ceasar commented about B & B Theatres Vicksburg Mall 6 on Sep 13, 2015 at 10:50 am

A few days on Sept 11 Wilcox Cinema 6 closed in Vicksburg Mall. In the post the owner decline to mention why he had to close the cinema here in Vicksburg Ms. Yet the Mall Operation says another Cinema is coming but he couldn’t say when. I rated Wilcox when it was open average but it had one problem. It would hold over movies for long peirods time. Before it close The Man From UNCLE,THe Gallows were held over the past sevral months. Antman,Fantastic 4,Mission Impossible Rogue Syndica didn’t open. The Cinemas Facebook page hasn’t been updated on its closing. But a few comments on locals are there. So for the River City is without a cinema again.

Now Wilcox Theatres here in Vicksburg mas has been behind the curb when it comes to 3d tech. Either they can’t afford the lens for thier digital conversation or they want it. But they don’t get the big cinema hits which are in 3d. As a result the small operator loses his his market to the larger markets like those in Jackson metro area where Cinemas like the Malco17 in Madison have 3d tech to show 3d movies. Like Disney’s fourth Toy Story didn’t open here at all in Vicksburg but since this small operator doesn’t have the 3d tech I believe effects the bottom line.

So far the the local cinema here in vicksburg ms hasn’t taken intitiative to aquire a lens which could fit over the digital projectors. Thus far this cinema has missed out on the big hits of the summer including Toy Story 3D. Already Wilcox has lost its share of teen and parent audiences to the jackson marketplace which has the Real 3d tech. Plus not all the animation isn’t realease in 2d which creates a problem as well.

Toy Story 3d didn’t open at Wilcox theaters here becouse they lack the 3d technology to support such films. What I have learn independent cinema operators struggling to compete with the chains. I can tell you on Saturday afternoon Wilcox can’t fill in the seats. I figure u don’t have 3d film like Toystory nor Alice in Wonderland the audience will not come that simple.

so far the local cinema owner here in Vicksburg ms has taken the intitiative to get ahold of this new technology.

with more studios relasing films in 3d those cinemas that lack 3d tech to show them are already left out of the picture. Now Wilcox Theaters who opened a few years ago in the old Pemberton Mall doesn’t have the 3d tech to show such films. I figure sooner or later independent operators whod can’t afford this tech are going to lose thier audience to larger chains like AMC,Cinemark, and others. This I believe will cause smaller market cinemas to close. Anyone agree or disagree?

U want to know something the local cinema had the poster for Alice but it didn’t open with it all. Even 2d the operator didn’t bring it this market at all. Wilcox Theaters has a predjuice toward tim burton films I learned from one the teens at blockbuster.

ceasar commented about Small cinemas buck the multiplex trend in offshore places in SW Florida on Apr 27, 2010 at 7:46 am

This may be good in some markets but not all.
Since Wilcox Theaters opened here in Vicksburg it hasn’t kept with larger chains. For one thing it doesn’t have 3d digtal projection which is the rage right now. At both cinemas not just the one here but in Bastrop there is a tendancy to hold movies over for long months at a time. Which blocks future films from opening. Since the shutdown from several years ago the first time it hasn’t stopped the locals here to go the cinemas in the metro jackson area. Also when posters are advertised for movies like Precisous they never opened. And blockbusters like Alice in Womderland haven’t opened at all. Now is this a way to treat smart audeinces? No.
Also when it came to the movie Repoman it was never delivered to the cinema where on their website it was advertised. But 3d tech could spell doome for small operators too. Think about it.

When it comes to 3d technology Wilcox theatres a small operator can’t compete. Most of the 3d projector tech is found in the Jackson Metro area. Not in a small opertor like Wilcox who can’t comepete against the chains and which robs locals of the 3d experince.

when it comes to the 3d technolgy Vicksburg Wilcox theatres is left out in the cold. The locals have to go to Metro jackson to experince 3d films. By the Alice in Wonderland didn’t open here nor the dragon 3d didn’t open at all. I have a feeling 3d tech is going to shut out some cinema operators before its over with.

Another way a small town cinema can close is this. In the letter to the editors of the local paper complaints emerge about rudeness of kids and cellphones going off. But small town struggling operators like Wilcox I now suspect are losing thier audience. Several Walt Disney films didn’t open at the latter part of year. Also holding movies over for several months at a time can hurt your bottom line. By the mantinee ticket price is now 5.00. But what’s the point in going when a film is held over too long? Now Alice in Wonderland didn’t open at all at the Wilcox. Also it doesn’t have the digital project tech to support 3d.

Wilcox Theatres which took over the mall cinema here has done same thing. In fact they have held movies for over a month or more and the locals have caught on. Last weekend for example Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland opened all the metro cinemas in the Jackson area but not the local one here. When Regal UA owned the mall cinema for exampe they were able to open with a tim burton film with no problem. This isn’t the only time that this has happened with Disney films. Hannah Montana the movie didn’t open on the opening weekend and the Princess and the Frog. This sort of behavior only forces those here to go see the films in the metro market place.

ceasar commented about Will "Avatar" be to 3D what "The Jazz Singer" was to sound? on Mar 2, 2010 at 6:40 am

Already several films coming out this month are going to be 3d which leaves some small theatre startups like Wilcox Theatres which has digital projectors but not 3d technology. This means some of the locals will journey to Malco Cinemas in Madison to experince the 3d experince. Question why are some cinema operators afraid to embrace new technology like 3d? Now Avatar when it was released here didn’t come in 3d which shows how far behind some cinemas are.

ceasar commented about Box office up, dvd sales down in 2009 on Jan 26, 2010 at 6:51 am

Maybe someone in the cinema business could provide some information. I discovered the small Cinema Wilcox Theatres has been holding over movies two to three months at a time. A pattern I recently spotted. It’s not just one movie but a block of films. On an opening weekend new movies haven’t open. Like the box office hits Book of Eli and Paranormal Activity which the nearly a hundred people demanded to come never happen. But is holding films over a good business practice or a bad one? I told one of thier associates thier losing mony becouse I learn the market is still going to the Jackson Metro area for more choices.

ceasar
ceasar commented about Will movies at home kill movie theaters? on Jan 5, 2010 at 7:27 am

Perhaps.
One thing one pattern that I have uncovered with the local cinema opertator is that they hold movies as long as two months. Now Wilcox is following after Village Entertainment and Regal with this business practice. Question is this unsavory? Well if u hold over over a movie longer than two months it blocks other films from coming here at all. Example Paranormal Activity didn’t open at the local cinema and on the Demand It site a lot of locals close to a hundred demanded that this movie open here. But it didn’t. Yet to hold over films longer than month is going to push the audience into other markets.

What has been interesting with Wilcox Theatres, a startup, which opened back in November of 07 they have a website too. But I still the see the common mistakes they make. Like at advertising the poster of Inglorious Bastard and it doesn’t open on the opening weekend for example. Same applys to the flop Jennifer’s Body that didn’t happen either. One thing I have learned is the fact that the Jackson Metro market has its teeth deep in this market. Teens are going to to Clinton UA Cinema to see what they want to see; like Wilcox is making the mistake of holding Halloween2 for a long peirod time and usually they get a film which was release on opening weekend a week or two weeks later. But one interesting comment the teens have made the statement that they would love to see a stand slone cinema from the mall.
But my friends are questioning how long Wilcox is going to last.

ceasar commented about "Apocalypse Now" 30th Anniversary on Aug 17, 2009 at 6:40 am

Apoclyspe Now was my first R-rated film. To this day I love watching the choppers swoop in to the Wagner’s Valkryie. At the time the ending perturbed critics as anti-clamtic. I watched the last half-hour of Apoclypse Now Redux on HBO Saturday night. Just to see it again, the surreal color images leaping back at you, brought back memories when I first saw it.
Apolypse Now had been reeditied and the redux version of the ending, the fires and explosions are taken out. There in the theatrical version. But redux which I have on dvd is interesting too watch. Coppla wanted to make the journey more surreal. Like the use of the French plantation for example. But still it’s true journey into the heart of darkness.

That’s true I’ve learned are recession proof. But what about cinemas? Case in point last weekend ever cinema opened with Hannah Montana the movie. All 5 cinema chains in Jackson have it and it didn’t open in Vicksburg at all. I see this as a slight against Monatana fans. Wilcox Theatres is struggling. None of the Cinema operators here never learned the lessons of the past. But not to open with a major Disney family film like Hannah is a slap in the face.

I looked up the definition cinerama in wikipedia. The cinerama process paved the way for move improved film like panavision 70mm film for example. If I’m wrong correct me but it also listed the cinerama cinemas and the three projections process which entailed cinerama. But it u look up in wikipedia it does mention various mm of film that proceeded this process.

ceasar commented about Christopher Campbell discusses chain loyalty on Mar 16, 2009 at 6:28 am

When it comes to film choices,Vicksburg with its one cinema is limited. Not all the films which open in New York and Los Angeles don’t even open here. For instance I don’t expect Slumdog Millionaire to come here at due to the high demand. Before Wilcox open thier theatres, the larger chains gave this town hard time becouse of its size and I suspect business leaders were clearly disappointed. While town went for without a cinema I had an oppertunity to experince the cinemas in Flowood,Madison,Ridgeland and Pearl. These are the growing communitiies in central mississippi I might add. And the narrow minded business locals had a hard time dealing with the change of marketplace.
I believe that Wilcox Theatres is in competition with these central miss cinemas. Now with an economic downturn some of my friends are questioning how long Wilcox is going to last.

I like the stadium cinemas in Houston,Texas. I can’t recall the chain but I first went to one in Houston. Now that my realtives live in Tyler I’ve been to some of thier stadium cinemas and they’re cool. I’ve always wanted to go in an AMC cinema. When I was in Maryland I went to a multiplex there I want to say it was Odeon but it has been a long tome.

When u live in a town like Vicksburg Ms which has had a series of cinemas from Regel Entertaintment Group which stayed for a long time before it traded it cinema to first now closed Village Theatres; and now to a startup called Wilcox Theatres. I can tell you Wilcox is trying to get the first releases.
When the cinema closed here over three years ago,I went back to Regel Entertainment Group where I atttended thier cinemas in Clinton,Northpark but honestly I didn’t stay with one cinema brand.
Here are the cinemas chains I’ve attended:
Cinemark TineslTown Stadium cinemas
Malco17 in Madison,Maloc is out of Memphis,tn.
Regel Cinamas too.
And Rave Cinemas,Destin,Florida
I’m not tied to one brand cinema.I’ll go where that movie is playing.

well I was speculating. Becouse with today’s technology u can improve a film print. A few years ago I remember when the American Movie Classics channel would hold funraisers to save films from destruction.

This story sounds similar to what happen here in Vicksburg,Ms with its local paper. When the feud broke out between now bankrupt Village Theatres and CBL Associates who owned the mall rental space and they charge high rent I might add. The local paper didn’t do the readers a courtesy of doing a story on why the cinema closed. I did most of my leg work on my own with the inciddent happen in Dec of ‘06. The Post didn’t do a follow up story nor did they ask CBL about thier rental issues or how much. Village didn’t care the rental property nor updated the projectors like new cinema startup has done.
Wilcox Theartes which now rents the space has brought in their own security force, upgraded the projectors and sound. When the new owner took cver he completely renovated all four screens. But the kids here would like to see a box cinema here from what one of my friends told me. Myself and others we’re wondering how long is Wilcox is going to stay in the old mall property.
