The O'Klare started as a silent cinema, sat out the first years of talkies as a converted garage and new car showroom from 1926 to 1934 but transitioned back film – now with sound – in 1935 finally closing as the Uptown Theatre shuttering March 1, 1952 with the films, “Kentucky” and “The Girl on the Bridge” as television began to impact the theatrical business. The Republican party decided to use the facility for its 1952 campaign activities including speeches and, finally, election night return telecasts (middle ad). And the building transitioned to non-profit church services with the Evangel Temple (ad at right) for less than a year and then ironically was a showroom where you could see DuMont televisions (at at bottom left) and could get frozen treats (at at bottom right) and finally an electrical services contractor.
