I drove by this location about a week ago, but didn’t have my camera with me. Anyway, there is a lot of terra-cotta on this building. I can’t be sure it is the actual theater building or not, but I guess it could be.
Here’s an aerial photo of the location. The Kossuth Theater location is the building with the blue awning, which is now a laundromat. I am not sure if it’s the same building or not. It’s an old building, with lots of terra-cotta, but can’t be sure without some further research:
Interesting find Lost! I always thought the building did look ‘theater-like", but of course, I have no idea if this was built to be a theater or not.

Peter, last Halloween, the Boulton Center theater (former Regent) in Bay Shore had a Hitchcock night, where they played Psycho and The Birds in a double header. It would have been a chance for me to see it in an old single screen theater, but wasn’t able to get over there.
It’s a performing arts center, but it still has the capacity to show film, which is nice, and they occasionally do stuff like that.
Actually, seriously, I would think the Madison would have been a truly great place to see a horror movie. As you enter into it’s imposing Gothic exterior, ornate interior, and perhaps it’s somewhat failing condition by the 1970’s if they were planning to close soon anyway, it must have been the perfect setting to see a horror movie.
I remember my father telling me how he and his friends were scared to death when they saw Psycho in the theater when it came out. I don’t remember if he told me he saw it in the Ridgewood or the Madison, but either way, he said it was a sight to behold.
This isn’t the old Hillside Theater burning is it? It for some reason looked like a theater to me, but am not sure. This fire is in a building on Sutphin Blvd:
Native Forest Hiller, I am so glad you have gotten involved. I just wanted to thank you so much for getting involved in the Ridgewood Theater, which not only is historic for it’s amazing non-stop 90 year run, but also because since it is still open as of right now, holds such a lot of history and memories for all who past through the old work-horse’s doors over the decades. It would be sad to lose one of NYC’s LAST operating old movie houses. There are not many left, just look around all the boroughs. You hyave a few here and there, but the number is dwindling every year.
I just wanted to thank you for all you efforts. I saw how much work you had put into the Trylon, and now the Ridgewood Theater thanks you too.
I guess that ad is also proof that they used to call the theater at one time “RKO Keith’s Flushing”, as it says in the old painted sign on the side of the building. Similar to the way the old RKO Keith’s Richmond Hill was called that way.
Can’t someone please submit an opening paragraph for this theater (I would, but feel someone more familiar with this theater should). It’s amazing that a theater as the status of one Wonder Theaters can get by on the site without even a sentence about it in the opening feature section.

Now I am confused too. What was the “Joy’s” Theater? I know the “Joy” Theater is on Canal St, but that is on the other side of Canal, so it couldn’t be in the back ground of the angle the Saenger was taken at.

Well, it finally started working again it looks like, I sent a email to the webmasters, and perhaps they were able to fix my problem thankfully.
I know how to stop the emails if I want them to stop (I did that for a few theaters that either had too many messages posted, or I lost interest in), but in my case they just stopped, and I didn’t want them to stop.
This morning, they began working again.
You are correct Peter, as I actually drove from Ridgewood to Downtown Brooklyn, via Myrtle Ave, on Saturday, Dec 12, 1992 for something I had to do that day, and it was a pretty snowy day. Remember it like it was yesterday….
But the strange thing is, it stops coming from ALL theaters when the problem comes up. I didn’t get one email from the site since Sept 8th Even theaters I posted in about a week ago. I figured it was just “slow”, but then I randomly checked ones I constantly get emails from, and sure enough, the Keiths, Valencia, Ridgewood all had recent comments, but I didn’t get the emails.
This didn’t happen to everyone even back in June when it happened to me the first time.
I posted in 5 theaters yesterday, and am getting the emails again from the ones I just posted in yesterday, like the Valencia, etc, but not all the others. Strange.
I don’t feel like commenting in every theater I want email updates from again like I did back in June, the last time it happened, but I guess I’ll have to slowly do it over time.
I wish there was a way to turn on theaters again without commenting, like a “watch this theater” box or something.
Friedricks was the first store that occupied the building I believe. She actually repaired the building. I don’t remember what if anything was in the theater between when Friedricks closed, and when the church moved in.
All I have to say is “Wow”, that is some photo. It’s hard to believe Queens Blvd once looked like that.

It appears the Glenwood was one of the first “larger” theaters to close in Ridgewood. ANyone know when exactly it actually closed to showing movies?
