What about the old 2-3? And the one behind RO West. Was this demolished?

Actually Cinemark those two were originally 5 & 6. Back before the mall was enclosed and the other six were built 5 & 6 were those. 7&8 were on the backside of RO West. Then those to were re-numbered 7&8 when River Oaks had fourteen theaters.

I do believe those could seat 400. Those were the smallest back in the days.
The first movie I ever saw in 7-8 was a sneak preview of “Starman.” Now of course it was sneaking in NW Indiana but I HAD to get a look at the new theaters and my dad was a good enough sport to go with me. It was a nice but not spectacular theater plus the movie was terrific. I did see many a movie there too.
If you think Voight was bad in that, wait ‘til you see him in the crapsterpiece, “Karate Dog”, in which he yells out with MISconviction, “Get that dog!”.
Most Wanted. I remember seeing that one on DVD. It rivals Armageddon in terms of stupidity and it’s one of many embarrassing performances for Jon Voight.
Yes, they were attached to the mall. Photo here. Interesting note, before 7-8, it was a Jewel Foods store from the mall’s opening. Theaters 7-8 & McDonalds went in the Jewel space in ‘83. And thanks JRS40, I had a feeling the capacites might be close to 400. I always remembered them being big, but not like 11-12, or even the larger screens in the mall.
PS: I saw “Most Wanted”, “Art of War”, and “The Score” at 7-8. Funny story, when my parents went to see the 10:15pm showing of “What Lies Beneath” there, some women started arguing/cursing, and one of them said to the other “I’ll cut ‘your a$$ and no one will be watching this movie!”. Thankfully, management had police to take them out.
Cinemark I am only going by memory here. 7-8 were the ones on the same side as 1-2 right? The ones attached to the mall itself? If I remember they were smaller then 2-3 and 5-6. I would guess they seated around 400 each but don’t hold me to it.

Cinemark I could’ve sworn a Tinseltown or some other big theater chained moved in or around the area. Maybe it wasn’t in South Holland. I still can’t understand why both River Run and then River Oaks closed. Hard to believe the Indiana theaters put both of them out considering it so much farther to drive too.
I’m sure 1-6 may have had some DLP, but my grandfather was pretty much the 9-10 guy until he retired in 2000.
Typically you would run print synced to the DLP projectors. Movies in digital play from a hard drive typically known as a Q-bit. The reason you would run print is because if the hard drive locked up it would automatically switch over to print. I for one still prefer print. #9 had DLP, my grandfather remembered running only a few films on it. The rental price for a digital copy was more in cost than print at that time. I remember when my grandfather first loaded up that thing the upload into the hard drive took forever depending on how long the movie was. Then once loaded you had to run the whole thing in its entirety to check for any digital crap like jumping, freezing, and to sync the print to it.
Management is part of the blame but most of it came from Cineplex Odeon. Even my grandfather admitted Cineplex was a bad company. They were cheap when came to labor hours. Just before Cineplex took over every theater had one projectionist (back when it was Plitt). Then when Cineplex took over they cut the number down to one man to each complex. one projectionist per two theaters. Then they went even cheaper and decided two projectionists would be enough on a eight hour shift. My grandfathers night went like this. Report to 9-10, turn on projectors, audio system, etc. then hop in car and go to 11-12 and to the same thing, The other guy covered 1-6, and 7-8. Take a little break, start movies in 9-10 then go to 11-12 start those. God forbid if you had 70MM. This would take longer because after the trailers played, you would the projector and change out then flat lens to scope. If movies had conflicting times then it was up to theater manager to start the movie. Which is a union no-no. Fortunately this way of working only lasted a short time, then Cineplex decided to back to stationing one projectionist per complex ( 1 for 1-6, 1 for 7-8, 1 for 9-10, and 1 for 11-12).
So you can see why Cineplex was bad. Remember the concession stands at 9-10. their was a point in time they stopped opening the one in front of old #4.
Good thing is Cineplex is no more in the states. They went back to Canada under a new name Cineplex Galaxy. AMC bought out the remaining Cineplex theaters and all of the Loews theaters in America. Unfortunately is was a little too late. I think AMC would’ve opened 9-10 along with the ones in the mall. But they closed when it was Loews-Cineplex.
Perhaps it was to attract the urban crowd. But still, Flightplan was a bad film and I don’t understand how it did so well at the box office.
Meanwhile, what is your opinion on DLP and REAL-D? I believe that REAL-D is useful to attracting audiences to see certain films and they usually draw better than the 2-D versions of films. Plus, many theatres are able to play both film and digital sources so you can continue to play film but also alternate with digital in certain situations (such as REAL-D).

I don’t think there’s ever been a theater in South Holland. I know that the Kerasotes Showplace 16 in nearby Schererville, IN took a bite out of RO when it opened in ‘96. Anyway, even with the ones in the mall, it still did great business. I think that the problem was management. The upkeep began to get bad, and the slection of movies went down (mainly in 9-10). I mean, who books “Roll Bounce” (good movie though) in 9-10 over “Flightplan”?
BTW, River Run showed “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and “Lethal Weapon 2” in 70MM.
Hey Cinemark. Didn’t Tinseltown open a complex in South Holland back in the mid-nineties? I seem to remember one opening around that old truck stop (maybe it wasn’t there). Yes River Run had a little affect on River Oaks. I thought kinda dumb to open those so close. But River Oaks had the advantage. You couldn’t show 70MM at River Run or listen to it in THX. And I seem to remember River Run closed before the remainder River Oaks did. I think River Oaks would’ve survived if it weren’t for those six they opened in the mall. There wasn’t a need for them. The original eight would’ve been enough even for today. Or if your gonna at least add to an existing complex. Lets see here when Cineplex Odeon took over they opened 1-6 in the mall, 7-8 by Field’s, 9-10 the original’s, 11-12 R.O West, 13-14 original 2/3. River Run had 8. That’s way too many theaters in one area even grandpa agreed.
The bathroom’s were small in 1-4. But mind you the original theatre was opened in the late sixties. People were much smaller back then (not trying to sound rude, but we’re all pretty big these days). And there wasn’t really a need for big bathrooms. There’s more kids going now then before. My grandfather told me when the theatre opened it was more couples then anything.

Audiodude, when you say ‘Tinseltown complex in South Holland’, are you refering to the River Run (built & opened by M&R in ‘88) up the street in Lansing? Of course, it’s now called the Lansing Cinema 8.
Anyway, the last time I was in #9 was back in June 2004 to see “Chronicles of Riddick”. And the auditorium while big, was in bad shape. I nearly slipped while walking along the isles. And this was because of uncleaned popcorn butter. And most of the seats were so dirty that it made the blue look nearly black. Today, the windows and doors are all boarded up. So I can kinda tell that the insides ain’t pretty. This may be a rough estimate, but to get that building back to all it’s splendor, I might be looking at 2.5 to 3 million. I want the redo to look like these places

Back when I was going there, my only complaint was that the restrooms were too small. That’s what I also aim to fix. Seating may be reduced to 880-900 in #9, and about 700 in #10 to create expanded concessions and restrooms. It will be complicated, but I think it can happen.
Right now I’m trying to build up discrestionary funds, because I’ve heard that most financial investors will want a show of faith or something to that effect.
I like the idea of a John Hughes film festival. And nice list of movies there. I don’t know I would’ve been able to book all of them, due to the Lansing down the street.

I guess I was wrong with that year. It’s been way too long since I went to those theatres. Either way Cineplex Odeon can be blammed for that.
Screens 2 and 3 closed in 1989 and not 1996 as posted above. I went to see “Breaking In” with Burt Reynolds there and a week later the place was closed. I was stunned. They were beautiful theaters though smaller then #1 and #4.
Correction from my grandfather’s memory. Original theatre #1 and Original #2 were both equipped for 70MM. Later on one of the new theatres in the mall was equipped for 70MM as well. Grandpa rarely dealt with the six in the mall.
