Judging by the building, it was never that large of a theater to begin with.

Anyone have any more information about the Echo theater?

I wonder if this was always just a “storefront” theater, or if it was a theater that was torn down for the current building. I can’t figure out if the current building is the theater, or a replacement after the theater was torn down, at a very early date.

Flushing is, and always on the Island of Long Island….as is Brooklyn, the rest of Queens, etc….haha.

Seriously though, this is an interesting find. I don’t think there was another theater called the “Flushing”. It would seem strange that they would call the keiths in Richmond Hill the Richmond Hill, but not call the Keith’s in Flushing the Flushing. Seeing that “Flushing” is painted on the side of the building would almost have to say that they called it the FLushing, even if for a short time. Good find about the organs….I don’t know if it completely proves it, but it a start.

Looking at the interior photos, the place is FAR from abandoned. The club owners put a lot of money into the place.

Wow, that is strange. At first glance it looks abandoned! Your photo looks just like I remember it, but to me it looked abandoned!….

Thanks for the info. It appears the Grandview and the Majestic had similar lives. They looked similar, were owned by the same people at one time, and both became funeral parlors…

Thanks for the info! A 2200 seat theater is nothing to sneeze at, sos you are right, it must be quite large.
And from the great photos Warren posted of the interior auditorium, it is/was quite impressive. I wish we could dig up some current photos of the inside.

Tonino, the photo does it justice. It doesn’t look all that great in the photo, and looks even worse in person.

Bway commented about Update your email address on Jun 7, 2006 at 9:59 am

I don’t, unless I reposted in theaters I wanted emails from. Any theater I posted in (and didn’t repost in) before May 26th or so is dead, and I don’t get email updates from them anymore. I have just given in, and started reposting a message in theaters I want the emails from, but it’s a long process. I don’t know why this happened to me, and a few other people like saps, and not other people. But it definitely stopped working – again, at least for theaters I haven’t posted in after May 25th or so. I do get them for anything I posted in after I found out about this problemm around June 1st.
No idea what happened, and why it happened.
I have a suspision though. I checked saps' email, and it’s a “hotmail” address like mine (that I use for the site) is a “hotmail” address. I have a feeling the site may have thrown out hotmail addresses when they did something to update the site? I don’t know why else it could have happened to me. The only similararity saps and I have (both of us not getting the update emails) is that we use a hotmail address. Otherwise I have no idea why we would not get the emails, but everyone else still does.

Thankfully, at least I am beginning to get them again, at least for the theaters I have reposted in, but it’s a pain to have to go back to each theater just to post a message so I begin getting the email notifications again. The email notifications are really the lifeline of the site, and rely on them to keep current, so I hope they continue to come.

It all sounds logical. And for the record, I don’t think the RKO Keith Richmond Hill ever had anything more than “RKO Keiths” on it either, IINM….

LOL! But at least “Madison” was a part of it’s name! Why would they paint “FLUSHING” across the side of their theater if that was never even a part of their name?

Bway commented about RKO Keith's Theatre on Jun 6, 2006 at 6:27 pm

Probably….however, it’s strange that it’s painted right on the side of the building, but would never have been referred to as the RKO Keiths Flushing.

Well, I lost all contact with all the theater email notifications, and this was something I wanted to do for a while anyway, and to get back on the lists you have to post something in the theater sections, so it sort of kills two birds with one stone….
More some other day….

Bway commented about Alhambra Theatre on Jun 6, 2006 at 10:28 am

The Alhambra was converted to a safeway Supermarket in 1966.
The Alhambra building shines at the top of this photo overlooking Irving Square Park. The building has had windows punched into it’s sides at some point. I don’t know what it is currently used as, but the exterior is well maintained. It’s vaudeville days origins are apparant as it’s large stage area is evident at the back end of the building:

Well, it’s been a while, and I’m trying to get back on the email list for this theater anyway…..
So over a year later, did we ever find out where the Ridgewood Folly Theater was?……

Bway commented about RKO Keith's Theatre on Jun 6, 2006 at 9:49 am

Thanks Ed! My suspision is correct then! It was called the RKO Flushing at one time. Perhaps that should be added to the aka names above? I mean, it’s even painted on the side of the building!
Great collection of photos by the way….

The building looks like it was used as a knitting mill after it’s theater days.
