Was at the Ziegfeld this afternoon and spoke to Toni at the boxoffice who did indeed confirm the listings as Ed mentions. The last show on Sat. March 15 will be “Sound of Music” and the last show on Sat. March 22 will be “Jaws.” And yes, Craig did mention Bond and Apes, but Toni did not have any info yet on the second two weeks of the series.
The excitement that is already being generated here is fabulous. I mentioned the Saturday dates because I hope to meet and greet many of you there.
The Classics Schedule should be out shortly and this forum should once again become very,very lively. I, for one, am very excited about this, as I’m sure many Ziegfeld lovers are.
With that said, as we all already know, things are not going to be perfect or maybe not even close to perfect. But it is the Ziegfeld, it is the big screen, and these are the classics that can only be appreciated in a venue like this.
We may not agree with all of the titles chosen; some titles will be there because they bring in the people. Some titles may not be the crowd pleasers. But all titles will be enjoyed at the Ziegfeld.
And yes, there will be issues with curtains, overtures, intermissions, etc. I absolutely respect all opinions and feelings about these issues.
All I hope for is this: The Ziegfeld is special, the Classics are special, and we are special.
So amidst the assorted gripes ( hey, I wanted them to show “Xanadu” )
May we also see the positive energy flow here,a good mix of both will be nice, and I’ll see you at the movies.
For the Ziegfeld we have some Digital Prints of some James Bond Classics like Goldfinger and the Spy Who Loved Me. Planet of the Apes (new 35mm Print) for the 40th Anniversary.
We are also showing some classics Spielberg again: Jaws, ET & Back to the Future.
I live in the Five Towns area of Long Island-Nassau. My local library, which has always shown movies, is starting a “Big Screen” series a la the Ziegfeld Classics this Sunday Feb. 24 at 2 PM. First up- Close Encounters. I begged the program director to let me introduce the film—which I had the distinct honor and pleasure of doing at the Ziegfeld back at 2006. This time my intro will be different ( and shorter). But it’s a nice auditorium-It will probably be DVD, but will look great since they have the projection equipment for this-and it should be 1977 version Good fun for Oscar Afternoon

I actual saw both films the same day as well ( and if I had the strength would have done a third ). But my reaction was the reverse. I admired “Blood” very much, but didn’t give me much to think about, so help me out here. The arc of the story seemed predictable (well, not totally). But, regardless of the rich historical setting, Daniel just continued to go more and more into his “Fred C. Dobbs” routine-not that I didn’t admire the acting. “No Country,” to me was an allegory about Mr. Death-he’s around the corner and can be there at the flip of a coin. The whole drug-money plot was the Macguffin.
And finally, I went to Hannah Montana, day one, unfortunately couldn’t make it to the Zig, but I had a blast-not knowing anything about Miley Cyrus. She works very hard for the money-at 15! And puts on quite a show. The 3-D was phenomenal (real reason I was curious)-but for what it was,I left with a big smile on my face. She’s a good role model for pre-teens; sings songs about not being perfect and being yourself. She will not be a Britney meltdown!

I’ve seen “No Country for Old Men” four times and, each time, see another layer in a very multilayered film. I’m really curious as to why you were so disappointed!
Been a long time, I was at the 1 PM “Blade Runner” yesterday. Nice turnout, with a long line present for the next showing. Congrats to the Ziegfeld.(I agree, Bill, I was watching those close-ups also). An absolutely pristine movie going experience. I saw this film on opening day in 1982 and, regardless of the version, it just gets better and better with time.
From the poster, I thought that “Enchanted” might be a remake of “Sleeping Beauty” or “Snow White.” Think again. This one looks like a real hoot with an amazing premise. Can’t wait.
Also, as usual, I will be there Christmas day for “Sweeney Todd.”

I think we are both fans of the Ziegfeld Classics as I believe I see your name on the Ziegfeld page many times. I work in Cedarhurst (we could have had lunch together yesterday!) I sorely miss the Central, that’s where I saw Close Encounters in its original run. Incredible evening almost thirty years ago. These days I go over to Green Acres (not the Sunrise) or The Fantasy in RVC. I have issues with the Lynbrook at the five corners, and don’t get me started on the Malverne!! Best of all is the Ziegfeld. I saw Porgy and Bess not too long ago at Moving Image in Astoria. Reviving it at the Ziegfeld is a very creative move on Craig’s part. It’s not a well known film-but beautiful-I just hope people show up to see it!!

Craig is certainly on board and committed to the program. “Dreamgirls” will run its course, and if it’s making money for the theatre, all the better. I saw it on Christmas Day to a sold out audience. People could have gone to a bunch of theatres in Manhattan to see it, but the fact that they chose the Zig still shows that it is quite a special place.
So keep the faith, send an e-mail to Craig at Clearview to show your support, and see you at the Classics!!!

Positive or negative, I’m simply glad that the Ziegfeld classics continue (I remember putting “Jaws” on one of the comment cards last winter) and can only see it getting better and better with our collective input.

When I lobbied Craig for the Definitive Director’s Cut of Close Encounters last March ( the one I introduced), Craig was able to get a print from Spielberg.

Here’s something to cheer you up- MOMA, this month, is running their fourth Preservation festival. Yesterday, saw a beautiful pristine print of “True Grit,” which was introduced by the head of preservation at Paramount and John Wayne’s daughter in law. All spoke about MOMA’s commitment to the preservation of classics and the IMPORTANCE of seeing these films in a theatre, not just on home video. So keep the faith, despite the fact that Loew’s E-walk is showing “The Break Up” on five screens. “True Grit” was great after 37 years, who will remember “The Break Up”
Yes, I sorely miss the Classic series and plan on checking in with Craig as summer proceeds to Labor Day. I don’t think that there is one film this summer (Is MI:3 history already?) that I’m thrilled about seeing. For the first time that I can remember, Premiere magazine, in their Summer issue, did not list a “top ten” prediction. I think that I’m up for seeing Ben-Hur again- right now!!!
