The only movie I remember seeing with my mother was Ten Commandments (1956 – I was 10) at the luxurious Martini Theater. I remember that they had a vending machine for soft drinks with a cup and ice. It was 10 cents.
I grew up in La Marque and my dad had a used car business just a few blocks from the Lamar Theater. The memories I have of the Lamar was the price (9 cents for kids and 25 cents for adults). I remember seeing the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis comedies (Scared Stiff comes to mind) there as well as Abbott and Costello. They also ran serials there on Saturday morning. Stuff like “Superman”.
Another thing is that they has an upstairs balcony for “colored”
customers.
That is so sad to lose an icon which brought so much pleasure to so many. Seems like someone would convert it and put it to use!
What fond memories!
