So what is the current status given the merger? Is the building being built? Will be it AMC verses being Loews. This is exciting as it will probably be the first (if not first) Loews devoloped AMC-opened theaters. Although during the crash they didn’t finish any GC theaters in progress (leaving two half-built Sundance Cinemas locations to later be devoloped as a Regal Cinemas “Movie Art” theater and The Bridge: Cinema De Lux).

I was wondering if the new theatre will have digital projection like the newer theatres as well as all the digital surround sound formats like SDDS-8, DTS-ES, and Dolby Digital EX as well as THX sound. Can’t wait! The only thing close to this new theatre was the Mansfield theatre in Hackettstown.

Okay, here’s the latest intel on the NEW Rockaway Mall theatres. Obviously, no one has updated this in a while. Here is the excerpt from the Rockaway Township website where it speaks to the point:

August 26, 2004: The Rockaway Township Planning Board granted approval for the construction of a 16-screen movie theater at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall at their August 16, 2004 meeting.

Mayor Louis S. Sceusi and other municipal officials have been working with Simon Property Group to establish a movie theater complex as an integral component to the Rockaway Townsquare Mall complex. Loews Theaters will be constructing a 16-screen, 3200-seat movie theater with state-of-the-art amenities, including stadium seating, two party rooms and a wheelchair accessible mezzanine level as part of the project.

The proposed cinema center is the fulfillment of a year long commitment by Simon Property Group and the Mayor to once again provide movie theaters for the benefit of the Rockaway Township community after the previous theaters in the Mall unexpectedly failed to renew their lease with Simon over a year ago.

According to Kevin Sims, Vice President of Community Center Development at Simon Property Group, “Rockaway Townsquare has always been a focal point within Rockaway Township, but it has been the spirit of cooperation between Simon and Rockaway Township officials that has resulted in these successes that will contribute to an even greater degree to the quality of life for Township residents and further reinforce Rockaway Townsquares appeal as a shopping destination.”

The AMC movie theaters inside the Rockaway Townsquare mall will remain open for the immediate future, as mall owners and theater company officials try to negotiate a long-term deal.

John Acker, general manager of the mall located off Routes 80 and 15 in Rockaway Township, confirmed yesterday that a short-term lease extension has been signed while the two sides talk about future plans.

Some AMC officials said in late 1996 that they planned to close the popular six-screen Inner Six Theaters, saying they were not too profitable. American Multi-Cinema Inc.’s lease at the Rockaway mall was due to expire at the end of 1997. The Inner Six opened about two decades ago and was the Morris County area’s first multi-theater complex. The Outer Six Theaters, located in a strip mall on the other side of the access road that circles the Townsquare mall, were not supposed to be affected.

Acker would not detail the length of the current lease or the possible terms of a new deal, saying it would be improper to divulge such information while talks are ongoing. He stressed, however, that movie theaters are in the mall’s long-term plans.

“One way or the other, there will always be theaters here,” said Acker, noting there is plenty of room for expansion, if needed.

Gary Haak, an AMC spokesman, also confirmed the short-term deal, but he did not return several phone calls over for the past two weeks to answer questions about AMC’s long-term plans.

The national movie theater chain’s future lies with complexes of 20 to 30 theaters, according to company officials. There are more than two dozen mega-complexes operating in the South, Midwest and West, and there are plans to eventually open some in New Jersey.

“We’re looking everywhere in the world right now,” Sonny Stuffle, marketing director for AMC’s Northeast division, said in 1996. “The idea is to hold movies over longer, to play them more than two weeks … giving us some room when there are several blockbusters running at once,” said Stuffle, who has not responded to recent phone calls.

But Stuffle stressed that existing smaller movie complexes, like the 10-screen Morristown theater complex, would remain open especially if they remain profitable.

AMC’s Rockaway Township and Morristown theaters drew the major share of Morris County moviegoers until recent years, when a Sony 12-plex theater opened in East Hanover and another 12-plex opened in Parsippany. There also is a 10-plex theater in the Succasunna section of Roxbury, an eight- theater complex in Kinnelon, six-screen theater in Chester, four-plex in Madison and a one-screen art- movie house in Chatham Township.

thanx for that info. i forgot to add it was inner and outer. i can’t believe they replaced the inner with stores. it was always packed. the outer closed in 2001? that sucks, it was a great place to see a movie. unfortunately, there’s always a sprawlmart popping up in communities and even within a mall complex to make room for something we don’t need. thanx for posting that info.
