Victory Theatre
An overlooked highlight in the history of Blackheath’s cinema is the Vice Regal Australian Premiere of Univeral’s 1926 silent feature “The Cohens and Kellys” held there on the evening of Saturday 25th May 1929. The N.S.W. Governor Admiral Sir Dudley de Chair, along with his wife and daughter, spent the weekend in town with the main purpose of dedicating the War Memorial Archway that afternoon. (Oddly, the first of several sequels to this comedy film had already been screened in Sydney the year before. Release of the original had been delayed by a legal dispute over claimed copyright infringement).
