REGGIE3, If you live in the Tidewater Area, I wish you would please fill in any info you have on the Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, etc theatres I have been and will be adding to this site. I’m doing this sorta by remote control from the Chicago area. Thanks, Bob Jensen
CLOSED! The Marcus South Towne Cinema closed it’s doors on Sunday, September 17, 2006. Back in August Marcus officials stated that the South Towne cinema would close “later this year”, this was in the same story about the development of a new Marcus complex in the Tradewinds Business Center. This closure will leave a bit of a void for Southeast Madison untill the new cinema opens, the date for which has not been determined. The new complex has not yet begun construction, so its future existence is not assured.
To get a good view from the air, click on MAP, then click on SATELLITE or HYBRID and enlarge as large as possible. It looks just like an old fashioned theatre!
u.s. navy RETiried Aviation storKeeper Chief petty officer (Naval AirCrewmen). In the U.S. Navy when a sailor is promoted to Chief it’s a big deal “the Chiefs run the Navy” we have an initiation. With a rate of AKC which as you mention stands for the American Kennal Culb the old salty Chiefs came up with a costume I had to wear, you guessed it, a DOG!
KEN MC, Virginia Beach is the home of Pat Robertson, his 700 Club, his Christian Brodcasting Network(one of the largest television ministries in the world), his Regent Universties 3,000 students and his total assets last year of $251,060,000, if I got that number right! Yes some may say that amount of money IS pagan!
Lost Memory’s photo above makes me think of three questions, that perhaps someone out there can answer:
1. Who is the man in the photo?
2. Down the street I can see a sign that says PALACE, is that another theatre?
3. Is there a name for those boards that they put up, about the movie that cover the whole wall of the theatre under the marquee? I’ll bet the movie played a lot more then a week if they made up those boards, I know Balaban & Katz in Chicago did the same thing to their theatres.
BUFFFILMBUFF If I remember right, the ROSELE theatre was on Ocean View Avenue near Granby Street. I think it was across the street from the OCEAN VIEW AMUSMENT PARK. The roller coaster at OCEAN VIEW AMUSMENT PARK was blown up in the 1977 SENSURROUND movie ROLLERCOASTER.
The theatres from yesterday, listed above are from THE FILM DAILY YEAR BOOK OF MOTION PICTURES for 1967. I would guess that before and after 1967 some other theatres might have been LEVINE’s. Except for the WILLARD, PARK and CAPRI all the theatres are listed on Cinema Treasures, With the best address I could come up with (The AUTOPORT DRIVE-IN is under NEWPORT DRIVE-IN).
I’m glad you finally got to see three panel CINERAMA in Dayton, I had thought about going to resee them, but never did.
To see the NEWPORT theatre from the air, click on map, change the address to 636, click on SATELLITE or HYBRID, enlarge as much as possible. The Newport theatre auditorium is right at the top of the arrow. As I’ve said before I think the entrance was on NEWPORT Avenue which is the street to the right of the building. I’m in the Chicago area, is there anyone in Norfolk who can check this out?
That works! Click on MAP, change the address to 636, click on SEARCH MAPS, click on SATELLITE or HYBRID, enlarge as much as possible and the top of the arrow is on the auditorium of the NEWPORT theatre. The ROSNA theatre is to the left. The V that sticks out of the building over the sidewalk is the marquee.
If you go to MAP, enlarge it as much as posible and click on SATELLITE or HYBRID you can clearly see the drive-in site just to the left of the arrow. I wonder how old the photo is and if the land has anything on it yet?
LOST MEMORY, Thanks so much for filling in some of the information for the Rosna, Memrose, and Rosele Theatres. Two framed photos of a man and lady hung over the doors between the lobby and auditorium of each LEVINE theatre. I would guess the photos were taken in the 1930’s. If I remember right the man was mostly bald and had a mustache the lady had waves set in her hair (I’d ask my wife what that’s called, but she’s still asleep) and ladies don’t wear that style hair now. After wondering all these years who they were and how the names of these theatres came from, thanks to you I now know, Nathan and Rose LEVINE. You must have got your information from an article about movie theatres in Norfolk from THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT March 15, 1995. I would love to read that article. I’m near Chicago, any suggestions on how I can beg, borrow or steal a copy of that article? Thanks!
That must be Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, that would put tne Memrose more or less between Raleigh Avenue and Fairfax Avenue on Colley Avenue. Alas, in those days, I think Colley Avenue was straight. I think, when it was widened a big curve was put in it, so I think the old Colley Avenue is now called Childrens Lane? Anyone else know anything about this or the Memrose? From what I can remember, I would guess it was BUILT in the 1930’s and was sorta ART DECO.
Something is wrong with this address. The Newport Theatre and the Rosna Theatre have the same address and they sure are two different theatres. The Rosna Theatre is now St Andrews Temple which has an address of 616 W 35th Street. If I remember right the Newport Theatre was on the same block, but it’s entrance was around the corner on Newport Avenue, hence the name NEWPORT. I would guess the address should be something like 35?? Newport Avenue?
LEVINE THEATRICAL ENTERPRISES, which was a first class act, is the chain for this theatre.
I first found this theatre back in the early 1960’s and it was closed and I seem to remember a bunch of leaves had gathered in the alcove at the entrance. Later on it reopened and I seem to recall a somewhat ornate style inside (certainly not art deco or streamlined). I think at that time they showed double bills, I seem to remember seeing older movies I had never seen before such as GRAND HOTEL and SHOWBOAT. I don’t live in Norfolk any longer, but I understand it was converted to stores and had it’s sign changed to Newport Plaza, but I think it’s now closed. Can anyone out there add anything else?

LEVINE THEATRICAL ENTERPRISES is the chain for these theatres:

Rosele
Memrose
Rosna
Willard
Capri
Riverview
Newport

Colony
Super 17 Drive-In
Autoport Drive-In
Who was Willard? I always wondered about some of the theatre names, I can see the Rose in the first 3 theatres, that’s very interesting to find out. Thanks for that info, makes sense to me. LEVINE really put on a first class act in all it’s theatres! I think the Riverview Theatre is owned by a Richard? LEVINE who is a lawyer? owns some carpet stores? and is remodeling a motel he owns? down the street from the Riverview Theatre.
Speaking of how names come about, here’s something I found out about a few days ago that has nothing to do with theatres. Another interesting name in Norfolk is the JANAF Shopping Center. It was built on a military airfield from World War II. Joint Army Navy Air Force, get it JANAF.
Can anyone else add anything about LEVINE and it’s fine theatres?

CORRECTION, seats is listed as 1, but it states “The auditorium seated in the neighborhood of 500.”.
