My father in the late 1920’s performed with several of his January 1928 East Technical High School classmates on the stage when the Liberty had amatuer vaudeville nights. He always spoke highly of the Liberty though I was never in the theatre. We used to drive by it when I was a kid with my father talking of those great days. I think he may have also ushered there when he was in high school. So great to see the other comments about the Liberty.
Was the Uptown located on the northeast side of St.Clair and East 105th street? If so it would have been next to the Glenville Masonic Temple. I remember when they tore the theatre down and replaced it with a Giant Tiger Discount Department Store and remember going their with my parents. The East 105 and St Clair theatre district was one of three on the east side of Cleveland with Playhouse Square and East 105 and Euclid. I don’t know if I was ever in the Uptown, but I do know my parents were since my grandparents lived off of Eddy Road on Paxton for many years.
The news today on national news tells of a serial killer who had several bodies right around the corner from the old Shaw-Hayden. I knew that area well though I grew up in South Euclid. Just across the street and closer to Shaw there was a restaurant named Nelsons where my parents had their wedding reception when they were married on June 27, 1936. Driving to my grandparents home on Paxton in Cleveland, many times we would see the Shaw-Hayden. In addition on Hayden I remember Susex Fish and Chips which was a little further north on Hayden. Although I don’t remember seeing a movie at the Shaw-Hayden though I may have when I was really young, I wonder if there were any pictures of the inside of that famed theater? I know one thing is for certain and that is that they “didn’t build them like they use to” which was the case for Shaw-Hayden.
