The plaque was placed on the Rockingham Waterfront Pioneer Rotary Walk in Rockingham on the 20 April 2014 – The author is Zigzig20s – It reads ….</p> <p>During the 1940’s-60’s Syd Hart started a theatre at the Jazz Hall next to the Rockingham Hotel. When Jack Bidstrup took over he called it The New Century. He also operated The Melody Theatre in a hall at Safety Bay. The hall was purchased by Dave Sparkes from the Mandogalup settlement.   • <p>Announcing the opening of your new drive-in. At left, it’s November 16, 1947 and time for the Star Drive-In to launch with “The Egg and I.” Unfortunately, announcing the closing of your newish drive-in. At right, it appears to be the last ever showing — a 50 cent carload special — of “The Big Knife” and “Unchained” on July 13, 1956. No further advertisements or bookings are apparent.</p>
  • <p>Abilene’s first drive-in, the Skyline Drive-In launched April 1, 1947 with John Wayne’s “Tall in the Saddle” (at at left). It had just one community speaker for the drive-in. The original owners were two armed service veterans who operated the theatre for one season before selling it to George and Ruth N. Likins of the Windsor Hotel going with individual, Chandler’s two-way communication drive-in speakers/intercoms and in-car electric heaters for year-round operation (second ad in 1948). Ruth Linkins received an offer of $225,000 for the property and on Valentine’s Day 1965 (ads #3 & 4) as they counted down the final days showing “Yellowstone Kelly” and “Wind Across the Everglades.”</p>
