This theater is very interesting. It is very very small. The tile work is very amazing. But, if you want to see a new movie you will be out of luck. This theater only shows independent and small release films. Movies come here before they get released to “ Straight to DVD ” They also play special editions an director cut films here. Sometimes it is even closed for private screenings. I myself have only been here a few times * count on one hand * But I know if you like running into famous people this is the theater in Atlanta to goto.
It was built in the mid 90’s and the grand opening was for Jurassic Park. I don’t know if it is still there but for many many years the lobby and the hallway exit into the mall had Dino’s painted on the walls. The theater was Jurassic themed an remained however it has been well over a decade since I have been to this place.
It is an empty parking lot now where the grass has taken over the pavement. All that remains of this place is the Sign near the road. It sits among a few bus stops. This was a nice theater because it was out of date but updated. No matter how big of a movie you could go there on a opening weekend and they would have plenty of tickets. They also a very good variety of candy like no other theater. The best part to this place however was the Star Wars Arcade game. It was only 25 cents to play and I imagine that I kept that place in business playing it. I hated to see it go. One day I drove past it and it was boarded up. I wrote the company a letter saying I hated to see it go an they replied very quickly stating that Georgia theater company made the decision to shut it down because of budget. Atlanta is a growing area and Gwinnett Place is making a come back. This would have made a perfect spot for a special showing theater. However to late for that. As many of you know sitting across the parking lot is Cinema 6…a very small theater that was shut down before this place. The only other theater in the area is a Dollar Theater Ventura Cinema 12…then off Pleasant Hill road which is a big “ To do ” strip about 5 or 6 miles down after all businesses have ended an way past the mall is a Regal Cinema. Thats it for this very populated strip.
This was my favorite movie theater as a child. It opened in the mid 80’s and closed in the mid 90’s and sat boarded up up until 2005 and it was demolished and a Northern Tool now sits in it’s place. It sat on a hill about 20 miles out of Atlanta in Snellville on Atlanta highway 78. Level with the road was a tire place balled Bulldog tire and on the same sign as the movie listings a GA Bulldog was painted under it. Because the tire place was a Shoney’s Buffet and a restaurant that was many different things through out the years. Then on the hill shining above everything was the Theater. Just to the left of all of these was a HESS gas station that was always beyond bright at night. The front of the theater had a row of posters to the left and at the end of the posters was a small one person ticket window. Inside the double door to the left was the concession stand connected to the box office. It had two lined and one popcorn window in the middle of the counter. To the right when you walked in was a small Arcade. Then a small lobby and the bathrooms were hidden on the right. Then the five doors to the theaters. Above the doors were scrolling red letter signs sayings movies an times of each theater. If I recall the main colors of the theater were purple and royal blue. But my memory says green as well. The outside of the building were different shades of brown. I have searched for years for any kind of pictures of the place but I can not find any. The city has a photo collection of the city through out the years in the art commission but it’s very hard to get the art commission to do anything none the less let you look at their pictures.
Been open since the early 90’s….flat seating and updated in late 90’s to Stadium. I worked there for about a year when I was 16 and like most people who worked there grew tired of the manager named Miss B. It was very popular in the mid 90’s. The ticket line would be wrapped around the building. Nowadays on a Saturday night you can drive by an count the cars in the parking lot. When the Regal IMAX at Mall of GA opened it began it’s slow decline. It sits in the heart of the city in an Abandon Wal-Mart shopping center. In the peak days of this theater there was a Wal-Mart presuper center era and in the strip was a Dollar Store, Radio Shack, Comic Book Store, Tanning Bed, Nail Salon, Hair Salon, All you can eat Chinese Buffet, A family owned Italian Restaurant, A Waffle House, A Dunkin Donuts, and a Cafe called Main Street Cafe and at times when the fair would come to town it was use the same parking lot. But, Business moved to the other major street in the city. Wal-Mart shut down and soon after the businesses in the strip. Wal-mart Supercenter opened up and a Target and with the Target came a Carmike Cinema and the two theaters were forced to share opening movies. So it was a 50/50 on what movies were playing at what theater because they where so close to one another. For years now Regal has sat alone and from insider knowledge I hear Regal renewed the lease until 2018. However, Carmike is building a IMAX Dinner theater just across down….State of the art…..and they are leaving the old one open for smaller shows and special screenings. So Regal doesn’t stand a chance. The inside was never really updated other then a paint job and it was terrible colors for a theater. Anyone who ever worked there knew the story of the Ghost and the mean old hateful manager named Miss B aka Becky. She was a bitter old woman who smoked about 3 or 4 packs a day and no matter what you did you could not impress her. She was the kind of manager who would open a package from UPS of promo buttons for a big movie and throw them away saying its a waste of time. A man named Billy was the main manager for years but he saw the iceberg ahead and bailed. Within another 2 to 3 years this will be an empty building and then the city will have a reason to demolish the lot because it is all that stands other then a little junky thrift store. It has a beautiful boarder around the lobby I will try to get there an take photos of it.
