I grew up in Manhattan Beach in the late 50’s and early 60’s. It was on Manhattan Beach Boulevard on a very steep hill (near Highland Avenue). I must have seen so many great movies there – from Bambi to The Bridge on the River Kwai. I miss the old theater.
I lived in Manhattan Beach in the late 1950’s and we often went to the Roadium Drive-In. Nothing really special. Just a big lot with speakers and a big screen. Not really too much fun in the family stationwagon. I preferred going to the GRAND theaters downtown Los Angeles. They were all so magnificent.
When I was growing up in Los Angeles in the 50’s (I was born in Los Angeles in 1947), I went to the Million Dollar Theater almost every week with my grandmother. We would go to dinner on Saturday night at the Biltmore or Statler Hilton, then walk over to the Million Dollar Theater on Broadway. What do I remember the most? The ENORMOUS rest rooms with Gold (colored) fixtures. Magnificent carpets. Wide stairways. And, LODGE seats. My grandmother loved the HORROR movies that were popular in the 50’s. Also near (downtown): the Bradbury Building, Grand Central Market and so many other GREAT and magnificent theaters RKO, Paramount, etc., etc., etc.
My grandparents, my parents and I all frequented the Temple Theatre on Vermont (near Slauson). My mother’s parents moved into the neighborhood (60th Street) in the early 20’s. My mother went there through her childhood. I went there with my grandparents in the 50’s. I believe that there was an Chinese restaurant at the left side of the theater entrance. I THINK I saw “Bambi” there. I remember playing KENO during the intermissions. The last time I was in the neighborhood (maybe 20 years ago), there was a wig shop in the front of the building. Does anyone know whether the building has been torn down?
