Yes the Wurlitzer organ is having a important part replaced. So A temporary Organ has been brought in.I made an error in my post saying that the Wurlitzer organ would be played for tonight’s show.can’t wait for it to come back .

If anyone noticed that the theatre currently has 2 organs, it is just temporary. The current organ is a digital instrument temporarily installed while the 1920’s pipe organ is undergoing some much overdue repair work. For the record, the New York Theatre Organ Society has committed $10,000 for this repair which will bring the Wurlitzer pipe organ back better and more glorious than ever. We expect this to be completed around the first week in April, as the digital substitute has a new gig later that week. We are counting on the management of the Lafayette Theater for their cooperation in accomplishing this task. Once done, we promise the patrons will be happy!

Rstewart. Thank you for your positive comments. Hope you can come up from the Lehigh Valley to see some classics this spring. I know the Lehigh Valley has a lot of older theaters. Like the beautiful Roxy Theatre in North Hampton Pennsylvania and the Emmaus theater in Emmaus Pennsylvania. As well the 19th St. theater.too bad none of them do classic films

It is very difficult to get 35mm prints now. Even in the last season that Pete and Nelson did classic films,in spring of 2013. It was getting harder and harder for Pete to get 35mm prints. He did run a bunch of 35mm, but he had to also run a fair number of DCP’s that season. If Pete Nelson had stayed on, they would have had to run more DCP’s as the years went on. I’m sure they still would’ve been able to get some 35mm. But not as it was in years past where they had every film, run in 35mm.

Plus the cost of getting a 35mm print is higher than running acDCP. The total cost of renting a 35mm print and paying for the shipping back-and-forth, comes to about $620. The DCP cost about $350 to screen.

Well, I’ll say that although I am a pretty good distance from Suffern (in the Lehigh Valley of PA), we try to go up as we can to see films and I think it is wonderful that they still try to present classics. We have a comparable theater here, the State, that I wish had an interest in screening classics from time to time, but they just don’t seem to care to do it. At one time in Atlanta, the Fox used to have a very good summer film program, but that has been scaled down over the years. Many cities have lost their film groups and clubs, so finding classics on the big screen is getting harder and harder, we should all applaud and support the Lafayette for doing what they can to screen the classics and maintain their wonderful facility. Some time ago someone posted something negative about seeing The Godfather at the Lafayette in digital and I’ll stand by my response then, “It will still be better than seeing The Godfather in digital at some 100 seat sticky floor, crackerbox multiplex or at home.” Kudos to the current operator of the Lafayette and to Nelson and Pete for everything they have all done to preserve such a wonderful place to spend a few hours.

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions.advertising in the Journal news using social media like Facebook Twitter along with the word-of-mouth is really helping to get more and more folks into the theater. American sniper was our biggest grossing movie with the best attendance throughout its run, it’s set a record for the most people in attendance. They are far more than 10 to 20 paying customers for each of our classic shows this past fall.Nelson had a very good run at the Lafayette the years he was there. The reality is that the movie companies are making it much more difficult for a single screen theater Or any small independent, theater with even 2 to 4 screens.

That is the major reason Nelson decided to leave and retire completely from the movie business.

Phil, don’t you think if you listed the classics in a larger paper like The Record you would get a better turnout? The Journal may be good but The Record is better. How many people do you think listen to WRCR on a daily basis and do you really think the ads will draw people into the theatre? And where exactly did you put up posters for this past “classic” series? And I’m not talking about those dismal, smeared 8x11 flyers. I’m talking about the larger 11x17 posters that somebody made for you guys. You never put up one single copy in town; not even on the front door! Why were they made if you never intended to use them? Filling the theatre with seniors, who pay nothing to get in, and only getting 10 – 20 paid admissions is not a sustainable business plan is it?

I’m one of those reading these posts who has never been to this theater. I’d love to but it is a bit far from Philly. I appreciate that there are classics, and I enjoy readng the annoucements of the next new movie. Seeing the photos & hearing accounts makes it more than “special.” The Lafayette is an incredible “cinema treasure” and I’m pleased it remains open for people to enjoy movies in.

Classic films are advertised in the weekend section of the Journal news. posters for the classic series are put up all over suffern and throughout Rockland. The theater has an ad running throughout the day on Rockland local AM station WRCR. Groupon has an ongoing deal for discount admission to the theater. It has brought a lot of new people into the theater.

Phil, I have been going to the Lafayette since 2006. I don’t understand why you continually try to make everything sound “special” when it really isn’t. 99% of the people who read this will never go to the theatre because they don’t live in the area. Most of the paying public know nothing about this site, so you are just spinning your wheels. Just like the “classics” you run on Saturday mornings; you don’t advertise them, never mention them in newspaper listings. Did you even bother to put up the mini-posters someone made for you around town? It’s just sad to see all of Nelson & Pete’s hard work slowly degrade like it ’s been doing ever since they left.

I don’t understand why you call it a “special” Thursday night opening when the movie opens all over on Thursday night?? What’s so “special” about yours, other than it’s showing in a “iconic 1920’s movie palace”, as you like to remind us so very often??
