Talkies come to The Rink Theatre

The “going to the pictures” on a Saturday night was a big part of Pingelly’s social scene. The Rink Theatre in Queen Street had a seating capacity of 400. The original cinematograph machines did not have sound and the music score was played on an organ within the theatre. I had a conversation with Harry Harding and he told me how he converted the cinematograph machines to be capable of reproducing the sound strip on the motion pictures. The Rink Theatre continued to operate until the Pingelly Drive-in Cinema was built. The Rink Theatre was demolished soon after – Contributed by Greg Lynch –

A NEW PICTURE GARDEN FOR VICTORIA PARK

An innovation at Victoria Park is the opening of picture gardens at the rear of the Amusu Theatre in Albany-road. The seating accommodation in this fresh-air theatre comprises of hundreds of deck chairs and garden seats set out on lawns. A modern talkie plant has been especially adapted for open-air performances. The Amusu building it-self has been converted into a semi—open—air cafe, where patrons of the theatre may dance to relayed music after the show. In the event of wet weather the picture program will be shown in the Broadway Theatre - Contributed by Greg Lynch -

A NEW CINEMA FOR VICTORIA PARK

Residents in the Victoria Park area will be glad to know that in the course of the next three months they will have a large and up-to-date picture palace in their suburb. The Amusu Theatre now in course of erection, is the most central part of this large area, and will undoubtedly prove a boon to all lovers of the movies, especially those who prefer to have their amusement where comfort and pleasant surroundings are the keynotes.

A special system of ventilation

A special system of ventilation, for use during the hot evenings of the summer is being installed. This scheme, which the proprietors claim will make the theatre as cool as an open air show, consists of large sliding doorways forming part of the side walls. This with a perfectly ventilated roof, the best of pictures and good music should make this theatre as one of the most popular in the metropolitan area,

The proprietors Messers. Geo, Hall and J.R.Johnstone of Victoria Park expect that the theatre will be ready for use early in October. Architectural arrangements are in the hands of Messrs. Oldham, Boas, Perth, with Mr. T. Clare, Victoria Park, as the contractor – Contributed by Greg Lynch –

THE HISTORY*

The proposed Albany Theatre was part of THE HOWEY ESTATE BUILDING PROGRAM and was built into the basement of Albany Court, located in 230 Collins Street, Melbourne, Victoria The ground floor of the building had been designed as a shopping arcade extending from Collins street through to Howey place. There are seven shops in the arcade, and two in Collins street. A bright and attractive appearance has been given to the show windows by the use of stainless steel moldings.

The Albany Theatre*

The basement of the building will be occupied by the Albany Theatre and a modern coffee lounge, both under the same control. Air conditioning to be provided in both the lounge and the theatre. The decoration follows the modern horizontal treatment. The special furniture in the lounge and theatre has been designed by the theatre architects Messrs Taylor, Soillieux and Overend. The operating bio box is situated at the Collins street end and has natural light from pavement lights above. The seating Capacity at the time of building was 268.

The projection equipment has been installed by Harringtons Limited. The sound is the Australian made Racophone. A central heating ventilating and air conditioning system has been carried right throughout the building. A system of 12 vertical utility ducts runs from the basement to the roof, each duct carrying the hot and cold water mains the radiation, and gas services. All the equipment operating these services is a sub-basement, and with the general and sanitary plumbing formed part of the contract of Messrs Thomas Warner and Sons, of South Melbourne.

The Heating*

The boiler operating the hot-water and heating service is fired by a fully automatically controlled fuel oil burner which was installed by Major Furnace and Combustion Engineers Pty Ltd of South Yarra.

The Grand opening*

Karamoja was a 1954 film produced by exploitation filmmaker Kroger Babb. A documentary film of a native tribe from Uganda, the film was marketed by Babb to focus on the imagery that would be shocking to an American audience, including advertising which claimed that the tribe wore only the wind and live on blood and beer. Scenes in the film included the bleeding of cattle and drinking of the warm blood, and self-mutilation as a form of ornamentation, as well as a full-color circumcision scene. Karamoja proved to be less controversial than many of Babb’s other films. Never-the-less it grossed well at The Albany & The Times as a joint promotion in 1954 – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
