A great place in the 40’s -70’s to see great silent movie programs. Run by a sweet couple, she’d sell candy and he’d run the projector. It’s been renovated to nicer then it ever was, and the silent movies look great. Also they have a pianist playing along live to the movies. Highly recommended!!!

The San Val was the first Drive-In I ever went to. A double feature of the Beatles “Hard Days Night” and “Help”. Wasn’t as grand as other Valley drive-in’s like the “Victory” or “Van Nuys” but it had a nice playground under the screen.

I worked at the Sherman in the late 70’s. It was a really nice charming neighborhood moviehouse, it had about 500 seats and an small art deco lobby. We showed art films and old movies. There would be a theme for each program Sci-Fi,Film Noir,Japanese Cinema ..etc. We showed “Rocky Horror” and"Eraserhead" at midnight (David Lynch use to come in. so did Ron Howard,Charles Martin Smith, Robbie the Robot and Micheal Jackson…he lived nearby) It had a baskin robbins and mexican food place next door to it (they still exists there) They tore it down in 1984 and built a 3 story Coldwell Bank building.

BrianMontgomery commented about Lankershim Theatre on Jun 24, 2002 at 3:40 pm

The Lankershim was a plain single screen independent theatre that showed 2nd run movies in the 60’s and 70’s. Located in the bad section of North Hollywood(is there a good section?) It showed a lot of MGM films in the 70’s like “They Only Kill Their Masters” & “Rollerball” was rented out a lot to show SunClassic movies (four-walling) “In Search of Noah’s Ark”, “The Lincoln Conspiracy”…etc.. Kind of a dump, it was a Pussycat Theatre in the late 70’s for about a week (but the neighborhood picketed) now it’s a spanish church!

The El Portel is/was a beautiful theatre that had a cool little split balcony and a cool ticket booth. In the 70'’s it was about the nicest theatre in the valley. It was closed for many years but is now used to showcase plays. I think it was built in the late 30’s.
