Gustavelifting.. Re the Parachute Jump. It is doubtful if it will ever function again. Blame the high cost of insurance and the fact that there will probably be countless lawsuits filed by riders who get ‘shaken up’. Went on it once with my father when I was a kid, and it scared the hell out of me- although the view before the drop was awesome!
Anybody care to kick off the latest group of entries to be posted about the Jersey and the events scheduled to take place? it1s Labor Day weekend- one of the slowest weekends for filmgoing. The Jersey will be re-opening soon, and I would like to know what will be coming up.
Used to go here quite often in lte late v70s and early 80s. A very small, yet comfortable theater. The audience were film buffs, and I always managed to have interesting conversations with them. The double features were always interesting, or united by a theme. Among the many great shows I saw here were “ The Blue Angel” and “Cabaret” “The Maltese Falcon” and “The Big Sleep”,“White Heat” and “The Roaring Twenties”,“Cninatown” and “Five Easy Pieces”, The Original “War Of The Worlds” with “The Day The Earth Stood Still”“ Mutiny on the Bounty”-1935 and “The Caine Mutiny”. “Captain Blood” and “The Sea Hawk”, Etc. etc,It would de nice to go again, but I cannot interest amy friends or my girl to go. They rather stay home and watch DVDs!
Shoeshoe….Yes, that is the general idea, to revive this great theater to its former glory. Re all the posts on this theater there seems to be a lot of interest. Did you ever go there? It is truly spectacular. Even when the shows were lousy, just being there was all the fun. And you ARE right, this theater is huge{
Went for a drive last Sunday(8-21-05) in the Asbury Park area with my mother and brother. We remember Asbury Park from the Sixties and early seventies when it was a decent resort area.We also went to the Paramount many times, and it was a lovely theater. Considering Asbury Park now looks like London or Warsaw after the blitz, it1s amazing the theater still stands.I1m glad that it is still in use as a concert and opera house. If Asbury Park ever “comes back”– it never happened like it was supposed to twenty years ago- at least it will have a decent theater. The ornamental works on the building- especially the large copper galleon type ship models are especially impressive.
Gustavelifting… Maybe “the Bums” who moved to LA will never come back, but we do have the Cyclones and their new park in Coney IS. Granted, it isn`t major league ball, but it IS turning Coney Island around- for the good.
Guys,,, Yes, Rudy DID turn around NY. Times sq is now a family attraction, tourists are coming Downtown, So Ho, the East and West villages are always crowded, Tribeca is happening, Midtown buzzes, etc, etc, etc. However, aside from now trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope( wich seem to be extentions of Manhattan more than Brooklyn neighborhoods), the boro is still being refered to an “outre boro”. Granted, Flatbush was a hell in the 70s and most of the 80s, but it too has come back with a very lively Carribean flavor. If we can get people to look past the “outer boro” label and experience Brooklyn for ALL its vibrant areas , tjis would be a first step to the re-opening of the majestic Kings.
If the big money people and Hollywood start to release films direct to DVD asnd the !plexes started to close, would anybody care about preserving them? This probebly be the wave of the very near future as long as Hollywood keeps on turning out these “winners” that pass for movies these days. Who in their right minds would pay almost ten bucks to see “the Dukes of Hazzard” or the upcoming sequel to “Deuce Bigelow” These duds SHOULD have bypassed the theaters and should have been released straight to DVD in the 1st. place.
Cinema TYreasures with- or without a website upgrade is far, far more entertaining than almost any movie I saw in many years( Except for the classics, of course)The correspondence with on line theater nuts- and movie geeks are priceless!
Sequels, re makes tv into film, tv into film, remakes. Did I mention remakes- or tv into film? While most of what Hollywood turns out is not exactly “Hiroshima Mon Amour” it seems that they just gave up on the adult- or mature audience.
Re the posts on Sinatra films. I!m not really a fan of his( More my fathers generation) but with the fairly recent re make of “ Oceans 11. and its unnecessary sequel Ocaans 12”, prehaps people might want to see the real deal. Probably not a great film. but at least it has soul- and a great cast too. EO 11!
Vito… Very true, very true. You!ll be in for a treat when you go to the Jersey. Though still a “work in progress”, this is a grand theater in the classic Loews tradition.Let me know when “Porkys” and “Revenge of the Nerds ” opens- I wanna be first on line!
Gustavelifting and Vito….The Jersey is closed due to the non working air conditioning, it will re open in September, so don1t worry. And Vito, you MUST be kidding, but things being what they are, I believe you.You may remember that “Guess WHO1s Coming to Dinner” was very recently remade as “Guess Who” with Bernie Mac(I think) and Ashton Kutcher. After the recent flop of the remake of “The Flight of the Phoenix” WHY would anybody attempt to remake “The Poseidon Adventure”, Like Yogi Berra says, “Its Deja Vue all over again”.
Brucec… Withn the exception of only 2 films mentioned, every one you listed is a gem.In the very near future, I will probably get on a rant about the upcoming remakes that will be flooding the multiplexes real soon.
Yankee Mike… Did the Tilyou 2 or 3 times. It was a decent thearer that sort of resembled the RKO Dyker. Remember seeing “The Family Jewels” with Jerry Lewis and a double feature horror show- Cant remember the name.
Jim … Excellent! What else can we expect when God has become a controversial subject, and sleaze and morally bankrupt “trash TV'shows like Jerry Springer, Rikki Lake, and so called reality shows featuring disfunctional people airing their dirty laundry dominate todays "entertainment” scene?I am not exactly on the so called Religious Right- but enough is enough already! Maybe I1m old fashioned. but if this is what I am forced to watch, I1d rather read a good book, wspend time with family or friends, or engage in a hobby. And you are so right about money being an all consuming god. Unfortunately, the pursuit of the almighty dollar is what is driving most of todays movies. And yes,I stand by my word- most of todays movies are abysmal at best.
Irv… Could not agree with you more.Maybe I AM a crotchetty middle age guy, but as a lifelong moviegoer, the product kind of speaks for itself. Want some Prozac? Betcha its better than the Kool-Aid!
Vincemt.. I agree. War is wrong and should be avoided if possible. I did not support the Vietnam war, but by the same token, I would never do anything to dishonor my country. Jane Fonda simply cannot be forgiven by posing on that anti aircraft cannon with Viet Cong soldiers. That is treason, pure and simple. She should thank God that she was never tried for sedition.God bless America?

Again warren, thanks for this excellent interior shot of the Walker. You are doing all of us theaterbuffs a great favor! Thank you.

Or how about “Mutiny on the Bounty” with Gable and Laughton and “The Caine Mutiny” with Bogart. I like sea adventures.
Brucec.. Another great double feature “ Master and Commander+ with Russell Crowe AND "Captain Horatio Hornblower” with Gregory Peck.
