While the Midwest was still open during the premier of Dillinger, it had really run down and was only playing second runs and grade b films otherwise, it would have been perfect for one more final premier.
The ole Yale was a neat second run theatre in the 50’s. I started working their in my sophmore year on week ends taking ticket for a whooooping .35 per hour. I stuck to it and worked my way up the ladder to become the 1st usher for .45 per hour…That was 1957 and the owner required the first usher to wax and buff his law ofc which was on the west side of the box ofc. and I finally gave up that huge opportunity after some 8 months. The owner also owned and operated the old Mayflower Theatre NW 23rd, near Classen Blvd and the kids working at that theatre were also paid about the same..
Midwest Theatre, OKC, hosted the 1960 World Premier of “Cimaron” with all the fan fare of a Hollywood Premier. Glen Ford, Maria Schell, Russ Tamblyn, Anne Baxter were all present. The Theatre was redecorated with new seats, carpet, drapes and fresh paint for the event. Several notables were present for the premier including Miss Oklahoma. The premier was over seen by MGM representatives who also were supervising some of the remodel. The movie played for 8 weeks and was reserved seating through out the run. Movie goers dressed up, guys in suit, ties and lady’s in long dress with high heels unless it was for a matinee and then wheat jeans were in order.
