They probably did but in the shots where he’s hanging from the clock it was a set on top of a building next to the Orpheum, I believe. There’s a good documentary about the ‘making of’ Safety Last on this set:
What most people don’t realize is that its an optical illusion. The building he’s hanging from is a set on top of a building on the east side of the street. They set up the camera perfectly to give the illusion that he’s very high up on the west side of the street.
Does the Stadium have its own page? I’ll have to check. I think you should put as many photos as you can for people to see. It’s nice to see some photos that everyone hasn’t already seen from the library and usc’s website.
I can see the BofA in the last photo….great. I don’t know if putting a picture on here is a no-no or not, I just didn’t think it was possible since they disabled the add photo thing so long ago. You must know some fancy html or something.
wow….thanks for posting those! so was the BofA right against the real estate place in the photo? how in the heck did you put a photo on cinema treasures in the actual posting?
I would love to see a photo of any of these theaters. The only photo I had seen of the Lido was on haineshisway’s book until that other book came out and had another photo.
can you tell me which corner the Pickfair was located? I’ve looked at the Sanborn maps and Pico & Fairfax used to not go smoothly through. It looks like you used to have to stop and then jog over to continue on Fairfax. Now it has been changed to curve so it is continuous. I don’t know if it was where Von’s is now or across the street on the southwest corner.
My neighborhood was the first or one of the first HPOZ’s and they are very touchy about anything new. Frankly, I don’t see Trader Joe’s as bringing a bad element to any neighborhood.

THEATER SAFE ROBBED
V.J. Rosen, manager of Bard’s Theater at 4473 Sunset Boulevard, reported to police yesterday that yeggs had forced the small safe in the office of the theater and had obtained $100.

A thief, especially a burglar or safecracker.
I’ve notice lately that all of the little vendor’s on the side of the Tower are gone or never open. Maybe they kicked everyone out. Also, the graffiti has been removed.

I sat in the seats last weekend and they are very comfortable and new feeling. I’m sure they replaced the original seats with these at some point and put fewer than original to accommodate the continuously expanding exteriors of the American public. They did a really nice job because the sides of the seats look original, at least on the aisle.
Here’s an article about the opening of this theater from the LA Times:
(Feb. 24, 1929)
DANCE HALL NEARS COMPLETION
Grand Opening of Amusement Center Set for June 1
AVALON (Catalina Island) Feb. 23.-The $1,000,000 theater and dance palace under construction by William Wrigley, Jr., scheduled to open June 1, has so increased in cost that it now has passed the $2,000,000 mark. Steam shovels this week are making the immense building visible from the sea by leveling a cliff which now hides it. The granite composing the cliff is being hauled out to a submerged reef several hundred yards distant.
The Catalina theater building is of circular typed of enormous size. A total of 10,000 sacks of cement was required for the concrete work; 1500 tons of structural steel for 28,222 separate pieces for braces; 422 tons of reinforcing steel and 25,000 yards of sand and rock for the foundations. The roof requires 105,000 Catalina red curved tile.
The theater auditorium, on the main floor, is 115 feet in diameter. The full dome ceiling is forty-five feet high and the theater will seat 2500 persons.
The ballroom on the floor above is said to be the largest in America. It is 18,000 square feet in area and large enough to accommodate 5000 persons. The floor is laid on floating cork and felt. There are o supporting pillars on either the dance floor or theater auditorium, for the building is braced horizontally and vertically, involving new engineering principles. An indirect lighting system will be used.
Gabriel Beckman, mural artist, is in charge of decorating nine panels depicting a sequence of submarine scenes.
Webber & Spaulding, Los Angeles architects, designed the building. Tom White, lessee, will operate the theater. He has charge of the opening, June. 1.

Well worth the money…by the way.
Hey ken….there’s a much more clear and detailed shot of the same scene here:

By 1984 there are advertisements for India’s Oven restaurant there and then in 1985 it changes to Albee’s Discount Appliances.
The last movie listing I can find is from June 12, 1980 so far:
PICFAIR, 5879 W. Pico-939-5212
Super Classic Hit-“Mere Mehboob”
Thanks…I was spelling it wrong.
could you show me the link?
Does anyone know if the Pickfair has a page on here? I put it in as the name and also previous name but can’t seem to find it.
I hope that they are being digitally archived if they are originals. Too many bad things can happen to old photos.
Great detective work!

Thanks Don…I might have to watch that just for the scene. I read that Dick Sargeant is in that movie…wasn’t that Darren from Bewitched?
We also had a tour of the Belasco last night. Here are some photos of that theater….mostly details and again, very dark inside:

My HTC meeting was held in the Mayan last night…here are some photos. Some are not very good since it was very dark in there:
