I understand the screen at The Dominion back then at 48ft width was small by comparison to the other West End Cinemas such as The Astoria, Metropole and Empire, let alone The Odeon Marble Arch….
i looked on the Odeon booking site and next week Mary Poppins continues at the OLS?
I am surprised they are closing so soon when Mary Poppins is attracting nearly full houses having just attended a matinee recently.Mary Poppins is doing huge business Uk wide and Stan and Ollie IMO will not fall into that catagory.
oh dear One wonders if it will be open in time for Friday?
is the Odeon opening before Christmas?
Any closer to an opening date? Mary Poppins returns would make a good candidate for the opening feature
Empire strikes back pro rata opening week record
I agree There seems to be no one anywhere who has any photos of the interior of this huge cinema from its heyday in the 60s! loved to have seen a picture of its 70mm screen etc
Ken do you have measurements or images for the Old 70mm cinemas of The Astoria or Metropole?
Howard that would be fascinating to step back and compare the original Cinerama sized screens to the more modern screens in the West End. From memory both The Astoria Cinerama in Charing Cross, Metropole in Victoria and The Coliseum in St Martin’s Lane had huge screens in the sixties.Does anyone have any stats or photos?
I am going to Brief Encounter in April so things must be moving forward!
a staff member at the OLS advised the cinema will bet closing after the run of The Last Jedi. So assume the renovation will commence thereafter
The Restoration was made in the 60s and was put on in its new 70mm presentation at the Empire Leicester Square and broke box office records at that cinema in 1968 after Dr Zhivago finished its successful 70mm run.
fascinating stuff what is your site name exactly Fanatical?
probably in the new year after Star Wars?
has anyone any photos showing the Empire in the mid sixties especially the foyer and the Empire screen as it was then?
I thought the Odeon is shortly closing for major works?
when is the work likely to start?
hopefully….. I still have my reservations on the future of this theatre.
Make it a showcase single screen again as there are no other single screen left now. Use it for premieres like the old days. Realistically and seriously I think Empire will sell this off one way or the other
or close it and sell the cinema to greedy property developers
end of an era. How long till it gets pulled down and rebuilt as The Everyman?
maybe this historic cinema may be closed soon and converted to yet more flats?
agreed Zappomatic. And we have the Curzon Chelsea closing soon for yet more flats etc The greedy property developers are out of control
