No doubt the ‘51 “Thing” is one of the all time great sci-fi films – indeed, one of the great films of any genre, benefitting as it did from the guiding hand of Howard Hawks. Having said that, I rather enjoyed the Carpenter remake. Of course, Carpenter has decent pedigree himself. I’m not sure the same can be said of the director Scott Derrickson, who is at the helm of the update of “Day the Earth Stood Still.” His credits are not very impressive – certainly not worthy of shining Robert Wise’s shoes. And Keanu Reaves as Klaatu? Don’t get me started. I don’t know. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Interesting to note that Derrickson’s next ambition is no less than a cinematic interpretation of Milton’s epic poem “Paradise Lost.” Good luck with that.

Currect Bill, Carpenters version was true to the original short story “Who Goes There”. I rn it in 70mm and hated it.

Carpenter’s version is much more faithful to the original short story, but I’ve never been able to sit through it a second time. I saw it in 70mm at the late great Rivoli on Broadway, but even that didn’t help. As for the 1951 version, I must’ve seen that about 25 times before I was 12 years old.

Carpenter also did a crummy remake of “Village of the Damned”. I hope “The Day the Earth Stood Still” doesn’t join this list of classic sci-fi movies that shouldn’t have been remade.

I know what you mean Bill, I felt the same way about the 1951 classic “The Thing Fromn Another World” which John Carpenter butcherd in a remake in the early 80s

Thanks BobT. Wasn’t looking forward to seeing that one, but maybe I’m wrong about it.

And thanks in advance, Vito. I’m going in to “Day” with no expectations at all. I’m also going to try to forget it’s a remake of one of my all-time favorite movies.

Of course we will want to see “Day The Earth Stood Still” in IMAX.
I will see it in that format soon and will report back.

I hope “The Day the Earth Stood Still ” is the Christmas attraction at the Ziegfeld. Maybe I’ll find out tomorrow.

Can anyone report on “Quantum of Solace” at the Ziegfeld? I’m going on Thursday afternoon.

By the way for the benefit of all you James Bond fans and especially you Daniel Craig fans, the Ziegfeld will have a special midnight screening of the new 22nd Bond Film, QUANTUM OF SOLACE at 12 midnight on Thursday, November 13th, 2008, the night before it’s regular scheduled release date which is Friday, November 14th. To my knowledge unless that I’m wrong, this is one of the few rare occasions that the Ziegfeld has a midnight screening of a new film. But I already got my ticket for that midnight screening and will certainly be there since the Ziegfeld is the best movie theatre to show Bond films!

anybody seen the restored Godfather I & II at the Ziegfeld this weekend? How does it look & sound? even better than the versions shown in early 2006 at the Ziegfeld? Curtain being opened?

The Ziegfeld has been a big part of this year’s New York Film Festival, which is why its listings haven’t been available in the usual places.

The Godfather movies will be screened for one week from 10/17 to 10/23 but I don’t know the schedules.

I’d rather see these epic stories on the big screen at the Ziegfeld than at Film Forum’s more —ahem — modest ones.

The same movies always why?
How about the Sand Pebbles or Khartoum or Those Magificent Men in their Flying Machines?
El Cid, The Fall of the Roman Empire, Around the World in 80 Days…
Unfortunately 70 mm musicals are a lost cause at this point.

I can’t sit through the Gone With the Wind of mafia movies.
I’ve known too many Italians in my life(being one.)
If they showed a realistic movie about them it would be unwatchable.

If you look at the Clearview site it shows that “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” opens on Oct. 24th. 2008.

Godfather 1 & 2 in new restored prints overseen by Coppola are now at the Film Foum, which makes me wonder if the Godfather films will be coming to the Ziegfeld. http://www.filmforum.org/films/godfather.html

And what IS showing at the Ziegfeld now?

The Ziegfeld is completely AWOL on Moviefone.

And on Cleaview Cinemas site, it simply says “Sorry, showtimes are not available for this theater on…” thru January 8, 2009 which is as far as the drop down menu goes.

I look forward to seeing The Godfather I and II (new director’s cut or something) when they open here shortly for a special engagement.

Speaking of CHE…. I remember in either 1969 or 1970 seeing a double feature of CHE! (a dreadful movie, BTW) and THE SAND PEBBLES at a theatre on Long Island. I see on this page that THE SAND PEBBLES played as a reissue at the Ziegfeld on 06/17/70 for two weeks. I wonder if it was double featured with CHE! at some theatres in the NYC area, and out on the island, around that time and that was when I saw it? Anyone here have easy access to The New York Times on microfilm or maybe Newsday? That’s the only way I can think to find out.

Actually, Che is going to get a release. I think Magnolia picked up the rights.
It’s even going to play “roadshow” style with Intermission at the Zieg and the Landmark in Los Angeles.

Holy crap, Che is long. I can see why Soderbergh can’t find anyone in the US to release it.

But Del Toro looks like a badass in it.

Apology accepted.

By the way, if you have ever seen an Annette Funicello/Frankie Avalon movie, it is hardly an endorsement. “HSM3” will deliver the Hannah Montana tweenies in huge numbers based on the TV and DVD results of the first two. They should fill the house, if only for a weekend.

I see that AlAlvarez has made valuable and interesting comments on other movie theatres in Cinema Treasures, and I do apologize for my unnecessary comments I left on the Ziegfeld page.

You didn’t mention the name of the theatre, the Ziegfeld.

This is a forum about movie theatres.

Excuse me Ken, who elected you Sheriff of this forum? We don’t need your sarcasm or petty comments about other people’s posts either.

These off-topic personal attacks clutter up theater comments, making it difficult to find what people are actually looking for â€" information and discussion about classic movie theaters. (They also prevent the people who created and help run this website from working on more important issues.)

Lately, we’ve noticed many Cinema Treasures attacking each other. There are several theater pages where spirited debates about preservation have gotten increasingly personal.

These off-topic personal attacks clutter up theater comments, making it difficult to find what people are actually looking for â€" information and discussion about classic movie theaters. (They also prevent the people who created and help run this website from working on more important issues.)

So, to address this problem, we’d like to remind everyone about our terms of use. If you engage in any of the following actions, we will take appropriate action:

• Posting off-topic comments that taunt or bait other users

• Attacking or otherwise slandering fellow users, preservation officials, or theater managers â€" even if you have a legitimate grievance, this website isn’t the place for it

• Creating duplicate accounts for the purpose of attacking other Cinema Treasures users

• Posting comments that are racist, sexist, homophobic, slanderous, and otherwise against our terms of use.

The first time you violate any of theses rules you will receive a warning. The second time your posting privileges will be suspended for a month. The third time you will be banned from the site.

Please remember why we are all here â€" to discover, to preserve, and to protect. In the spirit of community and preservation, please leave the personal attacks out on the playground, so to speak, where they belong.

Thanks for your help!
