1931… The Grand Theater, Wausau, Wisconsin. Uniformed ushers would welcome movie goers and escort them to their seats. It was common to see ushers with their flash lights showing late comers to their seats after the movie had started. Going to the movies was a dress up event. There were signs that read “Ladies please remove your hats”. Newsreels and a cartoon always preceded the feature movie and there was always an intermission to give the projectionist time to change reels. By the 60’s the era had past.
Pictured here with other usher corps members is 16 year old Bob Geisel who I worked for in the mid 60’s and became life long friends. In 2000 together we published a book “Forever in Focus” that documents the Wausau area from 1940 to 2000. This photo is included in the book.
