A few days on Sept 11 Wilcox Cinema 6 closed in Vicksburg Mall. In the post the owner decline to mention why he had to close the cinema here in Vicksburg Ms. Yet the Mall Operation says another Cinema is coming but he couldn’t say when. I rated Wilcox when it was open average but it had one problem. It would hold over movies for long peirods time. Before it close The Man From UNCLE,THe Gallows were held over the past sevral months. Antman,Fantastic 4,Mission Impossible Rogue Syndica didn’t open. The Cinemas Facebook page hasn’t been updated on its closing. But a few comments on locals are there. So for the River City is without a cinema again.

But they don’t get the big cinema hits which are in 3d. As a result the small operator loses his his market to the larger markets like those in Jackson metro area where Cinemas like the Malco17 in Madison have 3d tech to show 3d movies. Like Disney’s fourth Toy Story didn’t open here at all in Vicksburg but since this small operator doesn’t have the 3d tech I believe effects the bottom line.

Thus far this cinema has missed out on the big hits of the summer including Toy Story 3D. Already Wilcox has lost its share of teen and parent audiences to the jackson marketplace which has the Real 3d tech. Plus not all the animation isn’t realease in 2d which creates a problem as well.
Toy Story 3d didn’t open at Wilcox theaters here becouse they lack the 3d technology to support such films. What I have learn independent cinema operators struggling to compete with the chains. I can tell you on Saturday afternoon Wilcox can’t fill in the seats. I figure u don’t have 3d film like Toystory nor Alice in Wonderland the audience will not come that simple.

Apoclyspe Now was my first R-rated film. To this day I love watching the choppers swoop in to the Wagner’s Valkryie. At the time the ending perturbed critics as anti-clamtic. I watched the last half-hour of Apoclypse Now Redux on HBO Saturday night. Just to see it again,the surreal color images leaping back at you,brought back memories when I first saw it.
Apolypse Now had been reeditied and the redux version of the ending,the fires and explosions are taken out. There in the theatrical version. But redux which I have on dvd is interesting too watch. Coppla wanted to make the journey more surreal. Like the use of the French plantation for example. But still it’s true journey into the heart of darkness.
That’s true I’ve learned are recession proof. But what about cinemas? Case in point last weekend ever cinema opened with Hannah Montana the movie. All 5 cinema chains in Jackson have it and it didn’t open in Vicksburg at all. I see this as a slight against Monatana fans. Wilcox Theatres is struggling. None of the Cinema operators here never learned the lessons of the past. But not to open with a major Disney family film like Hannah is a slap in the face.
I looked up the definition cinerama in wikipedia. The cinerama process paved the way for move improved film like panavision 70mm film for example. If I’m wrong correct me but it also listed the cinerama cinemas and the three projections process which entailed cinerama. But it u look up in wikipedia it does mention various mm of film that proceeded this process.
When it comes to film choices,Vicksburg with its one cinema is limited. Not all the films which open in New York and Los Angeles don’t even open here. For instance I don’t expect Slumdog Millionaire to come here at due to the high demand. Before Wilcox open thier theatres,the larger chains gave this town hard time becouse of its size and I suspect business leaders were clearly disappointed. While town went for without a cinema I had an oppertunity to experince the cinemas in Flowood,Madison,Ridgeland and Pearl. These are the growing communitiies in central mississippi I might add. And the narrow minded business locals had a hard time dealing with the change of marketplace.
I believe that Wilcox Theatres is in competition with these central miss cinemas. Now with an economic downturn some of my friends are questioning how long Wilcox is going to last.
I like the stadium cinemas in Houston,Texas. I can’t recall the chain but I first went to one in Houston. Now that my realtives live in Tyler I’ve been to some of thier stadium cinemas and they’re cool. I’ve always wanted to go in an AMC cinema. When I was in Maryland I went to a multiplex there I want to say it was Odeon but it has been a long tome.
When u live in a town like Vicksburg Ms which has had a series of cinemas from Regel Entertaintment Group which stayed for a long time before it traded it cinema to first now closed Village Theatres; and now to a startup called Wilcox Theatres. I can tell you Wilcox is trying to get the first releases.

When the feud broke out between now bankrupt Village Theatres and CBL Associates who owned the mall rental space and they charge high rent I might add. The local paper didn’t do the readers a courtesy of doing a story on why the cinema closed. I did most of my leg work on my own with the inciddent happen in Dec of ‘06. The Post didn’t do a follow up story nor did they ask CBL about thier rental issues or how much. Village didn’t care the rental property nor updated the projectors like new cinema startup has done.
Wilcox Theartes which now rents the space has brought in their own security force,upgraded the projectors and sound. When the new owner took cver he completely renovated all four screens. But the kids here would like to see a box cinema here from what one of my friends told me. Myself and others we’re wondering how long is Wilcox is going to stay in the old mall property.
