I can’t imagine a more painful experience than seeing your favorite movie distorted on the Dome’s screen. I remember seeing Lawrence of Arabia in there and it was like viewing the desert through a fishbowl.
How different was the interior in the 70s and 80s in comparison to the 90s? The stage and proscenium collumns were removed decades before if I’m not mistaken. The exterior is certainly better but they should’ve put back the palm trees and fixed the fountain on the east side. Whenever I’m there it’s not working.
Were there ever little bonzai trees in the theater or is this a false memory?
I would think a rock concert with a long set would be far more damaging than a few minutes of the loudest trailers. Of course it’s a real problem for film mixers and jobs of that kind but I don’t think the audience is in any real danger unless the sound system is louder than it should be.
“…the loud but tonal varied and superb THX Sound trailer, the equally loud DLP and Qualcomm trailers…”
Actually, that Techicolor Digital trailer has been pulled or is being fazed out. It’s powered by Thomson now and the trailer is pretty weak.
I’ve actually had the opposite experience: soft trailers and soft main feature. Mostly going to Grauman’s, Mann Village, El Capitan, and Arclight is probably the reason. Grauman’s and the Village use to really crank it though.
Wow, the management sounds like a bunch of inept idiots. Good riddance. I’m sad that this theater is going though. I remember seeing many movies in the main auditorium: MIB, Mars Attacks, The Rock, Star Wars SE, Twister, Batman Forever, Nightmare Before Christmas, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Dark City…
I guess I’ll just have to visit the Alex myself someday. The pictures available online show a pretty ornate theater with a balcony and a big stage. Not really a movie house though.
I wonder when the blade marquee burned out or was it just not turned on to save electricty.
Until the projection angle is fixed I can’t imagine sitting thru any 35mm, 70mm, 2k, 4k, film in the Dome. Just no.
How good can Digibeta look on a theater-sized screen? I would’ve asked for my money back but it sounds like it was passable.

There’s lobby shots at http://www.graumanschinesetheater.net

LorenzoRodriguez = Lorenzo Rodriguez? ;–)
How about banner ads?
Could someone name the trailers they think were loud? Just curious.
Exactly. I say play everything at the intended level. Let the trailers be loud if that’s how they were mixed.

What a waste. Way to go, Pasadena.
I’ve never seen a tour go thru the auditorium during a show. That must be a day time thing.
Did the Chinese Theater ever close during the refurb? It must have since all the seats were replaced.
Any updates on this theater? Drove by it the other day and the front is still covered up. What’s the state of the interior?
The thing is that they did use to have all the movies listed on the marquee, with the one playing in the big theater using bigger letters.
What’s the reason for not putting the showtimes on the marquee? It doesn’t seem like Pacific wanted this place to succeed, does it?
Thank you for the pictures. I spent way too much time at this place.
An AMC Grauman’s Chinese? Oh god, no.
I agree but what kind of showmanship?
Robins is the name. Stil open.
Are all the screens common width? What a waste.
A good street level view can be seen near the begining of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie.

Wow, there was no riff raff back then.
