Butterfield had sold the theatre and the new owners ‘cleaned it up’ and started putting concerts in. They removed alot of the large vases and statues from inside, never to be seen again.(I was told most likely they were just thrown in the trash dumpster in the back and no one even gave it a thought.)They also destroyed the orchestra rail and pit, filled it in , the organ is still there , but not sure of the condition , I know the person who rebuilt it a few years ago, he is not sure of the current condition of it .(I have his name and email if you have questions about the State Barton organ)
When the theatre was reseated, I do not know when, they only did
the main floor, all the seats in the balcony were not changed, They definalty have wear, they are possibly the seats from the first reseat from the wooden seats to cushion seats, I have a picture of the balcony and yo can see the seats, the old velvet worn spots, rips tears, I had a seat for a concert in the balcony, and there was no seat, just the shell of it, I had to sit on the step. When this web site gets organized and allows downloads, Ill post my interior pictures of the State.
In approx 1980, the fascade had some things removed, the scalloping off the roof etc., but that is the only change. Most of the emblishments were removed then.
The vertical marquee was replaced approx. 1964.
The theatre still has concerts going on, I have a ticket to Jim Brickman in Nov. I personally dont know anything about Case Mgt,. but the theatre has shows scheduled up thru next spring. And there is supposed to be a film in Dec.,(a special thing like Rocky Horror or such )
If I see anything in the paper Ill post it.

Some great shots of the marquee and some of Times Square from 1979,in the movie TIMES SQUARE. and one quick off to the side shot of the WORLD TRADE CENTER Towers.
I saw THE LAST WALTZ concert film there in 1982 as a re release, and in 70MM 6-track Dolby Concert level Stereo.
also went to Regency 3 downtown and saw MISSING with Sissy Spacek, smaller than the others, and not as nice.
I attended the Tiffany regulary for ROCLY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, and other features, got some good memories there,, sitting in the 3rd row CENTER, for A STAR IS BORN 76, it was right in my face, and the sound was wonderful. The Tiffany was my fav place away from Hollywood Blvd.
I went to this theatre with my grandmother, after i begged to go see, SUGARLAND EXPRESS, That was the only time I was there, hope to see inside again soon !! and ill have a camera. they still had the wooden seats and wooden floor that creeked.
I would be interested in helping to get it up and running again.
I worked here in 1981(left late Jan. of 1982.), crazy theatre, crazy projectionest, and Caligula on its last 2 weeks, soon we would be a second run double feature, I remember THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA ( I think that was the only place it played), LOOKER, RICH AND FAMOUS,RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY.
, ESCAPE FROM NY, and many others.
I worked with asst. managers Lori Ham and Dewayne Stickney, and I think the head manager’s name was Jim.
And reading the previous comments on Steve the projectionest, its all true, he was/is psycho.
I used to go to the Paramount, now the El Capatian, sit in the closed balcony, watch French Lts. Woman,( and many others ) eating Burger King . Now, those were the days.
The Holly was ran by SRO Sterling Rec. Org., we called it S#itty Release Org.( seemed we always got the crappy pictures, HEARTBEEPS with Bernadette Peters and Andy Kaufman opened at the Paramount, I dont think they even had 500 people the first week ) but SRO liked to be referred to as Standing Room Only,,, All the time I worked at the Holly, there was NEVER anything close to a sell out.(Nor at the Paramount then, even then (81) there was talk of the Paramount building to go down, Im so glad it didnt, I was at the ElCapatian in 2001. Im glad someone saved this Boulevard gem.
I hope to be able to come for IMITATION OF LIFE, that is one of my all time favs !!

I was in Hollywood in July 2001, and a store was in place of the former Holly, no visible traces of it being a theatre.
