Looks like this theatre will not be getting the IMAX Digital conversion. According to AMC’s IMAX page, this theatre is no longer listed under the Coming Soon tab.

I had cousins that lived in McLean in the 1960s. I recall them taking us over to the mall site that was under construction in the late sixties.

The entire Tyson’s Corner expansion, including the AMC cinema, was designed by the architectural firm RTKL Associates.

This theater would actually be a good location for an IMAX conversion due to the size of its largest auditoriums, especially compared to the auditorium sizes of current IMAX Digital installs.

while I was there for a Saturday screening of ‘Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past’ I enquired about the IMAX-Digital screen – well I got an even more vague answer as if to suggest the installation plan is now dead in the water.

I’m sorry I’m a broken record regarding this topic, but everytime I read some new news blurb about AMC and it’s scatterbrained plans on digital conversion of it’s theatres, it always doesn’t include Tysons or really any of the other DC/VA/Maryland theatres in it’s chain.

“According to the LF Examiner website (LF=Large Format), Rockaway 16 is now scheduled for a flat screen IMAX 3D system for June 30, 2009. We’re listed as a future theater which may not open on time or at all. Here we go again! Check it out…

Rockaway 16 is listed under NY, not NJ.

well, according to ‘that’ list Tyson’s should have it’s IMAX-Digital up and running by now… there’s no reason why AMC hasn’t made it mind up or not if Tysons is getting such a system. I’m really livid at AMC for not making a definitive decision on this matter. They are losing my money considering I’ve been running over to Hoffman everytime a movie debuts on their IMAX-Digital screen.

the now speculated IMAX-Digital installation date is a vague: ‘sometime in the Summer’

Giles
Giles on March 3, 2009 at 11:11 am

nope, another IMAX (Digital) film to not be presented as such (‘Watchmen’), this is ridiculous. Wow – unreal, what a loss, they aren’t getting my money cause I’ll be trekking over to Hoffman instead. We may be in a recession at the moment and an IMAX-Digital installation might not be high priority at the moment for AMC, but this dragging out of a promised screen seems like a broken promise.

strike two: the IMAX screen wont be up for ‘The Day Earth Stood Still’ I really wonder what the hold up is, because any sort of confirmation on when or if Tysons will be outfitted to IMAX seems to be in debate.

Giles
Giles on October 29, 2008 at 12:59 pm

strange, I checked AMC’s website today and it doesn’t look like the IMAX screen will open for Madgascar 2 – it’s simply denoted as “TBD” I would assume it will be up and running for ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’

is the scheduled November 7th conversion/opening of the IMAX screen still happening? As of the 10th of October, nothing was happening. It must not take that long to convert a theatre to IMAX specs. I would have thought they were aiming for the ‘Madagascar 2’ opening but according to AMC website, only the DLP screening is posted

when I saw ‘Ghost Town’ which had moved to Screen 4 – I thought the picture seemed a tad soft – the 5.1 soundmix wasn’t all that showy to begin with so, I didn’t think much of it. I on the other hand enjoyed the film more than you. How big is screen 1? Does it seem worth it, that is, to convert to IMAX? The IMAX banner as of last Friday was gone.

My friend and I saw “Ghost Town” in number 1. It was a schnoozer of a movie. Sightlines, picture and sound were quite good. I had thought 1 was the largest but it seems 3 and 9 are since there is a stairway to those two as you enter into the complex. I hope to catch a movie one of the larger ones soon. I did sneak in to see how big #3 was since it was showing ‘Igor’ and yes, its quite large.
