My all time best movie experience was during the exclusive engagement of Dreamgirls in Dec ‘06. The price: $25. It was Sold Out! The crowd was electric. The curtains closed and then opened. Everyone was hooting and hollering and clapping. (There were no commercials and no previews I might add.) It was an incredible experience. People applauded with enthusiasm after every blockbuster musical number. I will never forget that experience and it happened……at The Ziegfeld! p.s. it was worth every dollar!
The print of West Side Story was quite good. Some scratches here and there, especially around the reel changes, but nothing to complain about. The sound was room-shaking when it needed to be. The color was excellent. Some of the color changes during the overture were so intense they made my eyes hurt. I mean that as a compliment!
It was a 35mm print. The prevues before the movie, including Indiana Jones and Mamma Mia, were shown digitally. Goldfinger and The Spy Who Loved Me are being shown digitally in April. Hopefully they’ll be as impressive as Blade Runner was last year.
Wow. I’m beyond excited to see West Side Story. I just hope I can, the only time I can make it into the city this week is probabbly the Thursday showing and even then will be cutting it short seeing as I get out of school at 3:30 and the movie starts at 4:30. They need more weekend showings. But anyway, I’m amazingly, beyond excited for West Side Story, but can anyone tell me how it looked? How was the quality, picture, audio, etc? And are they using film, cause I heard some of Clearview’s theatres do DVD presentations. And if they are, 35mm, or, and this would be an amazing thing, 70?

What I couldn’t get over was how funny it was. When you see it alone on TV or DVD, you do notice the jokes and the witty lines in the script. But when surrounded by an appreciative audience like we were on Saturday night, I found myself laughing out loud at them. There’s nothing like seeing a classic movie with a good audience.
I went last year with some friends and it was great fun! I totally recommend it!
How are the Grease sing-a-longs going? I’m taking my 3 year old daughter to Wednesday’s show at 4:30pm, and I hope we have a lively group. (She’s seen the movie on the big screen once before, and a couple of times on TV, and is looking forward to this show. Her first movie palace!)

Thank you for the kind words-doing these intros to the classics and being “The Ziegfeld Man” is a dream come true. The enthusiasm for “The Sound of Music” was clearly felt throughout the place. A perfect evening. I look forward to introducing most of the Saturday night screenings with “Jaws” next-which will include a tribute to the late, great Roy Scheider who left us in February.

Fox did strike new prints of Planet of the Apes a few years ago. When I ran a brand new Fox vault print of it at the Lafayette Theatre in 2004, it was perfect. Most likely the Ziegfeld will get a similar print, though hopefully it hasn’t been harmed by disinterested projectionists prior to them getting it.
Can anyone here tell me for certain that the print of PLANET OF THE APES that will be shown between March 28 thru April 3 will be a good one? I’m going to fly to New York to see this — because it’s my favorite movie, and I missed seeing it in Manhattan in ‘68 because I was only eight and didn’t know better (saw BENEATH at Loew’s State 2 though in '70 — but I really want to make sure I’m going to all this expense to see a good print.

Gary the Ziegfeld Man told some good jokes to warm up the crowd before last night’s screening of “The Sound of Music”. Can’t get that at your local multiplex. Neither can you get to see “West Side Story” and “The Sound of Music”, on a 50 foot screen turned up impressively loud, both on the same day. I felt like I’d attended a Robert Wise master class on how to most effectively stage large groups of actors for the wide screen. Thank you Gary, thank you Robert Wise and thank you Ziegfeld.

Anybody know what the deal is with the Clearview/Ziegfeld classics schedule? When I bring up the website the musicals week is no longer listed. They only have the schedules listed starting with Spielberg week. Was something changed? Check it out for yourself.

Someone PLEASE list the showings for PLANET OF THE APES and its sequels as soon as possible! This is the must-see event for me and I’ll be spending a lot to travel to NYC to see it. Thanks!
I was going to see Dr.No and From Russia With Love at the Film Forum in April. Guess now I will have to change my plans.

I can’t believe that the summer’s much-anticipated films IRON MAN and INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL are coming to the Ziegfeld this May. I hope that the upcoming Disney/Pixar film WALL-E will be also shown at the Ziegfeld this summer. This is going to be off the chain!

The full Ziegfeld classics schedule is up. I strongly recommend all Bond fans see “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” there. As for the new movies listed, one of them is the new Martin Scorsese film (“Shine a Light”), I don’t know anything about “Iron Man”, and the other is that new Lucas/Spielberg collaboration. Very good news all around. It’s going to feel good going to the Ziegfeld after work so many times between now and May:

In regards to the Bond films, I know that from “Dr. No” and up to “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, they have been restored and new 35 mm prints were made. These were screened last year at the Aero in LA. Don’t know about the Moore or Dalton films.

Was at the Ziegfeld this afternoon and spoke to Toni at the boxoffice who did indeed confirm the listings as Ed mentions. The last show on Sat. March 15 will be “Sound of Music” and the last show on Sat. March 22 will be “Jaws.” And yes, Craig did mention Bond and Apes, but Toni did not have any info yet on the second two weeks of the series.
The excitement that is already being generated here is fabulous. I mentioned the Saturday dates because I hope to meet and greet many of you there.

Only the first two weeks are up on the official website. Musical week with WEST SIDE STORY, SOUND OF MUSIC and GREASE followed by Speilberg week with JAWS, BACK TO THE FUTURE and ET. Well, I guess it’s a sort-of Speilberg week since BTTF is not really his directorial work.
I hope they add to this. Didn’t Craig mention a possible digital classic Bond week and a new 40th anniversary 35mm PLANET OF THE APES print?
