I think this will be great that the building will be renovated, or at least used. Sure, it’s unfortunate that it won’t be a theater anymore….but this is a lot better than conversion into retail….and certainly better than an abandoned building slowly falling apart for two decades.
Jim, yes, the Ridgewood would be quite diffent if you haven’t been in the Ridgewood since it was one screen.
Peter, you have me beat by a year….I was last in it when I saw Problem Child (John Ritter), which I think was August 1991 (or was it August 1990)? Anyway, that was the last movie I saw there, and I believe it was in one of the balcony theaters. I had previously thought the last movie I saw there was Friday the 13th Part 6, but I think that was out before Problem Child, so Friday the 13th part 6, must have been the second to last movie I saw there. I do remember that I saw Friday the 13th Part 6 in the right balcony theater (if facing the stage), as I sat in the first row above the stairway, as I remember resting my feet on the old railing over the stairway, which had large balistrades.
I think I saw Problem Child in the Middle Balcony Theater.
Tim, that’s strange, because when I click that link, it brings you right to the Pacific/Warner building.
Strange, that link should bring you directly there.
In the enter city box, try typing: “6433 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA” (not Hollywood, as that always brings me to Hollywood Florida, even if I put “CA”.
Good work! I remember when the “Eagle” Theater came up a few years ago….I forgot all about it though. I vaguely remember a conversation in some theater section about the “Eagle”, and some thought it may be the Chopin because of the Eagle on top, but then you found the Midway and added it….
I posted the photo on the Midway’s page.
Lost, my first guess was the Meserole too….but the Meserole’s entrance is in the middle of the block, this theater is near the corner. It’s on the wrong side of the street for the Chopin. I also think this theater (in the mystery photo) is much further up on Manhattan Ave, but I could be wrong. Eagle St is almost by the Newtown Creek! The Meserole is over by Meserole Ave.
Could this be a theater that isn’t listed on the site yet?
I think it is a national chain, as I have seen Rainbow in different locations.
I don’t know if they are responsible for the demolition of the theater. Actually, I don’t know when the Greenpoint was torn down (unless I missed that fact above). The Greenpoint had a typical theater layout, with the lobby area in line with all the stores, in a sort of seperate building, and the theater auditorium spread out behind the stores. This same sort of layout is like the Ridgewood, Madison, Rainbow Theater, Meserole, and so many others. The Rainbow shop holds not only the lot where the lobby was, but also the lot in back were the old auditorium was (judging by Warren’s photo).
I also wonder why the theater was even torn down instead of just converted into a store like others were (like the Madison, Chopin, etc).
Anyone have any idea when the theater was demolished? Was it decades ago or recently?
In the meantime, here’s a photo I found on Brooklynpix of the RKO:
Here’s an aerial photo of the World, and another theater. The World is the building on the left without the marquee. I don’t know what the one with the marquee is, it also looks to be in pretty bad shape. Anyone know what the one with the marquee is?
Does anyone know which theater this theater is in this aerial photo? It’s between Ivar and Vine, one block west of the Pantages. You can see it’s triangular marquee:
Here’s an aerial view the Warner/Pacific. Notice how the theater is actually set up caddy-corner to the lot configuration, with the stage and auditorium set on a diagnal.
In the photos linked above from March 2006, it appears that for the screening room it is now, all the theater is preserved, however, they covered it up with drapperies as it’s probably not in great shape. Hopefully one day it will be restored to it’s former glory….but at least it’s being used…and is not abandoned any more.
I remember passing the Ritz when I was on Hollywood Blvd a couple weeks ago. The only difference between the photo Lost Memory posted, and currently (I didn’t take a photo) is that the “I” has since fallen off in “Ritz”….
Here’s an aerial view of the Ritz. If you scroll slightly to the right a block, you can also see the Eqyptian Theater, with it’s courtyard:
So what are the photos of the El Capitan that Robert posted from? Thnat’s of course not the Paramount, aka Disney EL Capitan across from the Chinese Theater.
I wonder if it’s just a hoax. The link I posted supports what Luis has heard too….but then again, you know how we can believe everything that’s printed on the internet….haha. Luis, where did you hear about it from? Perhaps it may be a more reliable sourse than the link I just happened to find by googling, which may be correct, but like I said….who knows….

The Parkside LIRR station closed in 1962.
Even though it’s closed again, did they make it back into one theater for the short time the screenings were held there?

Yeah, I went by there a few weeks ago, and it didn’t look all that great from the outside….needs some love.
Here’s a photo of the location of the Greenpoint Theater I took back in 2004. The Rainbow Shop shows where the old Greenpoint’s lobby once was:
